PS3/Xbox 360 Comprise 80% Of HD Players

A couple things came to light today, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal and the Post-Gazette in regards to the HD format war. First off, it appears that movie studios are going in different directions: for example, if you want to purchase a Universal HD movie, you must go for HD-DVD. On the other hand, if you want a Disney HD movie, you'll have to go the Blu-Ray route. We'll have to wait and see if other studios and publishers go exclusive with either side…

But the second tidbit of news is even more intriguing. A recent report says that 695,000 U.S. consumers own either a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player; 400,000 (58%) have Blu-Ray simply because they own a PS3, and 150,000 (22%) own HD-DVD players, primarily because they purchased the HD-DVD upgrade kit for the Xbox 360. What does this mean? Well, it means the PS3 and Xbox 360 account for 80% of all the HD players currently on the market.

And let the games begin!
