They're still not giving us an official name – guess we'll just assume it's "Arc" for now – but at least we've got a narrowed-down time frame.

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced today that their new motion controller for the PlayStation 3 will hit the market this fall in Japan, Asia, Europe/PAL territories and North America. As most of you know, it will be paired with the already existing PlayStation Eye and "detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement within the game, delivering a whole new entertainment experience on PS3." The previous estimate was that it might be ready in the spring or summer but it appears Sony wants to wait until they've got a goodly amount of compatible software ready. Said SCE President and Group CEO, Kazuo Hirai:

"We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users. We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expands and defines the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home."

The press release adds that Sony plans to "vigorously promote" this new motion-sensing technology as the "de facto controller of the PS3 platform along with the DualShock series controller." They also remind us that "motion controller" is a tentative name (duh) and that if you wish to experience the innovation of this nifty new technology, you really will need the PlayStation Eye. Well, fall seems to be about the right time, don't you think?  Good for the holidays, no?

Sorry didn't mean to say that the Arc would be bundled with the GT5 PS3 bundle. What I meant was that the Arc and the GT5 PS3 bundle would probably be released around the same time for the holidays. I don't think Arc would be appropriate for GT5.

Arc in the dark.

they've learned from releasing the PS3 without any AAA titles I see. Good. I guess u could include Resistance: Fall Of Man there, but o well. They've learned. I'll be sure to get Arc.

My wife is ever so close to wanting a 3rd PS3 in the house (mine in the living room, kids in the game room).

This could do it, and I am really crossing my fingers over it!

In my experience (been married for 17 years) its best to get the green light on all things video games when it comes to your significant other.

The PS3 Motion Controller is what most people think the Wii is going to be.

Just hope it comes out with the right games.

How exactly is it supposed to work together with the eye…meaning, would I have to put that bulky little box on top of my tv?

Bulky? The thing is smaller than a fist.

Still, when you have a white wall with a slim tv, it would seem to me that it would really stand out somewhat awkwardly.

We have the wii, and the bonus is that the detection bar fits and blends perfectly ontop of the tv, you don't even notice it.

Put it under your tv?
I have my Wii's sensor bar under my tv so its almost perfectly hidden. Its actually right on top of my center channel speaker, you can hardly tell its there. The eye can't hide quite as well, but i'd plan on putting it under my tv somewhere.

Well, you could always attach it to the wall or build a retractable harness so that it comes down from the ceiling and back into the ceiling. Just a thought.

They can take all the time they want. I have no problem with waiting for this because I will be getting it. Oh, yeah.

I'll need to buy a Playstation Eye soon, one problem is the fact that the motion controller could be in a bundle with the eye.

fluffer nutter

I'd wait and see if they may have a bundle. Plus, if you were planning on getting EyePet, it comes bundled with the Eye and that would make it only 19.99 vs. 34.99 for the stand alone option.

Or check out Toys R Us, they were selling the Eye of Judgment game, & came bundled with the PSEye, for $19.99

I wonder if it's being delayed because of MS. Could it be that the "comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller" are games that are also being developed for Natal and the third party developers want to release the same games at the same time for both platforms?

johnld
johnld

there arent really any game for natal that i wanted let alone they almost finished. I mean milo, the hells the point of that? My coworker said hell probably want to get it though. Only to see how much he can mess with it. A sale is still a sale.

I don't have the PSEye, and won't be motioning anyway, but why not just bundle it with the controller? And come up with a name already.

I think i read somewhere once that they plan on making the Eye able to use anything, not just the glowy-wand thing. Is this correct? If Sony wants Arc to compete with Natal they are going to have to lose the wand and let Arc track anything.

johnld
johnld

umm..the arc is the wand. i think you mean upgrade the pseye to do anything.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Be interesting to aim two tvs with respective cameras at yourself, see how well Arc tracks your wands and how well Natal tracks your hands. How quickly, effects of hands being closer, farther (as in the bow and arrow demo) etc.

I'll buy this if the price is right and it comes out with good software to back it up as well as a good bundle. Otherwise there's too many "normal" games to play.

LimitedVertigo

I will NEVER buy this. If I want to replicate my actions on my own I'll go play basketball outside. I play videogames so I can sit back, relax, and escape within a story.

Since the PS3 is reckoned to be the more mature gamer's choice (well maybe not mature, but older) I can't see this thing being too popular.
