By now, it's easy to say the first quarter of 2010 is crowded with high-profile releases and ironically enough, many of those games fled out of 2009 to avoid the stiff holiday competition.

But Quantic Dream still believes it's a bad idea "to release a new IP or a new genre just before Christmas" and on top of which, if a game is good enough, it'll probably sell well. We've been saying this for quite a long time, but it's good to hear a developer echo those words of wisdom. During a recent PlayStation LifeStyle interview , Quantic Dream CEO and Heavy Rain director David Cage said it's basically "up to them" to deliver a singular experience that consumers will pay for. Said Cage:

"But, yeah, you know, if the game is good I think it’s going to sell anyway, so it’s up to us, and we are in this type of strange situation where we try to create our own genre, so we can’t say we really have competition as such, in the same category of game, so we believe it is an interesting position."

We've bought into this "new genre" type of thinking before, previously postulating that Heavy Rain might be the start of an intellectual genre due to its unique cinematic/interactive style of storytelling. And if there's one thing we've proven in this industry it's that quality titles do sell particularly well. Lastly, even if the game arrives around the time of God of War III , Gran Turismo 5 or even Final Fantasy XIII , Cage is right in thinking that Heavy Rain really wouldn't be in direct competition with any of these titles. We are indeed hoping for this game to be successful!

Been hearing about this one for so long, really interested to see how it turns out. Over hyped, or will it deliver the goods.

Probably won't see a demo for this one, since it is more of a story reliant game. A demo would only be good to get a feel of the mechanics of the game I think.

Every thing I have heard and seen about Heavy Rain has really wet my appetite. Pun intented I suppose.

wait, so hes saying if the game is good, it will sell no matter when its released.
so does not that make his "heavy rain needs its space" excuse moot?
developers strike again.

Guys, I don't know; this Cage fella keeps coming out with comments. Seems to me he may be a little bit worried at how Heavy Rain will actually go down. It may go down a storm (no pun intended), who knows… but, it could also be a washout (no pun intended) if the game mechanics don't stick…

…remember, carry an umbrella with you at all times… it could be raining…

I'm keeping my eye on this game, I just want to see how many different endings does the story have. Each scene probably have 3-4 outcome. Each of those scenes branches out to another 3-4 possibilities. If the game lasts about 10 hours, I just don't know how many combinations there will be. Although I won't jump in on the purchase until more information is provided.

i recently watched an exclusive interview from the japan ps store and the graphics are on par with uncharted2, the gameplay looked extremely innovative using the sixaxis to do things like turn a water faucet on, etc. this is going to be yet another ps3 exclusive that will have the X Bots throwing up in their master chief helmets. sorry about the capitalization errors my right hands n a splint/cast thing and im typing with my ps3 controller.

If Heavy Rain gets some TV screen time, public posters or an effective radio ad publicising its many story branches, unique adult story and incredible graphics (basically, advertise it as a "play your own movie where you control the action kinda thing) then hopefully we will see some brewing interest in this game.

I've already got my money on this. No doubt thousands of Sony fans are drooling over this title right now. And 360 fans and Xbots are reading about it and praying that a 360 version or copy cat game will come out that they can attempt to throw in our faces. (HA!!! Heavy Rain is only 8/9/10 hours long, but (360 title) is 12 HOURS LONG!!! AND it offers 3 more endings then Heavy Rain!!!!)

Can anyone honestly care about a Heavy Rain copy-cat game made for 360 to combat the original??? I guess this is the wrong place to ask. Even then, it'll be another 2-3 years before it sees the light of day and 360 will be considered too old to compete. (Lets face it, a 360 clone of Heavy Rain will never fit on a single 360 DVD, it's old tech and developers are starting to see this. Blu-ray did pay off, Sony were right again.)

You know what could help games sell more, mainstream exposure. Granted that sony has been stepping up their game in this department lately, my advice is to actually do some of the advertising themselves. If valkyria chronicles got as much exposure as games have right now, then it would have sold a lot more and we wont be getting the sequel on the psp.

theres suppose to be a demo out for this soon too.
now that should be interesting, i hope they use the E3 demo for it.
im really interested to see how they handle the combat, if i miss 1 QTE do i die, or is it a set amount.
or is it a certain one.
also i really hope they put in a retry button, what if i want to retry?

I'm looking forward to this game, but for Pete's sake, it's coming out the week after Dante's Inferno and Bioshock 2. I'm really interested in those two as well. On the other hand, there's almost nothing I'm interested around Christmas time, other than The Saboteur. PS3 sales went up 300% during December last year, when it wasn't even selling very well. This year it will likely be much higher. These guys may be good at making games, but when it comes to business, they don't have the sense that God gave a dumb animal.
