Silent Hill is arguably the creepiest, freakiest video game franchise out there, just in terms of sheer atmospheric tension and enough mystical fear to make your skin crawl. So yeah, bad dreams may be inevitable.

But when you're not 100% healthy, an experience like that can have a debilitating effect. According to GameGrep , a 35-year-old man caused a blackout at the Sophia Hospital in the Netherlands because he believed he was actually in Silent Hill. Nobody got hurt and thankfully, "Jan H." didn't take the next step and start taking weapons to patients he believed might be demonic mannequins, but elevators did get stuck and employees were forced to manually respirate patients in the intensive care unit. It took 45 minutes to restore power but like we said, there were no reported injuries. In court last week, the man said he suffered a psychological break of some kind that told him if he shut the hospital's power down, he could get a toothbrush that would let him solve a Silent Hill puzzle. As a result, Jan H. was found not guilty; the ruling said he "had no idea of the true consequences of his deed" and will now have the benefit of psychiatric treatment.  Perhaps it was the hospital environment that triggered the psychosis; those of you who are familiar with the franchise will know what I mean…

Well, having my degree in Psychology, I'd say none of this is impossible and the ruling is fair but you watch…the anti-game activists will find some way to protest against Konami. Just wait. You'll see.

The guy obviously played too much SH.
The world is perfect, it's round, so is entertainment.
Stop video game production for good and we'll be seeing the end of the world even before 2012 comes.
Time for more anti-game activist and we say BRING IT ON!!!

Silent Hill siren or Siren: Blood Curse siren? Two very different possibilities, but both just as insanity-prone. Unless you meet up with Howard Wright. (my hero)

There was an article i read back in 2004 about censorship in games and how these companies concentrate too much on obvious violence ala GTA rather than the games that actually ARE the most explicit and downright psychologically damaging, the Silent Hill games (1-4).

Of course, this isn't a worry anymore as Silent Hill ended that very year and won't return.

thats crazy.

none the less im in belief that if a person does an act wether in his right mind or not, the act was done therefore guilty!

Makes me wonder what exactly he was seeing. If I believed I was actually trapped in Silent Hill, I would probably need psychiatric treatment too!

fatal frame anyone?

Fane1024

Almost nobody has played Fatal Frame because you can never find it in stores, like WAY too many interesting Japanese game series. They just don't ship enough copies Stateside (e.g., Demon's Souls).

I played part of Silent Hill. At about halfway through I stopped playing. This game made resident evil feel like a nursery rhyme. It was a little too effective of a horror game for me. The game doesn't deserve to be dragged through the mud, because of this guy. That would be punishing the developer instead of this unstable person.

I've been thinking about getting the original Silent Hill for the PSP since my PS3 already has loads of stuff to play on it. Is the horror lost when on a handheld, or is the experience largely unchanged?

Edit: Keep in mind that I play horror games the way they're meant to be: alone in the dark, with surround sound if possible. 😛

There is nothing more disturbing than the SH series.
The first game was so creepy I might get it again just so I can torture myself a little more 🙂
You should get it, I bet it's still as scary as it was back them.

Continuing to play in the dark may help keep the creepy feel on a handheld, but that's just my opinion. You might ask Lotusflow3r, he's a big fan of Silent Hill and may have it on psp.

Cool beans, I'll probably get it. It's only 6 bucks on PSN and I don't feel like leaving my house. Viva Laziness!

Lotusflow3r

headphones only, dark room, no distractions should still keep it scary.

Bare in mind the game hit 10 years of age this year and it still puts horror games and films to shame.

*NOTE TO ALL* DON'T GET ANY NEW "SILENT HILL" GAME THAT COMES OUT! im passionate about the series and its hurtfull to watch it become dumbed down and ruined by these terrible western insults. Silent Hill is a franchise that ended in 04. (i will put this on any Silent Hill article because it deserves respect)

I played SH1 after playing SH2 and I didn't find it as scary as SH2, but for $6 I would definitely recommend it. I don't think playing it on PSP will hurt the experience, as long as you play it in the dark and with headphones.

Yeah, me too. Probably some junkie trying to shut down the hospital so he could loot some painkillers. Blamed video games like everyone else when he got caught. The media loves those kinds of stories.

We can't be certain, people rarely get off on these things unless they have a proper psychological evaluation and are found well I think the medical term can only be pronounced by flubbing your lips with your index finger.

Fatal Frame…scary but, not up to Silent Hill standards at all.

So, did he get the toothbrush? Or is the puzzle left unsolved? I have two hospitals within 20mins drive from here, tempted to try and solve this one myself.
