Sony wants you to see the PlayStation 3 as a complete home entertainment platform and if you're a movie buff, you can't afford to miss out on what Sony's machine provides.

Why? Well, besides the obvious benefit of Blu-Ray, Sony Computer Entertainment America and Netflix have announced they are forging a partnership that will bring thousands of films and TV shows from Netflix into your homes via the PS3. Netflix plans to start streaming in the horde of content (at no additional cost to Netflix members in the US) some time next month, so this new service is right around the corner. You can read the announcement and the full press release at the PlayStation Blog ; it's bound to give more consumers yet another reason to purchase a PS3 this holiday season. With the user base of the PS3 growing to 9 million units in the US this year and over 11 million Netflix members, this seems like a logical and ultimately beneficial fit. For only $8.99/month, Netflix gives you access to unlimited movies and TV episodes, so there's no surprise it's one of the most popular services available today. Said SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton:

"The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows. Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all."

At first, PS3 owners will need a special "instant streaming Blu-Ray disc" that will be free and made available to all Netflix members. This disc "leverages Blu-Ray's BD-Live technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system." Want to get a jump on the fun? Feel free to sign up now and be ready to download to your heart's content in only a few weeks time!

360 loses another exclusive option. Awesome! But I live a block from a Family Video so I probably won't be utilizing this right now. Perhaps in the future.

If ME2 makes its way to PS3 with more content and if Sony introduces the highly-demanded cross game voice chat, these should be final nail in 3fixme's coffin!

You'd have to screw with a program like pay $40 for PlayOn and install an OS and do some more b/s to actually watch Netflix on the PS3.

It shouldn't be that much of a pain, that's why ppl are excited.

Wonder what this will do to the psn movie sales. I may sign up an stop renting from the psn altogether. Too many psn time outs.

Netflix's library has older titles, while PSN is mostly about new releases. Also Netflix's targets people who watches movies on a constant basis, while PSN doesn't. And regarding PSN timeouts… well, I sincerely don't know what that is since I never get them.

I've been having issues lately trying to download files that are 2gb or bigger from the PSN. Probably my Internet service but no one knows for sure.

Diggity, I called them. Their psn techs said it's my equipment and ISP. I switched over the weekend. They are coming to day so well see if Sony is right. I was getting "up too" 7mbps with qwest dsl. Comcast said I will get 16mbps with them. So maybe that will make the difference.

yeah, my thoughts exactly, at first I was thinking pretty cool, then i read that it would be availabel to about 9 million ps3 users, then i read a little closer and saw that it was a USA exclusive as Netflix apparently doesn't have the rights to distribute digital media here in the Uk/Europe and their counterpart lovefilm doesn't seem to be on the ball game over here.

Now I can honestly say I have absolutely no reason to pay 50 dollars a year for Live anymore. Netflix was the only reason I had been using the gold services for a while anyway as I do all my online playing on the PS3.

Looks like it is the 360 for the few must play exclusives and the PS3 for everything else.

It only does everything, and a little more now.

Is this really a good thing? I thought the library of movies is rather old that Netflix allows you to stream. I've heard that this is a popular service, but really, I don't know why, if the movies have already been around for awhile, what is the point? I must be missing something… somebody clue me in on this please????

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

i think what you are referring to is play on… which lets you stream from your pc to your ps3 i blv, and has a list of older titles, and some new titles. i tried the beta and would have continued on considering play on offers alot of dif. features but is a little steep in price. but yes you are right from what i seen the list of movies from net flix that play on offered was older ones! still good ones though!

this is something entirely dif. and is straight from net flix. if you are a net flix subscriber then you can take advantage of having netflix on your ps3 via to start an instant streaming disc you use to access netflix database of movies! this means any movie netflix has to offer any tv show net flix has to offer you can take advantage of and instead of waiting for it to show up in your mail box can download or stream it to your ps3!

what im curious about is will there be movies i can download in hd?

well yean and again i will say netflix doesnt just offer old movies! they offer new releases as well, and what im hoping is this will resolve the "being on a list" and having to wait for new releases to show up in your mail box! im hoping that well be able to dl, or stream new movies as well.

the problem i always had with net flix was id put a check next to a movie i wanted like 2 months b4 it even came out, in my little que of movies i had. but then the movie wouldnt show up for like 2 months after it was released im guessing becus of high volume of people wanting that same movie! hopefulyy this resolves alot of the issues ive had with net flix! all in all this is a good thing!

Jojoman, while what you say is true, however, do old movies get you excited? To make this a relevant feature, you need new releases, not just a library of old movies.

And I could be wrong, as I am a PS3 owner, not a 360 owner, and I am not familiar with the Netflix service. But if they are going to charge 9 bucks a month, I want new releases. Just saying…

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

apparently you didnt read what i had said! which is fine, but for $8.99 a month through netflix you have unlimited new, old, movies and tv show rentals.

now what i wanna know is if this is true for the PS3. i know you can get any movie available through net flix mailed to you. but are they going to offer any movie new or old immediatley for download? i would assume so considering the instant streaming disc, is like access to there database! but we'll have to wait and see i guess!

bigrailer, I did read what said. I do understand the concept of Netflix mail rental, and I myself do the Blockbuster by mail, so I am familiar. What I was questioning, and from what I read from you, that you are not totally clear on it either, is whether or not the streaming aspect of it is going to be for new releases. If it is, then I would be rather interested in this, but I thought I remember somebody telling me that uses it on 360 that it is for movies that have been out for rental for months, nothing newly released.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

yes i am unclear on that part becus it seem everything is being withheld! i thought you were referring to netflix in general, and im assuming it will be the same or atleast it better!

on another note im wondering how much will be in hd as well? but yea if its older movies then whats the point? i would see interest in movies released 2 months ago but any further and it seems pointless… i guess thats what will sell me is if like the PSstore they will release new movies weekly to dl for rent!

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

my worstnightmar,

apparently on the netflix website it says and SOME new movies! meaning probably on one or two new releases a month! im not sure!

but this still is a good deal, i mean its an awesome price for unlimited movies and tv shows, plus you still get the benefit of being able to get those new releases in the mail.

now will there be an hd selection?

I belong to Netflix and there is a difference between what is available on disc as opposed to Instant Watch which is the streaming part of Netflix. And let me tell ya, the Instant Watch library is pretty lame and most of the selection is standard definition. I have found some hidden treasures though.

It's still pretty damn cool that Sony is moving ever forward.

Sweet! A nice add for PS3. There aren't as many movies/shows as I'd like available through the streaming service (I've been using on 360 up to this point, I'll let you guys know how it compares to PS3 once I get it configured) but I've definitely caught some nice stuff there. It's a sweet option to have, no question — no games on tap, waiting for the next netflix disc to arrive? Stream a flick or a show.

seeing as how i already have a netflix account, this news is awesome!! yea, there's not that many good movies available for instant viewing but, giving me more bang for my buck certainly helps… i hope the streaming video is better than what i get from netflix on the PC… it's youtube quality video that streams… i hope it's better than that on the PS3…

One more 'exclusive' bites the dust.

There is something noteworthy here. The majority of Sony's exclusives or exclusive capabilities are in-house. In-house companies, first party developers, they all share Sony's business interests.

Microsoft relies on 3rd parties. 3rd parties business interests are not Microsoft business interests.

So, just how many exclusive games/features are there now? Remember most of the high profile '360 exclusive' RPGs are coming to PS3 now as well.

Are we again seeing the triumph of long term thinking against short term thinking?

It's hard to get the picture when the ISP puts a cap on the downloads. 500mb a month, I can't even download a demo anymore. I should be living in Japan because they have the best internet in the world.

TheHighlander

500MB a month? A month?

Just an online 8 player game of Burnout Paradise will burn through about 5MB per minute. You'd have 100 minutes of game time before your ISP locks you out for a month. God grief, with a cap that small, you almost have to using dial up.

bigrailer19

some isp limit this! especially if your in a rural area! i could find next to no isp except the cell phone companies offering there wireless network cards for like 39.99 a month but with a 500mb cap! its small but the world feeds off the net now days!

atleast dsl should be everywhere, but the phone companies are too lazy to bring broadband elsewhere! its in such high demand now that its needed! the alternatives are the shady sattelite net, or this usage cap! tough deal im sorry burnout!

TheHighlander

@bigrailer
DSL is constrained by distance to the CO. For rural areas, cable (yeah, unlikely), cell (access problems in rural areas, unlikely) or satellite might be a better bet.

Damn ISP puts a cap in my ass every month (gangsters). I better stop posting, else I will end up paying extra money for every time I go over. See you next month when my cap gets renewed.

Speaking of caps, watch out with Netflix DVD rentals. If you rent too many movies in a short period of time, they will be slow to send you your next set of movies from your list. Google Netflix limits and you will see. Most disc are scratched so bad that it looks like someone dragged it on the concrete. Most of the streaming movies are crap that people refuse to watch. If they add good movies to the streaming section then it would be worth it. It is still good that people now have the Netflix option on their PS3.

ummmm, ew? Burnout are you Canadian too? If so who is your ISP? there is no ISP that I know of that provides under 15GB/mo thats including the crappy Bell and scummy Rogers. I have Bell and pay $46 for 100GB/mo. Well I was only getting 60gb/mo for $46 but I talked them into an extra 40gb/mo. A little advice, tell your ISP you are going to change companys caue you can get a better deal. Watch how fast they start kissing your ass. trust me on this one. I told them I could get unlimited bandwidth for $34.95 which is true, I can and she did everything she could to keep me as a customer.
