Before all of you make the standard Valve and Gabe Newell insults, please bear in mind that we're all gamers; we all want good games, regardless who makes 'em. …right?

In the past, Valve has freely admitted that they don't have the right team to effectively and successfully produce a game for the PlayStation 3. They even said they were interested in maybe working with the PS3 but they simply don't have the experience; they've said they need "PS3 guys" in the studio. Well, Sony has offered their assistance according to the latest edition of the HipHopGamerShow , and we're wondering if Valve is willing to accept their help. At this point, we'd love it if something like Left 4 Dead showed up on the PS3 in the future, and while we're not as impressed with past Valve projects as other gamers and journalists, we're fully aware of what they're capable of. But let's not forget that Sony has offered their assistance to third-party designers since the start of the generation, primarily because developers would complain about the difficulty of the PS3. So our only question is this: "if Valve wanted help, they could've had it all along…what took them so long to ask and/or accept?"

Look, we're all for ambitious developers looking to make things better for us, but Valve has already obtained a poor reputation amongst the PS3 crowd over the past few years and by now, they're going to have to really work to regain some lost trust and admiration.

^Above: OMG! I never knew that Counter Strike was a fan made mode! Somehow I always imagined that Valve used the Half-life code to make a MP game out of it. Thanks for the info.

And BEN, seriously, I am disappointed. I mean, you took out time to write about something that appeared on HHG. Really? I mean really? Was it worth it? Yeah, I think not 🙂

This almost seems like a slap in the face to Valve. Every other studio on the planet can handle the ps3, but Sony has to hold Valve's hand for them to make it happen.

I love Half-Life and i always get the pc copy so i dont care if it hits ps3 or not, but it never hurts to have more ps3 games. As long as they dont waste their time porting L4D. I hate that game.

There is little value to Valve to support the PS3 when supporting the Xbox 360 cost very little over creating the game for their main platform… the PC. The Source Engine is a DirectX based Engine and thus the porting processes is extremely easy in comparison with porting over a game to the retarded Cell. So the return on investment is much safer and they already have a much larger fan base on the 360 than they have on the PS3… no reason to go there unless they let someone else take the brunt of cost of development like they did with HL2. What would you do if one bad game could ruin the lives of a couple of hundred employees? They may have breathing room with Steam, but they can ill afford to make bad decisions while having no real financial backing outside of their own earnings.

I think they should accept Sony's help and start something new with the ps3 as the base platform. Sony should also help developers learn to compress ps3 games for ports to the xbox instead of getting their ports.

I have no problem with this. If Sony wants to provide aid to inexperienced PS3 developers like Valve, I'm all for it.

first they said they didn't, but in order for Gabe to get as many cheeseburgers as possible they will have to sell more games so they need the PS3 base. (That one's for you Ben)

I think Valve makes fine products, the only problem is Mr. Newell is a former Microsoft employee, so his system of choice is the PC. Since Microsoft has a stranglehold on the PC market, they convince him to make games for the 360. Otherwise I'm not entirely sure they would bother making games for any console.

Having said that, I believe that's the reason they haven't asked for help with the PS3 yet. They prefer the PC and would rather not deal with consoles. If Sony is offering them help, I think they should take it. It seems most people I know would buy Valve games if they were on the PS3. (Personally, if I had a nice computer, I'd prefer to get Valve games on PC, making it possible to LAN with my housemates, but I'd settle for a nice PS3 version.)

If Sony is offering them a hand, I say they should take it. It never hurts to widen your base.

im more than happy to have sony walk them through cuz wat the hell is wrong with them saying that its too hard to develop for the ps3 many other developers said the same continued at it and many succeeded with good results they need to stop acting like babies and step it up hopefully sony doesnt need to hold their hands for long for them to realize that they can do the job cuz if not i think they should give up as developers since the industry needs people that are flexible with their works

This is really nothing new tbh. Sony has offered high-end support from many internal studios, including but not limited to specialized teams in Naughty Dog and Insomniac.

I'm of two minds here. I personally prefer to see Sony putting its muscle behind single platform releases only…not out of a fanboy war mentality, but because their exclusive games are better than the MP ones. Plain and simple. So, I'd rather see them keeping it in-house…on the one hand. On the other though, I'd also like to see the PS3 sell tons and tons, so really…whatever brings more people to the fold I'm also ok with.

I think it's a good move by Sony. Either we'll see if Valve really want to develop on the system or we'll see some more great games come our way. The worst that could happen is PS3 owners not experience what are apparently great games, and thats already happening anyway so there is nothing to lose.

WorldEndsWithMe

Here is what it basically comes down to people, Valve does PC games, 360 is just a stripped PC so they got a boner for it. It was easy to ignore the PS3 base in the past but the tide is turning and the base can no longer be ignored in terms of potential profit. It really is only a matter of time before the console sales are dead even.

all they have to do is announce half life 2 episode 3 for the ps3.
if that happened the mental hospitals would be full because everyone would go insane.
and i think that will likely happen since in a interview gabe was trying to excuse the sequel to L4D so early.
he did not actually say this, but its certainly like what it sounded like.
it sounds like they just did L4D 2 because its a cheap sequel which will bring in the big bucks, and that will give them enough cash to hire out some PS3 developers to help them make half life 2 episode 3.
rumor being this is going to be valves larges budget game, thats why im so excited for it.
valve have never disappointed me before and there not going to start now.

i mean come on how can you not like valve.
what other development studio would fly all the boy cotters out to their studio so they can try the game MONTHS before its due out.

what other development studio would fly to Australia to check out a fans mods.
now thats fan service for ya!

well think about how well it would do, its the type of game that is only shines in multiplayer, and online multiplayer is free on PS3 so they need to do the math.

Dancemachine55

Valve kinda disappoints by using the same engine and similar graphics for all their games for the last 8 years.

What I'm even more disappointed in is the Australian Classification Board for forcing a censored version of Left 4 Dead 2 onto Australian gamers.

This means no visceral gore, no dead bodies lying everywhere and no decapitations. Thank you Michael Atkinson and your protests against R18+ ratings in video games in Australia.

Seriously, most gamers are now importing it from the UK. I really do hate being an Aussie gamer sometimes.

Add to that Rock Band 2 not being released here in Aus and therefore no PS3 key code exists to export songs from Rock Band 1. Sucks so bad.

Mind you, I wasn't really interested in L4D2 because it just looked like a reskin of L4D with a few more melee weapons, so in that sense, L4D on my PC should do me fine for now.

… unless anyone can convince me L4D2 is wirth getting/importing.

im importing it from NZ.
i think NZ xbox 360 games will work with a Aussie xbox but ive gotta check up on that.
since it has not gone gold yet (or has it?) why dont valve just remove the region coding like the developers of ghostbusters did.

I got an idea, If valve needs a lot of help to get a ps3 game going. Just let Sony or an exclusive Sony studio like Naughty dog do the porting. Hell, the port of the valve game that Sony works on themselves may even be the better version. I rather support sony than a developer who talks $*** about a console and decided not to make games for it because it was too hard for them, and they could ask for help but dont even bother.

Well they have no excuse now really, only reasons left for 'good working versions' of their game not to appear on the PS3 are:

We don't want to tap into another pot of money
The PS3 scares us 🙁
Anything not x86 scares us
We are lame and need DirectX
or,
We are in the pocket of MR. M.Soft

They don't really make anything I'm interested in anyway, but if Sony wants to sponsor a remedial programming class for them, whatever. From what I've read, the 360 is a bit too complicated for them also. Gamespot's review of Half Life 2 says it "suffers from an erratic frame rate" right in the title of the review.

Granted I haven't played a lot of games by Valve, but the ones I did play, I wasn't overly impressed with. Of course I didn't get the first Half-life when it first came out, so that by the time I actually got around to playing it, there were way better games and graphics so it didn't do anything for me.

I did try the Orange Box, but it was the PS3 version, and that just wasn't the experience it could have been…But if that's the kind of effort that Valve will make for the PS3, then they can keep their games imo.

Ben –

Your statement of wanting good games regardless of who makes them may be correct, but there are a few things we need to consider when it comes to Valve, and companies like them.

– If Valve moves forward on the PS3, will the games be nothing more then inferior ports? I know this concerns you greatly due to your recent post.

– If Valve does not care about the PS3 and it's user base, why should I, an exclusive PS3 user care about his product?

– Unless Valve introduces an IP that is something special, what's the point? L4D was a game that was far over-hyped in my book.

– Does the PS3 actually need Valve? Not in my book. We have plenty of level one developers that are producing top flight exclusives for my system of choice. Naughty Dog comes to mind..
