Borderlands First DLC: “A Full-Fledged Expansion”

Downloadable content has been huge this generation and the more developers indulge us, the more we come to expect it. Heck, we even want the announcements before the game is even out!

According to GameSpot , Gearbox Software has revealed the first add-on pack for Borderlands , which is scheduled to launch this week (on the 20th) for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Apparently, this is a true-blue expansion called "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" and will cost only $9.99 on the PlayStation Network or 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Not surprisingly, the undead will be shambling all over the place on Zombie Island, and players will team up with the loopy scientist in question and try to recapture his hellish creations. You'll also get to explore an entirely new region called Jakobs Cove, so there will be plenty of extra gameplay. This is only the first of many pieces of extra content we can expect for this promising FPS/RPG, so it's good to know that we'll definitely get our money's worth. Hopefully, the game will be well worth the price of admission; we like its unique style and expansive scope, so it might just appeal to a great many people. The DLC detailed here will arrive "later this year" and we'll let you know when there's a solidified release date.

Yeah, it has to battle the rest of the insane October lineup, but you'll have had a week to beat Uncharted 2 …that's enough, right? Gotta move on eventually.

This DLC sounds pretty fun, I still am anxious to see some reviews and also waiting to see how I'm going to come up with the money for this game! In my opinion though, they should have just added this to the game, maybe after you beat it or something.

Man, it seems all you have to do is put zombies in something these days and it sells like hotcakes. I'm still waiting on the Borderlands reviews.

When I hear major DLC is prepared prior to a game's release it just makes me wonder, was this something that might have been originally intended for the full game but was cut out to squeeze an extra $10 from customers?

It's the way Pitchford (Gearbox CEO) thinks DLC should be done. He says he really enjoyed the GTAIV DLC but he felt it came out too far from the game's release. So Gearbox built DLC alongside the main game so they could extend the player experience for those that want it, while said gamers are still interested in the game. This DLC sounds like the Shivering Isles expansion so it may not have fit well within the 'normal' game world.

As for cutting content for extra money…
Sometimes developers really want to release something they couldn't fit in the game. Dragon Age: Origins will have launch day DLC because a certain character–and its side quest(s)–was cut due to time constraints. Part of the Bioware team really wanted that character in the game so they formed their own mini team to bring the character to the masses. The only practical way to due that, apparently, was DLC. Besides, we'll get it for free if we buy DA: Origins new (correct me if I'm wrong on that).

What kind of time constraints? If they had a separate team working on it and it is in fact out on launch day seems like timing was pretty good.

THIS GAME. I'm pretty stoked for this. I'm with WEWM though, if it scores well…between this MW2 and Uncharted 2 I will be content 'til GT5 or Gow3 which ever comes first (Gow3 Im sure).

Oh, a DLC before the game is out.
Count me out, I'll never ever ever ever buy DLC.
I buy a game, I just play it, developers release new map then screw it, I don't care.
I know I'm gonna get thumbs down for this but I'm gonna say it, DLC is the lowest thing any developers could do.
Even if it's cheap, it's still money.
Why release things one by one if you already have it ready?

A week to beat Uncharted yes, but to platinum it? Lord no. That end fight is going to ruin me on crushing…

i am so dreading U2 on crushing.
took me like 10 tries to destroy the tank on normal, crushing is going to be a BITCH!
i just realized im going to have to beat the game 3 times now 🙁
they should of made crushing unlock after any difficulty instead after hard only.
and i cant change the difficulty otherwise ill loose my trophy.

Im' not interested at all. Maybe I'll get a platinum trophie when the new Ratchet game comes out. Multiplatform games are like ladies don't bother me now.

I haven't seen a review for this yet so until you (Ben) say it's a must purchase, then I'll pass. I'm pretty suspicious of a company that puts out or announces dlc before a game even launches.
