Well, that's what a price drop can do for you.
It probably won't come as a big surprise to anyone, but it's still good news from Sony's angle: the official NPD numbers release in a week but in the meantime, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pacther has predicted that not only has the PlayStation 3 outsold the competition in the month of September, but the US market will also "return to double-digit growth following six straight months of negative figures." According to VG247 , Pachter expects total sales of $750 million, which would be a 21% increase over last year's $618 million, and concerning the console war:
"We estimate sell-through of 390,000 Wii hardware units (down 45% from last year), 350,000 Xbox 360 (up 1% from last year), and 410,000 PS3 consoles (up 76% year-over-year) as the price cuts for all three consoles spurred demand."
EEDAR expects a slightly less drastic overall increase – $716 million, a 16% boost – but they also agree that the PS3 should be tops in September, and that would be the very first time since its US launch back in November of 2006 that the PS3 was the biggest console seller in a one-month period. EEDAR also notes the continued success of the music genre as both Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band: The Beatles are surpassing sales expectations, but they say we might not have such a huge October as we did in 2008.
Well, last year's 2008 was arguably even more stocked than this year's, despite the emergence of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves . As it's not a multiplatform game, it really can't push October past last year's all on its own. But hey, things are still looking up for the industry and once again, it proves that without the software (and agreeable hardware prices) progress tends to falter.
all good news
For sho, Q4 is only going to get bigger though. With a few more exclusives and some good multiplat games coming Sony should have a great holiday season.
man SONY needs a win
and i would love to see the PS3 as this gen's winner lol i doubt but its said to be a year ahead of the PS2 and that is still going strong lol
Just like a warm cup of poozle, sweet like milk and honey.
though it is only predictions i am surprised to see that the ps3 only outsold the xbox by 60,000. thought it would be a lot more!
Remember xbox price cut too like a week after the ps3 did. Oh and also they offered a $50 rebate from sept 22 to oct 5. So minus the $50 , you could get a pro for $250. That's why if the ps3 wins it will be by a small margin.
Tough competion but I think the ps3 should be fine this holiday season. Don't worry what m$ is doing and just consentrate on themselves. Keep bringing those "dear playstation" commercials and well be just fine.
Some of the shine on the PS3 slim sales numbers was removed by some sales of the new model happening in August. The initial rush was very strong indeed. However as someone pointed out the 360 has had it's own price reduction in order to catch up with the PS3, and now the Wii has had it's cut too. Even so, the PS3 slim remains clearly the best hardware deal around, in bang for buck terms.
Last October is more packed than this October? What released back in 2008?
I can't believe the ps3 hasn't won a month since it launch back in nov 2006. Even then ps3 still selling good. Closing gap on m$ every year.
I remember it winning like 8-9 months in a row in 2008, but maybe that was worldwide. The numbers are ALL inaccurate, anyway.
I really expect PS3 to outsell the 360 from now on(the way it should be).Seeing as I am either watching a PS3 or PSP advertisement every commercial brake I must say that their marketing is on turbo drive.
Yeah i think this may be the case now.
definitely this holiday season that's for sure.
Everywhere except the USA. In the USA I expect things will settle down again and we'll see near parity for a while. However, the PS3 may eventually squeak a monthly lead over the 360 in future years. Microsoft has done a great job of gaining market share in the US, as well as convincing a large % of the gaming market that XBL has no equal, and that poor hardware reliability is no reason to buy a competing product. I'm really not sure of the psychological aspects of this mind-set that MS has managed to instill in 360 owners, but it's definitely there.
Highlander, I think that it is the "Jim Jones approved Kool-Aid" that you get with the purchase of a new 360. I bought mine off a guy so I didn't get it and can still see through their money grubbing ways 🙂
in a way, this is a surprise to a certain extent if u put in the fact that the latest halo was released in the same month as well.
everyone knows what happened when halo3 was released couple years ago, it was a huge hit. and moved some gazillion 360 consoles.
no offense to halo fanboys, but microsoft's approach with halo wars, halo odst, halo reach, halo 5000, halo rpg:the end of time, halo3.5 etc.. is basically saturating the market just to make the extra buck. it would be better if they just wait a year or 2 and release a halo4.

Halo 3 was the last? Am I wrong? Last main Halo game that is. Anyways… I see what your saying. And lol at the Halo 3.5. Yea, they try to squeeze out every buck. Games like Halo and Resistance and God of War need an end, you cant just keep making those games like you could with Call of Duty, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto and what have you. Halo needs an end.
I don't recall Halo 3 causing a huge spike in 360 sales, only a few hundred thousand extra, on par with MGS4.
Feel free to correct me, if you have stats.

yea thats what it is. few extra hundred thousand. i was exagerating. i dont have the exact numbers but if i remember correctly, it was somewhere along the lines of 700k.
Ben.
October 2009 features Uncharted 2 and Ratchet and Clank ACIT. I believe that Tekken 6 and GT PSP also arrived during October 2009. Demon Souls as well?
On the other side of the console debate Forza 3 lands during October 2009 as well.
It just seems like October 2009 has plenty of good titles, even if Halo3 ODLC isn't turning out to be quite as good a seller as Halo 3 was…
Expansions never sell as well as the original title. 😉
Thank goodness, I was afraid others were gonna follow suit. Making half games with a full price tag.

man i despise Halo 3 oDLC lol it also has the # 3 in its name lol
i need realism and Uncharted, Killzone (physics), and GT fulfill thoes needs
360 could never compet
This is how it should be
TO be honest I don't really care what US gamers do
But Japan and Europe are definitely grabbing the best console this generation.
It always seems the US is last in everything when compared to the world ("developed nations")
It was the case with cellphones, it's the case in this generation of consoles.
Anyway, the price is not a excuse anymore, hah!
Price is always an issue. If it wasn't, then i would be a spoiled brat.
Aren't we all spoilt? I believe so.
There's no hiding it ^_^
And yeah price is always an issue for us kids.
But if I was an adult with safe income then gaming is where it's at for my spare time, heh.

I've noticed an increase in ps3 adds on TV which is a good move by Sony. They should whip out some nice bundles these holidays in the same fashion as the Killzone/MGS (if memory serves me right), except maybe something like inFamous/(sport title) or 1 game plus a free psn download (Fat Princess/Flower etc).
Wii Fit Plus sold more than 340,000 in japan, I just don't understand how can this stupid little thing sell so much?
Nintendo has subliminal messaging satellites.
Isn't it funny how Jack Tretton said "a ps3 victory is good for the industry", and then you hear that in the same month the ps3 wins, the game industry turns in some growth.
I hope more studios move to making the PS3 the lead development platform, so far, all that have done so, have proved it is win win for everyone.
Well, I plan to add to that growth by adding a Slim to my Fat 60 gig.
