If you never had the opportunity, you might want to find Doom III if you're a die-hard FPS fan. It was a fun, atmospheric, freaky experience that was well worth the price of admission.

Those who have played it are likely looking forward to the next installment, and although we haven't heard much in the way of details, it seems id Software has been working on it for the past year. According to European gaming site GameGuru , we learn Doom 4 has been in development since August of 2008, as evidenced by Lead Programmer Michael Dickheiser's work experience. You can see it there at the bottom of the listing; it's where he says he has been involved in the creation and production of the fourth Doom installment, which he wants to call the "best FPS game ever made." Of course, designers are always making these bold statements – and there's always a tendency to exaggerate on a resume, right? – but it's good to know they're diligently working away on the game. If they're this far along, we expect to see some information before the year is out, and it'll be interesting to see how id Software has kept up-to-date, what with the likes of Killzone 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 making their marks in 2009.

Really, I very much enjoyed Doom III , even if the memory is a little vague right now. I just remember the coolness of the flashlight and the fearful intensity of the some of the encounters.

I'm assuming this news article is here because Doom 4 might come to consoles? I'm not really interested in old worn out PC games. Doom hasn't been anything special since Quake 2.

Yes, I would assume that. Doom III was on the Xbox, after all.

Interesting… Nope, not going to pay 60 bux for another Doom game. Beyond their mastery of everything 3D, id cannot make a compelling story worth anything close to what we have today.

What you say does not make sense. It is the Doom games BEFORE Quake 2 that were nothing too special. Doom 3, which came after Quake 2, did many things differently and better.

First off, there is so much you can interact with in the world of Doom 3. You can go to the Space Station's cafeteria and play arcade games, watch the news, and speak to the NPCs. You could never do any of that in past Doom titles. Heck, the only thing you did do was shoot stuff, get bigger guns, and shoot bigger enemies.

Doom 3 contains one of the most intense atmospheres in any game, not just in the FPS genre. Nearly every corner you turned caused you to look twice at any shadows, just to make sure that they weren't another monster. As a personal observation, Doom 3 and Dead Space's atmospheres are very similar. Anyone who's played both titles will probably agree with me.

This brings me to the incredible lighting system. Doom 3, in my opinion, has some of the best, most realistic lighting in any video game. The way your flashlight reflects, casts shadows, and illuminates environments is simply awe inspiring. Also, when a dangling light is hit by an enemy or shot, the ensuing light show is very realistic.

The guns, enemies, and storyline are still pretty much the same as past Doom games, but I think that was more fan-service rather than creative design. Although now that I think about it, it was kind of cool, not to mention nostalgic, to shoot the zombies, imps, and demons from the old games, only with better graphics and a higher resolution.

So, you see? Doom 3, a Doom game that came after Quake 2, did add some nifty innovations to the otherwise bland series. Also, I have failed to mention, that with every Doom game released, the gaming world usually witnesses a huge leap in terms of technical prowess.

I am looking forward to this iteration very much!

Wolfenstein and Doom were the first FPS games I played back in the early 90's, and even though Wolfenstein 3D was evidently a poor update, I'm really hoping Doom 4 fares better. I still have nostalgia for those formative games, ya know?

I think Quake might have been the 1st 3D game / FPS I ever played. In the basement of my friends house back in the days of windows 95.

This is old news to me, but I'm still waiting to hear more about the storyline since it's not a sequel or a reboot like the previous one. Should look even better than DOOM 3 thanks to the ID Tech 5 engine. And it's been in production since May of '08. It was first announced the following August. And most likely consoles will get it too since Bethesda is publishing it. Though I'll be picking up the PC version.

ooooooooooooooooo yea! cant wait for this.
doom 3 is the only game i have played this gen that i can call scary.
i remember staying up all night with my cuz and getting told off by my parents because it would be 4 in the morning and the house was light up like a christmas tree.
i could never play that game with the lights off, nothing is as scary as doom 3 not even fear.
scariest game of all time would have to go to the suffering.
now that s*** was twisted as a mother ^%$#$%
but ID said druing quakecon that there not talking about doom 4 till next year, once RAGE! is out(another game im dying for).
once RAGE! is out the doom 4 floodgates will open, cant wait.
but i doubt this will be out before 2011

DOOM 3 had it's "jump" moments, but I have to say that Dead Space was scarier. It's going to be nice seeing these two go at it with the terror factor. Now if only Silent Hill and Resident Evil would add that element to their respective series again.

the only thing I can think of that will keep doom 4 from being the best is the lack of outstanding multiplayer. I mean I know it will have it but doom has always been a single player fps.

I agree (for once), Doom is a long running series, not just a new title scraped together for profit. So Shhhh.

I personally would find it interesting if Doom IV wasnt so dark, but more bizzare, Visually like DOOM1 with weird scif-fi interiors and warped exteriors like the green sky. and vibrant blue water.

nooo keep the darkness that was the best part about doom 3.
you never knew what was coming next, and why the ^%$# this sh*t was going on.
it was a crazy game and i feel guilty for not finishing it.
#82 on my to do list.

I disagree, I have always liked Doom but I didn't like 3 very much. Yes thank god I played it on the PC. I always thought Quake was better, the 1st was a blast but the second I loved. Maybe they can do a better job with IV, but like Chuck has stated, it could just be another FPS added to the BEHEMOTH genre that no one cares about.

I have a great deal of faith in the game Rage. It looks amazing for a multiplat, and id software was talking about pushing the PS3 further because it has more power than the 360.
