Maybe it's because the gaming press is much bigger than it used to be, and the members are much better at scoring hordes of information and media earlier than ever before. Because this is the second time in less than a week that a developer has tried to convince us that, despite all the coverage you may have seen, you still don't know everything there is to know.
Just a few days ago, Infinity Ward said there are "some huge surprises" that will come along with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 . And now, Gearbox Softare's CEO Randy Pitchford has something similar to say about their upcoming RPG/FPS, Borderlands . According to That VideoGame Blog , he says what we've seen so far is only "from the noobie areas of the game." As a "for instance," that screenshot through the link depicts the "real bad guys;" members of the Crimson Lance. Pitchford said:
"We’ve been trying really hard to hold things back and not reveal too much and spoil most of the game. Yes, it has been mentioned that Borderlands has other environments in the game like snowy mountaintops and the military installations, but we aren’t showing it! Remember all of those movie trailers you’ve seen that give away all the best stuff and the whole damn story before you’re even at the theater? Yeah, we think that sucks too."
In some ways, we think this is a bit of posturing on the part of developers, simply because they don't want gamers viewing all the available coverage online and making a purchase decision based on what they see (although, how else are you going to do it?). But on the other hand, we know this particular title is supposed to be downright massive in size and scope, so we don't really doubt Pitchford's claims. Anyway, Borderlands is set to arrive on October 20, and we know a lot of you are already interested.
