Will Capcom Unveil A New Onimusha?

Perhaps you've forgotten, but Onimusha is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed action franchises in history, and we all know how many people would love to see a new installment.

So the question is, will Capcom ever revisit the series and give those action aficionados what they crave? Several years ago, executive producer Keiji Inafune told GameSpy that a portable Onimusha effort may be in the cards if the fans clamored for it, but it never materialized. Ever since, those who recall the games with a great fondness have been hoping Capcom would produce a new entry for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it may not be out of the realm of possibility… As VideoGamesBlogger noted, a movie adaptation is headed our way in 2011, and it'll even boast the same actor that the Dawn of Dreams character model was based upon: Taiwanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro. On top of which, the series has always fared relatively well in the marketplace and just as a brief history lesson, the original Onimusha was one of the very first top-notch PS2 games back in 2001. Of course, Devil May Cry released that same year as well, and Capcom has been more interested in furthering that franchise over the years (understandably so; DMC rocks ).

But that doesn't mean we don't want a new Onimusha . Perhaps Capcom will reveal a new entry at the Tokyo Game Show in a few weeks time; if they do, we can guarantee you it'll be one of the biggest pieces of news of the event.

I always get excited before the big game conventions, because so many possibilities are thrown out there.
I've enjoyed the 'Onimusha' series quite a bit, and a new installment in the series (preferrably on home consoles) would be great news.

not very thrilled about it, cuz feels like they are all the same, played the first one on PS2, never finished the rest and never seriously looked at them after.

Onimusha, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warrior Orochi — These franchise are all so similar and their warrior looks always the same– a few at the beginning were fine, too many, feel tiring.

onimusha was great, i played all the series in ps2 but ..but i would still prefer if they could remake/remaster Dino crises or sumthing of that nature from capcom only…
that would be fantastic… it been long i saw some realistic dinosaurs..

Not to dismiss the Onimusha series (I own the first three), but I'm still looking for a proper samurai game. By which, I mean a game that treats both kendo/kenjitsu and bushido seriously (katakana are sharp; one blow should be deadly). If a new Onimusha fits that bill, bring it on.

Way of the samurai (japan only) is a ps3 exclusive that is entirely dedicated to the art.

I know, but as you said, Japan only. I could import, but I'd rather have a localized version and I rarely buy games at full price, much less import prices.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

The swords may be capable of dealing with a human quickly, but how many human opponents have you faced in an Onimusha game… other than Ranmaru which only takes place at the beginning of Onimusha 3? I dispatched him with a fast chain of four normal Issen strikes (not the deflect ones) and he was slain with the fifth issen that is part of the cutscene following the battle. He was defeated so quickly it was almost humorous.

Also speaking of Issen, they kill a good majority of every enemy (except bosses) with one hit. Given in later games the damage was dependant on how strong a sword you wielded, the Issen attacks were always powerful.

Mastering this technique is the only way to beat the "critical only" difficulties on Onimusha 2 and 3, as well as the easiest way of beating the Oni difficulty featured in Dawn of Dreams.

@Sol

Just to be clear, I wasn't saying Onimusha isn't the game it should be (with the demons and all), just that it isn't the game I wanted it to be. I want a realistic samurai game in which combat plays more like a fighting game than a beat-em-up, but with emphasis on the adventure (with a full-fledged story) rather than on the action (killing waves of enemies).

If they use their MT Framework engine then no thanks. That engine doesn't run well on the PS3.

one classic really old game i would love to see resurrected would be tenchu Z.
that was one of my favorite games back in the day.
proper sword wielding stealth action.

Tenchu, the only ninja games that try to be NINJA games. Too bad they haven't really evolved since Wrath Of Heaven, if not earlier.

I would welcome another Onimusha, Thouthe gh i never played the 4th game. but i cant imagine them keeping classic R.E 1ike control system like 1&2. just as long as its not an over the shoulder action game o.0

I would love an Onimusha on the PS3. I just played Demon Siege a while back on my PS2 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm a bit confused here when you say that the character model from Dawn of Dreams is based off of Takeshi. Akechi Samanosuke Hidemitsu is based off of him. Soki isn't; however, Tenkai's other name is Samanosuke.

And I want another Onimusha title now, please. I'll go into a state of euphoria if Samanosuke is in it. I don't mind what the next story-line will be, whether or not he's in it, as long as I can expand my Onimusha collection.

DMC is cool, too.
