The PS3 Slim and corresponding $100 price drop was bound to generate a sales spike…and so it has.
According to Joystiq citing GamePlan Insights Survey Data, sales of PS3 hardware at top retailers in North America were up 300% in the first week of September (based on week-over-week sales). In Europe, sales jumped quite literally 1,000% and the system shot off the charts in Japan; leaping 7,350%. In other statistics, PS3 exclusives Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III rank very high on the consumers Top 10 most wanted list, while other titles on the list include Final Fantasy XIII , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , and Assassin's Creed II . Unfortunately, there just isn't enough buzz about the stellar Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , as that one sits way down in the 25th position. Yeah, that's way too low for what could very well be the best game of 2009. But anyway, those insane PS3 sales are the primary topic here, and Sony should be satisfied by this fast start. The new $299 price tag and redesigned PS3 Slim are really proving to be highly appealing to gamers everywhere.
Now, we just need to see if these good sales continue on through the holiday season. There's plenty of software to keep the momentum, so…
dont npds come out today
I think software just came out, not hardware.
ah
Yess. 🙂
But if they were losing $14 on the $400 PS3, doesnt that mean that they are losing more money ALL OVER AGAIN?

that would be correct………
……..if the ps3's production costs didn't drop over by $250
250 is only the production they also gota ship it to gamestop, target, etc. and they cant sell it to them for 250 or else the stores wont make much money so in the end they're stil losin a fair amount of money
So does that mean they're losing more then they're gaining or they just had to play a large amount and wait and see if all that comes back and more?
All those analysts were saying how the PS3 SLim will only rise by 60%. If PS3 can maintain half of these sales consistently every week, it will definitely catch up to other consoles.
The last time Sony remarked on it, they said that yes they were losing per console hardware unit sold, however they were now making money on the PS3 model via downloads, games etc… So the model itself isn't in the red anymore, even if the unit itself is.
Sony sales:
psps
ps2s
and games
They'll be fine
Specially when production costs drop even more next year.
@ Xra897 – Buddy, the price dropped BY 250, not TO 250. By the generous %70 production drop Sony let loose not long ago it's easy to see that 299 is double what it costs to make. As for shipping, it's about 600usd to ship 300 PS3 slims.
This was inevitable. Everybody knew it.
lol article headlines like this 1 give me that "fake news" vibe (EX. Daily show w/ john stewart and colbert report) i don't know why… maybe cuz 1000% is seldomly used in legit news 😛
glad the sales are actually going up… glad i'm a part of this statistic twice 😛
lol japan jumped 7,350% and u see 1000% as suspicious….dont worry though i see what you mean and i agree
Great news. Loyalist vindication is on the horizon.
Congratz sony! ^_^
WAIT! Japan,7,350%?! Screw game consoles, has anything skyrocketed that much?!
true,it skyrocketed that much but they didnt have that much ps3 before the slim came out in japan so i can see why. hopefully this gets us more games in the future, though i dont know how im going to pay for it yet, cant find a damn job.
The Japanese sales figures for last two weeks were dismal (1/5 normal or worse); this week's were record-breaking.
With the FFXIII announcement (finally), sales should stay relatively high.

I remember when PS3 first came out… Everyone was talking about what it could be, & all the potential.
Now we can finally stop doing that (not as much, at least) & start talking about what PS3 already is. How exciting!
More ppl cave-in and joined the darkside, eh? Haha haha ha…Its like was written somewhere…
This is a great set-up for next year's software sales. Great move Sony. You waited to drop the price when YOU wanted to.
I can't wait til well-known IPs like GT5 and GoW3 come out. They're gonna blow games like Halo: Recon and Forza outta the water!

It doesn't matter if their loosing money on every ps3 sold. There bound to sell games like crazy to every one of those ps3 systems being sold. You know, you need games to play on all those new ps3!
Hopefully sony keeps this up. Keep those commercials coming. Just saw a ps3 commercial while watching opening night of nfl(steelers vs titans)
You need a PS3 to play PS3 games and vice versa…huh…never knew that. Looks like we learn something new everyday…
astronomical!
uncharted is as well known as other franchises but i know for a fact that ps3 will sell better than the 360 until it gets a 100 dollar price cut
the 360 got its price cut right after the ps3 did.
My brother is now a proud owner of a PS3.He upgraded from his 360 and really enjoys it for the free online and Blu-Ray player.
Now let Wii VS PS3 commence
That's the fight I've been waiting for
Nintendo VS Sony has ALWAYS been epic
Nintendo is a joke…
We kicked their ass after Pearl Harbor and well do it… oh wait their both japanese
PS3 is Sony's war machine.
It's great news about the spike. The big thing, however, will be where it sustains at. And especially where does it sustain relative to the 360 which also dropped its price.
I think after the spike, it's going to look a little uncertain for a while… maybe even fall behind the 360 in NA sales for a bit again… and then start overtaking the 360 more and more as big exclusives come out.
Sony tends to move slowly and deliberately. But once their plans are fully in play, they get these unstoppable steam rollers going.

well they said that ps3 sails are beating 360 sales 3:1 since the price cuts
PS3 "sails" to victory.
As someone that already owned a Fatty I'm VERY happy with my slim purchase. Using Bravia Sync is so convenient and I love having multiple PS3s for multiple room viewing. As always Sony delivers as promised.
"I love having multiple PS3s for multiple room viewing."
Aye, it's also very convenient to keep one around the main HDTV and one near your computer setup
I need to get me a Slim
Sorry I'm lazy, but could you explain the Bravia sync feature a little bit?
Thanks to a router both my PS3s are always connected to my computer's 4 TB of media.
You do need to get a Slim but wait for the bundles that await us in the next few months.
@Squirreldriver
Sure basically if you have a Bravia TV that supports Bravia Sync you can Sync the Bravia TV remote with the PS3 Slim. By doing so you're able to use the TV remote to move around the XMB and select various things just as you would with the gamepad. It's really convenient when watching media on your PS3, whether its BluRay, DVD, or media on the hard drive or media server. Also you're able to turn the PS3 automatically on by turning on the TV. There might be a few other featuers but as of right now I don't know about them.
It sounds like a pretty simple thing but I'll never go back after using the feature.

i cant get my ps3 to turn on once the TVs turned on, i can only get my ps3 to turn my TV on.
but i hope sony speeds up the process in a FW update because it takes forever to turn the TV on.
i can turn my PS3, speakers, TV on and change it to the correct input by the time the ps3 has turned on my TV and switched the input.
its just far to slow.
and i hope they bring back the auto game start on boot up.
before when i turned my ps3 on it automatically started the game, now it just turns on in the game menu, even though i have auto disk start up on.
change those 2 with a updated friends list like that one a fan made on the playstation blog and the xmb would finally be perfect.
That's a cool feature, and promotes brand loyalty…I've got 2 bravias with Sync that I haven't ever figured out before. I'm happy with my 80 gig but I may have to pick up a slim to check this feature out….among other reasons..lol.
Daaaaaamn! I knew the Slim would sell well but those are some crazy good numbers! I wonder what the month over month numbers are. Anybody know?
(kinda off topic)
I love the new 360 adverts I'm seeing! They're afraid to say that the PS3 and 360 cost the same now @ $299. They only mention that there was a $100 price drop, nowhere does it say $299. Excellent! *tents fingers*
The Japanese sales were better than at launch, so they were probably 5-10X the same week last year. Next week will be a better indication.
I would guess the EU numbers are similar.
It hasn't been a full month yet, but I bet this one (partial) week alone beats any non-holiday month to date.

It's great knowing your console won't go to hell *cough* RROD *cough*
Or that you don't have to spend an hour setting up xbox live subscriptions -_-
I didnt mind spending the time, its the money that I am glad I dont have to pay anymore. PSN FTW!
7300% increase in japan. Crazy. Xbox is no more.

To be fair, PS3 sales had collapsed completely the week before. That said, the sales numbers for the PS3 Slim were very, very good.
Hope this is a sign of what's to come.
this is just the beginning of the PS3 powerhorse domination… and it will be furthered by the software storms

Well.. wow ^_^
And when GT5 hits, I'm sure Europe's will go up even more.
