Earlier this summer, we specifically remember asking the question: "could Batman: Arkham Asylum become the best superhero video game ever?" Well, it has become the highest-rated superhero game already…but we had no idea that was enough to get you into the Guinness Book of World Records.

According to Electronic Theatre , the popular and downright superb action title was awarded a Guinness World Record for the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever." It has already received great scores from many major sources (two 9.5s from Game Informer, a 9 from GameSpot, a 9.3 from IGN, etc.) and it currently holds a 91.67 average review rating, so says Metacritic. Featuring an entirely original story by Paul Dini (5-time Emmy Award winner whose credits include "Lost" and "Batman: The Animated Series"), Arkham Asylum is one of the top games of 2009.  Said Gaz Deaves from Guinness World Records:

"We are so pleased to be awarding Batman: Arkham Asylum a Guinness World Record. It is a fantastic new game and due to the reaction of gaming experts we believe it has a well deserved place in the Guinness World Records book."

See, it's not based on any of the recent "Batman" films, which probably helped. The only problem we have is that they didn't wait for our analysis; we're working on it, but shouldn't you have waited ? Okay, maybe not…but anyway, our review should be coming for this weekend or Monday at the latest, so stay tuned for that…as if you didn't already know the game was pretty damn great. 😉

To me Batman's games as always been rated poorly because they have been. There has not been a cool Batman game ever since BATMAN from NES until now. Batman: Arkham Asylum its an awesome and very dark and fun game.. great job…

They really did a great job with AA, I'm glad it was received well. Batman deserves a great game.

I hear that the game is really good, but I'm going to have to agree with you a bit Ben. Isn't it a little too early to give that title away? although I guess if a better one comes out they can just change it over.

Here comes my skepticism again..lol.

This sounds more like a marketing ploy. After someone realized that the game was getting good reviews, they paid Guiness to put that in their files. It's simple marketing, but will probably be effective. After all they can now put that title on their boxes to sell….

Yes, because I'm sure Guinness can be bought off…Is there a spot in there for the world's biggest bribe?

This peaked my interest so I looked into it. You can send a free application to the book of records and they will get back to you within 4-6 weeks. I don't think the game has been out for that long…

or You can chose to fast track your application for 400pounds (I don't have the symbol on my keyboard..lol) and Guiness will look at your application in 3 business days…My guess is that someone developing for the game opted for this option to help boost sales, although by the looks of the general consensus, they didn't need to as the game sounds like it might sell itself.

Don't be suprised though if you start seeing little stickers on the plastic wrap that says this is in the Book of world records as a top rated game.

They may have asked Guinness to look the game over, but I'm sure that there is no way that they got in because of money. If you get a record, you had to have earned it and there is no question that this game is by far, the best superhero game ever made.

I'm broke but I really wanna play this so I might just rent it for now to experience the greatest superhero game ever with plans to buy it later on at a cheaper price at either Amazon or "Game Stop-In And We'll Rip You Off"…

The PS3 version is also outselling the 360 version.

A lot of folks are picking p the slim and this as thier first game. I want to play it bad, but funds are tight at the moment.

I wasn't completely enraptured with the demo mostly due to the fighting aspect of the game (single button, I thought, weak).
I picked it up on a whim to fill the time before WET comes out and wow…WOW. This game is amazing. I could go on about the graphics, voice acting and game play but you should just go buy it.
I am also understanding the nuances of fighting now that I get the combo system and going for trophies.

Great game! Took me about nine hours to get through it the first time. Working on second time while looking for everything.
My one complaint is that camera is a bit cumbersome at times.
If you're strapped for cash then rent it. You'll find it difficult to put down the controller so any rental period should be more than enough.

I got it off gamefly and man between playing "Infamous" (yes I finally got a hold of that game and playing it as hero)and "Batman:Arkham Asylum" it's tough not getting caught up in the gameplay. Hopefully D.C. Comics will let these guys make a Superman game.

Off to pick up my reserved copy in about 15mins =) i loved the demo but was still skeptical and awaiting reviews and was happy to see they pulled this one off. while i'm not a fan of the generic batman overall, the Arkham Asylum graphic novel is one of my favorite graphic novels ever and i do like the original animated series so was glad to see they primarily stuck with those aspects of the batman thing.

"A Serious House On Serious Earth" or "The Long Halloween"

Finished it on medium yesterday and the story line is simply amazing! I've got about 30 more Riddler challenges to find and then I'll be playing through again on hard.
I love the challenge rooms too. Especially the stealthy ones, those are my favorite!

I have to agree, this game is "The Dark Night" of video games. It's beyond words. The best way I can describe this game is this:
The combat of God of War, The Stealth of MGS4, and the atmosphere and puzzle solving of Bioshock.
Even if you don't like Batman (Sacrilege) you will enjoy this game.

I figured you were being sarcastic, but wasn't sure…tone of voice is so hard to read on the internet..lol. But I'm wondering why you were called a douche when I was the one who initially said that they paid to get this. Meh, whatever.

I still say that it's a marketing ploy, even if it didn't cost much. Someone had to have contacted Guiness in the first place. And obviously the game is well deserving of the rating, so why not play it up as much as possible?

This is suprising. Because you don't normally get good superhero games, as most of them are mediocre.

It's nice to see that this superhero game has finally made a difference.

Oh, and the joker challenge room is exclusive to playstation 3 =)

just because he started in a videogame doesn't make him not a super hero

He could also be a villain though. And as the game's name is Infamous, I think the emphasis is on the villainy.
