We just got finished telling you why Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves needed to be atop your holiday wish list , and now, we learn about even more crucial and enticing details.
In a recent ArsTechnica interview with Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra, the first words out of his mouth are, "I guarantee that this game couldn't be working on Xbox 360. It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this." It seems the team has really worked hard to push the PlayStation 3; they've completely filled up the Blu-Ray disc to "100%" as there is 25GB of data and as Balestra says, "we're using every single bit of it." As for the development aspect, he says they've been able to make it so the player will go through "the entire game without loading," and Uncharted 2 won't have a mandatory install, either. Balestra goes on to talk about the capability of the PS3's internal capabilities:
"The ability to use the RSX [the PS3's graphics processor] to draw your pixels on the screen, then you use the Cell to do gameplay and animations—we kind of took the step of using the Cell process to help the RSX . All those things are done on the Cell processor. It really helps us getting that quality of lighting per pixel; the amount of computation is pretty crazy."
And because Naughty Dog is a first-party developer and only designs games for PlayStation hardware, Balestra said they've "invested a lot of time in maximizing the power of the machine. That's our job, to make the PS3 shine." Well, shine it will once Uncharted 2 is in the disc drive. Anybody have any doubts now ?

bravo!
Xbox 360 games can hardly run on that faulty machine. Uncharted 2 is gonna rule!
the 360 might catch fire and burn your house down if it tried to run uncharted lol lol.
those are the kind of news Im talking about!
What? Someone thought Uncharted could be ran on the 360? lol
I have a feeling that Final Fantasy will be 25 gigs too and Square Enix tries to pack that into 3 dvds. I wonder how Uncharted on Xbox looks on a watered down version. I think it's possible, just wont look as amazing.
I guess as it stands it wouldn't be possible, but seriously, you don't want to hurt the xbox users feelings that way, they'll just say things like well Gears looks better, and CoD rules!!!! (Even though I like me some CoD)
Well duh!
And this is why I'm done spending $60 a pop on multiplatform games. Uncharted 2 will be well worth my $60 investment. Multiplatform games are just watered down Xbox games as far as I'm concerned. The only multiplatform I'm getting on day one is FFXIII. Most multiplatforms are just Xbox ports anyway. Can't justify spending $60 bucks on a ported game.
You have to admit batman: Arkham Asylum looks pretty badass…and the PS3 even gets the Joker as exclusive…
It looks decent. The texture res seems lower then Id like to see and tends to looks plasticy. Like greased up platic(common in xbox games) The screen tearing is annoying too. Gives me a head ache.
I know what you mean about the plastic look. Kind of strange but it almost fits I suppose since it is based on a comic. I think the big appeal for the game is the story(maybe) and the gameplay. I only played the demo and I liked what I got of the story and the gameplay was fantastic.
It's strange. Gears is greasy looking too. I wonder if it has something to do with the dev kit need to build on the Xbox. Maybe not though because not all multiplats looks like that. It doesn't ruin the game at all though. It's fun and the story is good. I'm happy they brought back Mark Hamill and that other guy from the cartoon. Loved that cartoon.
True Jawknee, I know what your saying. Their faces and textures look rough, and yes Gears 2 also had that look. As opposed to other games like Uncharted,MGS4 which have fine smooth textures.
I tried the Batman AA demo, I've watched reviews but I still don't like. Here's hoping I get my hands on DiRT 2. The graphics is bad-ass, the gritty sand, realistic water, fully-detailed cockpits and nice damages makes it look very attractive.
it looks greasy because of the dumb Unreal Engine 3
no. There's more gaming news sites out there than Joystiq.
Welcome to PSXE.
Most sites have similar articles every day because most sites report the news.
…that's just logic talking.
is iBazookaJoe associated with being a dumbass in any way because he sure acts like a pro…
I'm sorry, your articles are well written in a different and more enjoyable style to Joystiq – but it does seem that as soon as an article goes live on their site, I come on here 20mins later and it's the exact same article but a different headline… And I've never been in a situation vice-versa.
@Bazooka: I suppose you could always come here first?
There's only so much game news every single day though, I'm just happy there IS gaming news every day. Movie and music news updates once every few months usually.
Naughty Dog have always been some of the best devs ever!
Loved how they pushed the ps1 with the Crash series
ps2 with Jak and Daxter
and now ps3 with Uncharted
If I'd ever want to work with a game company, it would no doubt be them!
you also got to love how the games they make keep moving to more mature audiances
@BTN: Heck yeah. They know the average gamer is growing up it seems.
Meh
I actually don't like that
shoot shoot, run run gets boring
I really want more games like Mario 64, Crash, Jak and Daxter
The great platformer genre needs to return!
Thank god we still have Ratchet and Clank, fun fun fun
More crash bandicoot i say, ols school style like crash bandicoot 3. Utterly Amazing.
Well you should see the hostility and negativity the Xbots are exhibiting on Eurogamer plus that exclusive play as Joker for Batman Arkham Asylum is driving them peanuts.
I'm glad Uncharted 2 used the whole 25GB space and Naughty Dog want the best possible outta the PS3.
Though blue ray discs were 50gb?
I think the double sided ones are…but I'm not positive…
@jawknee
Like pearljamer said, 50gb blu ray discs are dual layers. So if Naughty Dog only need the 25gb disc then it should be better.
I think most of our games are on the 25GB blu rays except MGS4 needed the double layer 50GB.
Holy crap! I knew this game is going to rock but must they build my hype even more?! Pushing the PS3 to it's limits(finally) will result in some seriously epic gaming action.
Nice.
This is what Cell is for. The memory architecture of the PS3 which features the RSX as a memory controller as well as GPU is set up to allow the Cell to shoulder some of the load with graphics.
The array of SPEs on the Cell is something that the 360's CPU cannot match, so in that sense Naughty Dog is correct, the 360 cannot handle this. This is also a perfect example of how the correct approach to maximize a game on the PS3 is not the same as the correct approach for the 360. Which is why multi-platform games that are built first on one platform, often do not suit the other.
Nicely said
my thoughts exactly, I mean some devs like SE will say "Oh we maxed the PS3" but unless you are using the cell to maximize graphical capabilites that would otherwise hit a brick wall on the RSX then that claim is incorrect. As far as I know, few games do this properly if at all.
lovely, simply lovely
Cue the fanboy comments…
Nice Avataar im from Liverpool 🙂
They're using up the full 25gb? Wow that's strange, Capcom can make a full multiplayer mode for RE5 with only 351k.
That's because it was just a key to unlock data already on the disc we bought. Capcom is taking pointers from M$.
I think Alien was being sarcastic
Aaahh, i see now. Ha!
@ Jawknee – I believe they're still denying that… too funny.
I can't even imagine what a 50gig Uncharted game would look like. *Brain explodes from thought of thought*
I honestly can't imagine how a game could look better than Uncharted. If Uncharted 2 simply matches its predecessors graphics but without the screen tearing, I'll be very happy.
Aaaaaah yes. I forgot about the screen tearing in the 1st one. Blagh! I remember Naughty Dog joking about it and promised that wouldnt be an issue in future titles.
Yes because the tearing in Uncharted was just completely intolerable…Such an overwhelming problem, with that otherwise stellar game, that I never notice it.
I think that we, as gamers, have become way too picky. The kind of flaws seen in games like Uncharted are insignificant, and yet every time there is a new game some wannabe reviewer trying to make a name will complain bitterly about these graphical glitches.
It's like complaining about games that only run at 30 frames per second. It wasn't so long ago that console gamers were content with 30 frames per second at best.
we're too demanding and fickle. An otherwise excellent game could be damned by some minor graphical glitch that becomes a catalyst for criticism. A healthy dose of perspective might help.

Gotta agree with the Lander of Highness, gamers can get pretty picky these days. I don't even noticed stuff like that much because I'm engrossed in the gameplay, plus in the old days we put up with TONS more crap just to play through your average game.
If the screen tearing didn't hurt my eyes I wouldn't mind as much. Games that have tearing give me a head ache. Maybe it doesn't bother others the same way it does me. I can't play a game longer then an hour or so that has tearing. Eyes start to strain.
By the way, I never damned the game. I loved Drakes Fortune. Some just notice things more then others. I never watched a or read review for Uncharted. I went off sheer word of mouth and noticed the tearing all by my self.

I love Uncharted and I think ND made a huge leap with the visuals, so the screen tearing was forgivable. Just saying it'd be nice if the sequel has beauty and performance.
