Yeah, we've all grown tired of the same ol' screenshots and there's only so many times we can watch that uber-impressive CGI trailer from late last year.

But that doesn't mean we're not still psyched for Final Fantasy Versus XIII . As far as anyone knows, it remains exclusive to the PlayStation 3 (unlike FFXIII) and after doing the research, many franchise fans actually say Versus sits higher on their "most-anticipated" list. Well, here's some good news, folks: according to Kotaku , Square-Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase said the dev time for Versus will be "comparatively faster" than that of FFXIII; this statement came hot on the heels of Kitase saying that design time for characters and enemies in FFXIII was down to 1/3 of the time it took at the start of the project. The point is, because several of the same people are working on both titles, and because they're learning a lot with FFXIII, that "knowledge and experience gained" should speed up the Versus creation time. This is really the first update we've had on the game for quite a while, so we consider this to be a good sign.

In case you're wondering, Versus is scheduled for some time in 2011, while we should see FFXIII maybe by the middle of next year. Final Fantasy XIV Online may launch at about the same time, just to keep ya up to speed.

Awesome, I hope all 3 of those games are amazing. I have high hopes for XIV! I don't know enough about Versus to be excited about it at all, I'm just interested. XIII and XIV though, I hope they don't release at the same time or I won't be playing XIII very much.

Thats because Versus is still exclusive. If Vs13 goes multiplat (still likely), we'll be playing Vs13 right b4 the PS4 drops, sadly.

Where's WKC, Demon's Souls, The Agency, DC Universe, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Dragon Age, and Resonance of Fate? These games are coming out soon unlike ANY of the Fabula Nova Crystallis games.

I hope sales for XIII are stronger on the ps3 than they are for xbox. A large enough margin for ps3 could keep versus exclusive.

King James

They should be. But I think they will be even or slightly more 360 copies in the US…More PS3 copies sold in Europe by a healthy margin…And everywhere else the PS3 version will sell 1.5-1

Except in Japan where there will be no Xbox360 version, which I find weird.

Its not that weird given that japan is greatly dominated by sony. the only time xbox 360 gets significant sales is when RPGs are released for it. But since there are definitely more ps3s than 360s in japan, theres no sense in releasing it on 360. As for remaining exclusive, I'm starting to doubt it. Square enix doesnt show any console loyalty this generation. They even said that XIV is a console exclusive for now because xbox live was limiting them but if they could get an agreement, it could go multiplatform. I would just say just get vs XIII for whatever platform you want because theres no doubt in my mind we will have the same "360 is gonna hold back the ps3" arguements that we are having with XIII. However, i still would want it to be exclusive so that devs can make the most of it.

King James

@kevadu
Yes it is jumping the gun. But I bet you VC3 will come out b4 Vs13, esp. if it goes multi-plat.

@johnld
I do find it weird. I agree that the 360 is low in Japan. But here you have a company that preaches simultaneous releases. They're currently making the 360 version now and then localizing it for the respective reasons. And another company that is trying to compete on a global scale with its competitors (Ninty and Sony). Sounds like FF13 is a great way to start for both M$ and S-E.

It wouldn't be hard. The Jap 360 version will be done 1st, right? Because they have to translate it later So why not release it multiplat in Japan, as well? S-E wants to start releasing games worldwide simultaneously across all platforms, right? Why not?

I know M$ wouldn't mind. It would move some 360s in Japan and I know M$ knows this. I'm just surprised M$ and S-E didn't make it happen.

No one in Japan would BUY a 360 for FFXIII. It won't happen as long as it is on the PS3 too.

@ King James (2nd post)

I'm pretty sure the translation of XIII is done already, because I think S-E just said that the English voice-over recording is done. They still need to do all the lip-sync, though.

As for PS3 exclusivity, I'm sure Sony cut some sort of deal to keep it exclusive in Japan, because it WILL sell systems there.

And S-E preaches whatever bit of spin their behind-the-scenes deals require them to preach.

@Charger
Yes, there is no Jap 360 version being release in The Land of the Rising Sun.

@Orvis
That's a nice hyperbole there. But the cheap bastards are everywhere no matter what nationality. And if I only had $200 to spend on games….I would buy a used 360 and ff13.

@fane
Thats what I was referring to. The lip-syncing wouldn't have to be done. Just compress, print, box, and ship.
You may have a point there with Sony cutting a deal with S-E, but I'm reminded of Sony's "Never buy a 3rd party exclusive" policy (unless that policy doesn't apply to Japan).
And I think that S-E is just preaching what the other Jap publishers know. Times have changed. And Japanese games no longer lead the market. That eventually they are going to have to cut down on localization times and release Japanese games faster in other regions. Otherwise, foreign (domestic to you and me) devs will drop a game that will trump a Jap devs' game, i.e. WoW or Fallout 3 or Star Wars: The Old Republic.

@KingJames,

I'd be interested to know the break down, but I'd be willing to bet the majority of Japanese 360s sold are to westerners in Japan and western importers.

Look at any major release, like RE5 or SFIV, in Japan and the majority of the sales are on the PS3 not the 360. Even sales for 360 exlusives like the recent Star Ocean are anemic compared to what the sales would be on the PS3 or Wii.

Vs is Nomura's current baby and word has it he fought pretty hard for it to remain exclusive(to the point of threatening to walk iof some stories are to be believed!)so if SE now wanted to take that game multi platform there wouldn't half be arguments-and not just in the forums between fans and fanboys!

I know FF13 still looks great but I don't, for one second, buy that it wouldn't have looked and played better as an exclusive(on PS3 esp but on either really)and with Vs still able to milk the PS3 properly and it's more interesting(to me) gameplay and artstyle(not to mention Nomura being in charge)means it's been the one I've been craving more for a while now.

With no 360 version to port it could be out in Japan just before Xmas 2010 and in the west the spring after with some luck and I do not expect a PS4 before 2012 to be frank so plenty of time for Vs and maybe KH3 too!

FF13 will def sell better on the PS3 as well with Japan being PS3 only and accounting for around half the sales. I'd imagine, even with the 360's lead in the US that PS3 sales of FF13 would still, at worst be neck and neck and in Europe it won't even be a contest as most PS3 gamers in the EU are FF fans and 360 owners not so much as many older adopters gopt their systems while FF13 was still exclusive and those with noth will go for the one with fewer discs and less chance of damaging them, no?

All of which will ensure that FF13Vs will stay exclusive, imo, and the Tales… sales for PS3 in both the US/EU and Japan will be very telling too after what it sold on the 360!

given the great titles left in 09 and the numerous ones coming in 2010, I'm ok if they push it to 2011 but they need to show us more stuff about it (videos/photos/gameplay). If it can make 2010 then great, otherwise 2011 will look good…maybe add in the Rockstar project "Agent" and a "Resistance 3"? lol

I'm confused on the order of the release dates. FXIII versus is faster, and they said they were working on FXIII versus and FXIII around the same time. That means it's almost done. At E3 09 they say FFXIV will release next year. So they can't release the XIV and versus XIII before XIII. Is xbox version really delaying all these games?

BTW I'm still surprised that the Xbox FFXIII is in 3 dvds. Does it mean its being compressed for both versions? They did say both will look identical.

Andysw
Andysw

Yes, the game is being compressed in order to minimalise the number of dvds needed to contain the xbox 360 version of the game. And yes, both versions will look similiar, if not the same.

I dont think they will have a problem releasing XIV after XIII and XIIIvs last. XIV can come after XIII because that makes sense, and it can come before XIIIvs because it is an MMO and not a full storied entry.

S-E reported at GC that FF13 Xbox360 version is 70% complete and is projected to fit on 3 discs.

So to answer your question, YES! The 360 is slowing down the dev time. The PS3 version is mostly done and S-E is just having trouble compressing the game onto DVDs. Hence, no release in Japan.

My main concern is that Final Fantasy has always been master of beautiful flawless cutscenes. Why would it fit in 3 dvds? I believe Lost Odyssey was 4 dvds right? It felt like it's inferior just judging by the size of the game.

Anyone that owned the FFXIII demo can tell me if the game outputs at 1080p or at least the cutscenes? I remember there was a discussion, but not here to see the conclusion.

Versus is *not* almost done. It's barely even started. Note that many of the same people are working on XIII and vsXIII, and right now guess which one they're spending all their time on?

Saying the Xbox version is delaying them is premature, though, as the porting team *is* separate. That's a purely technical issue that has nothing to do with the design aspects of the games.

And yes, both versions of XIII are compressed. Everything is compressed. If games weren't compressed they would take up many hundreds of gigabytes, maybe even terabytes. I don't think you realize how widespread compression is, or how little good compression affects quality.

Jawknee
Jawknee
13 years ago

Much of MGS4 wasn't compressed. The audio especially.

To the guy who asked about the output of the demo, I'm pretty sure it was only 720p. Once again the Xbox hinders the PS3 version. I hate the xbox. All our multiplat games turn out mediocre and half assed to accomidate for the 360's short comings. They rarely support 1080p. Unlike most PS3 exclusives. Killzone 2 can support 1080p, MSG4's default output is 1080p. If this game doesn't support 1080 I'm going to be very disappointed. I bought the true HD console to play true HD games. Not half assed upscaled games.

Anyone know what the display res is for Batman: AA?

Last time I checked none of those were delayed. FF XIII did go from PS3 only this year to being multiplat and releasing next spring, but VS never had a release date and XIV was recently announced and actually coming faster than anyone would have expected. I my self can't wait for XIII but I am definitely more excited for VS. I'm not a big MMO person so I won't be playing XIV but it will definitely sell some systems if it stays exclusive. Ppl love some FF and u mix it with MMO and Cha Ching! Money in the bank. I know ppl who have had FF Online since it first launched on PS2 and CPU. I'm sure they sold plenty more when it became avail for 360 just because of how great the online community is on Live compared to what PS2 tried to do. Hell I know ppl who play it alot still….. *cough* Cat *cough* da Felix.

this is exactly why you dont go and announce your games years before they will be ready.
FFXIII wont hit outside JP till may at the earliest.
FFXIV is supose to come out before V 13.
pardon my roman numerals, but i thought XIII came before XIV?
why are they releasing 14 before V 13, i thought 13 comes before 14.
hell SE while your at it, why not announce kingdom hearts 3,4,5 and 6.
we all know there coming, might as well knock the head of the rabbit while its still running.

Just found out from another source that tgc won't show any new images of the game. That also includes agito and parasite eve. I'm disappointed with square enix this year. Not only have they left the playstation userbase out in the cold by making final fantasy XIII multiplatform, but they lied about the playstation 3 version won't be compromised by the xbox 360 version and refrained themselves from releasing any information or footages of versus and agito.

I'm getting a little impatient and starting to wonder whether final fantasy XIII will be worth picking up or not.

Nomura's so called "suprise" better not be xbox 360 related. If square enix wanted to make up for the long wait and delay that we've suffered.

The more I read about this game the more it reminds me of the pc adventure game Blade Runner. This was a game which boasted having multiple story versions depending on which action/choice you made. I loved Blade Runner, both the movie and the game and I must admit I have not been interested in any adventure type games until now. With Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain… I may have to crack open the dusty wallet.

i still dont understand why many people saying FF13 xbox 360 is delaying the PS3.

SQEX already stated long time ago that SQEX will start working on the Xbox 360 version after the Japanese version finished.

and if i remember correctly, SQEX say that CrystalTools is multiplatform-capable. So the PS3 FF13 can be compiled to Xbox 360 version fairly easy. SQEX just need to optimize it. no need for messing around the engine again.

also if i remember correcly, usually after Final Fantasy released on JAP, the English version will take 6-12month to be released. and the Europe version will be released another 6-12month AFTER the US version released.

but with the Final Fantasy 13, SQEX say that JAP will get on end of 2009. And the US on early 2010.

so i think FF13 US release is faster than what FF usually take 6-12month for the US release after JAP.

and verry sory for my bad english. english is not my mothertounge.

They said that yes, but they also said recently that the xbox 360 version is 70% complete and the japanese version is 90% complete. Not only does this not make sense, but also makes them hypocrits. Because how can the xbox 360 version be 70% complete when they clearly stated before that "work on the xbox 360 version won't begin until the japanese version is done"? The japanese version is hardly finished and they've already started work on the xbox 360 version?

Square has given people nothing but disappointment. Like how they lied about final fantasy XIII not being on any other platform but the playstation 3 and shock the gaming community by announcing the game will also be on the xbox 360 at microsoft's e3 2008. If they thought by doing this would cause a positive ripple effect amongst the gaming community, they're wrong.

Just hope that final fantasy versus XIII WILL remain a playstation 3 exclusive.
