Well, the majority of gamers have responded quite favorably to the PS3 Slim and price drop announcement. But let's not forget that developers and industry insiders are also quite excited.

With the default PS3 model dropping $100 to only $299, it has now become a force to be reckoned with; factor in Blu-Ray, the free (and constantly expanding Network), undeniably fantastic exclusives, and a far superior reliability rating, and consumers are lovin' it. And what are devs saying? Well, Examiner.com rounded up a sampling of "Tweets" from various big names in the industry, and they're all plenty excited; positive responses abound:

Dylan Jobe, President of LightBox Interactive: "Glad to see the PS3 price cut was announced today. I must admit I was suprised to see a 120GB HDD included. I was expecting only an 80GB!"

David Jaffe, Founder of Eat Sleep Play: "Thrilled RE Sony's announcements. LOVE the PS3 is gonna get into more hands and think PSPGO MINIS look sweet! Wanna make one!"

Sucker Punch Productions: "Big news today of PS3 $100 price drop and a slim version. Perfect time to tell your friends to buy PS3 and inFAMOUS and still save $50 :)"

It's no surprise to see such an overwhelmingly positive response from developers; a significantly lower price means more hardware sales, which of course translates to more software sales (or at least, the potential for more software sales). And for our part, we can finally – finally – leave behind the complaints that the PS3 is too expensive. We've been suffering from those since the thing launched nearly three years ago. Good riddance . 🙂

Valve made a great game called Half-Life for the PC over 10 years ago now. Since then it's been pretty run-of-the-mill stuff, such as the mostly "multi-player" Left 4 Dead (which in 360 land means $50 a year to play). When they announced Left 4 Dead 2 so soon after the first, their supposed Xbot fans wanted to crucify them. What does that say about how important of a game developer they are?

I don't think Valve gives two spits about Xbox. They primarily develop for the PC and the online goodness there is free. Good on them for having made a mint off of L4D, but honestly, they've GOT to get out of the programming stone age.

I was just thinking the same thing, but price was never an issue for Valve. They were just too lazy to try something different. Bah humbug, we don't need em!

I'm glad to see it. I personally am going to sell my 60gb that I got on launch day for a slim. The 60gb just puts out too much heat for my room and I don't care about b/c or installing another OS. Plus, double the hard drive space is always a good thing 🙂 Although, I am gonna miss my trusty old 60gb a little bit….

You're nuts if you do it…what about memory card slots too…

If it ain't broken don't fix it…

If your PS3 still works, then why would you sell it…

Do it before it breaks on you. Go for the slim

ThePearlJamer

also, you can always swap it for a 500 gig hard drive, essentially the original was the best model in my opinion and if mine ever broke, I would pay to have it fixed before getting a slim, nothing against sony hardware though…

Except the older models have bigger units, which makes it hotter, which is why they YOLD, mine was a 80gb unit and it finally ylod'd and I'm going to get a slim and use it until I repair my 80gb one. The only thing you lose from going from the 60gb to the new slim is: 2 usb ports (which for me is a big thing, I use all 4 on my 80gb), B/C, touch sensitive buttons, and well that's it. With the Slim you'll have a cooler, quieter machine, with less power usage, and it'll run just the same.

Only thing I wish is that they put a blu-ray drive with a faster read speed, that would kill loading times..

YesterdysRising
YesterdysRising

Well, I have never ever once used the memory card slots and I have used the 4 usb slots when playing Guitar Hero but I realized the instrument receivers have their own usb slots on the bottom so I just connect them all together and only use one slot 🙂 So really, there's nothing that I would be losing that matters to me other than the fact that it's my PS3 that I've had since launch, you know, a sentimental thing….

I wouldn't even think of getting rid of it, but it's just so hot and I know I can have some pretty intense gaming sessions but it's like a space heater that I don't need in Arizona, haha.

Yes, I know it's not broken but I'm sure I can sell it online and probably break even. Plus, the 60gb is 90nm and the slim is now 45nm. That will save so much power and greatly reduce the heat.

@LegendaryWolfeh

IIRC, the most common component failure in the PS3 is the BluRay drive, and the laser within it. Heat production is a practical issue with the PS3 since it can pump out a fair amount of energy, but it's not a big issue with regard to system failure. A lot of supposed "system failures" have turned out to be hard disc related. The so-called YLOD is a general condition and does not simply mean that the system has overheated.

The PS3 is very well designed with regard to protection against heat related damage. It uses a well designed and over-engineered HSF to take heat away from the Cell and RSX. If the HSF for some reason is unable to remove all the heat, the system is built to monitor itself and will shutdown to prevent thermal damage.

I have had one system fail, it was a refurb that was clearly dropped during shipping and failed within 24 hours of me receiving it. There was no physical damage externally, but the GPU flaked out within 24 hours. With the PS3 you have to be very careful about how you characterize a 'system failure'. More often than not the failure in a PS3 is a peripheral failure, not a failure of a component on the motherboard.

TheHighlander

Oh yes, he's right, the Xbox360 is far better value.

😉

No, really, I mean, really! Look!!

For only $199 I can get a hard-diskless game console that even plays DVDs! It's fantastic! If I want to play online it's only another $50, and if I have a wireless router it's only another $100 for wireless networking. If I need a hard disk (Ha! Who needs one of those!?) a mere $150 will get me a 120GB drive to match that PS3. Oh, and it's only $20 for that nice play and charge kit. Of course the HD-DVD drive is defunct now, but I can always get an el-cheapo BD player for $200. See, it's so cheap, I can get into this for only $199, and I have all these options! It's wonderful.

Now, of course if you add up everything except that BluRay player (after all who really needs BluRay, upscaling is great stuff you know, BluRay is such a hoax). If you add up all the gaming stuff it's only $519.99. I guess I could have invested in a Pro for $299 or an Elite at $399, but they're just so over done, I mean who needs all the extra features like…um….a hard disk?

No, that PS3 at $299, what's it got that's so great? A hard disk…well, OK it has that. Wireless controller…oh, yeah it has that. What about wireless networ….ah, yeah, I see that too. Well I bet it doesn't have BluRa…oh yeah, I forgot about that. Hmmm….does it come with a PSN Gold subscrip…oops, I forgot, there's no subscription charge for PSN. Well, I bet that it doesn't even come with…um…uh…an HDMI cable! Yeah, that's it! The blasted thing doesn't even come with an HDMI cable. Sony is SO cheap!

</sarcasm>

There is nothing Elite about the damn 360 Elite

I mean doesn't Elite imply that it would have some special or decent features (Elite)

like a solid hardware
or (back then) a HD-Drive
or Wireless Lan
or a second controller
or any othenr features to justify the term "ELITE"

I think when the Elite first came out, it was justified by it's outrageous price…a lot of money for a piece of crap…

i totally aggree with highlander, i mean, who doesnt? or rather, who cant!? xbox is such a f*cking rip off! microsoft = daylight robbery. they have you pay for just about everyhting, yeah, so you get a free wireless… oh sorry, did i just say wireless? i apoligise, wired (which is so out dated now) headset and a freaking HDMI cable, so you could end up paying an extra £200-£300 on things that dont come with the xbox excluding games, so now it could come up to £500 for just 5 games and extra's and then theres live and microsoft points, if you pay for live for say, 5 years, you are then paying an extra £250 so theres already £750 then MS points… £100.. taking it too £850, then there is the console which is £250 i think, so theres £1050 on a crappy console and extra's worth jack, where as with the PS3 the max it will come up to is probebley around £500-£600 including the average extras and HDMI cable and the console, which is between less than and just over half of what you would pay for the sh*tbox 360… and most or all of the ps3 games now cost the same as the xbox's… thank you very much for sharing my views and respecting my opinion <caugh, caugh. facts> everybody!

TheHighlander

Ben, it's better than just leaving the complaints of being too expensive behind. Now the 360 is actually more expensive than the PS3 in a way that even the most arithmetically challenged low information consumer can see. Competition now should be based more on the games and features than on supposed price.

I think we all know who's line up of games is superior for the near and medium term, and which console stacks more features inside the case.

Now things should get interesting.
