We've done everything we could to fully reveal the new PS3 Slim, but as always, there were a few lingering questions. Well, Sony has already answered them for you.

ArsTechnica spoke to Sony's John Koller and clarified a few important facts that many gamers have been eager to learn; such topics include the state of the current PS3 model, backwards compatibility for PS2 software and why we'll no longer be able to use different Operating Systems. So here we go:

On model availability and pricing

Retailers will continue to get rid of their current stock of 80GB PS3s and once they're gone, they're gone for good; the PS3 Slim "will be the hardware moving forward." As for the 160GB model, it was always supposed to be a limited-time deal, so if you want to snag it now that it features a more attractive $399 price tag, you had best take advantage. As for pricing, as of now , the 80GB PS3 should be reduced to $299, and to reaffirm, the PS3 Slim will also debut at that price on September 1 in North America and Europe (299 Euros in Europe).

On the new hard drive

The PS3 Slim boasts a larger 120GB hard drive and according to Koller, you can indeed replace it with a bigger one if you wish, and furthermore, this will not void your warranty. In fact, it's actually encouraged; the hard drive is accessible in the front of the system and changing it is merely a "two-screw process."

On the new redesigned interior

The PS3 Slim has a new power cable that uses about 1/3 less power, and with the decreased power consumption, the cooling system has also been redesigned and the Cell processor is down to a 45nm process from the previous 65nm. The new slimmer console will be lighter and quieter and will still have all the same capabilities and features of the older, fatter model. Koller also said the system will have a power brick, but it'll be small; it'll be "nothing like" the one that comes with the Xbox 360.

On disallowing other Operating Systems

The new PS3 won't let you install a new OS and Koller explained it simply- "There are a couple of reasons. We felt we wanted to move forward with the OS we have now. If anyone wants to use previous models and change the OS, they can do so. We wanted to standardize our OS."

On backwards compatibility

In what may be the most disappointing news for long-time PS2 fans, Koller firmly said full b/c for PS2 software won't be coming back. After saying clearly that it won't be returning, he added- "It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing. We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies." We know a lot of you out there still wanted to see b/c return, and rumors had hinted that it might come with a new firmware update in the future, but that rumor has been officially shot down.

'whew' Okay, that should just about do it. There can't be anything else you need to know, can there?

So you can say you wouldn't want to play SOTC or GOW 1&2 again? Or other great games that aren't playable on the PS3? Sorry but the ps3 doesn't have every greatest game in the world.

There are still many great PS3 games I missed out on, I have some I have yet to play. I have a PS2 slim but would prefer if I had just the PS3 with b/c rather than have a PS3 and PS2 on the unit.

What about using your older hdd thats in your fatter PS3 and putting it in the slim? Will it need to be formatted, I'd hate to lose everything, allot of its recorded with the tv play that we have in he UK.

I have an original 60gb PS3, so not having B/C doesn't affect me.

me too and i see it as vital.

I missed out on a lot of great games last gen and i continue to catch up to this day.

Right now, as im a Level 5 fanatic, im going through Rogue Galaxy as thats the only Level 5 game i missed and obviously, its on ps2 so, the B/C on the 60 is vital to me.

What if Rogue Galaxy 2 is announced for PS3 (which i see happening)? I would of been half screwed (as i ain't hooking an old ps2 up to a hd tv!).

Well, according to Sony, you are in the minority. There are too many great new games to play to worry about the old ones.

i watched an unboxing on you tube and there is NO powerbrick

That was my understanding, besides, the new system isn't *that* much smaller.

The power supply in the PS3 Slim is an internal one. If Koller is this mis-informed about his most recent product, you'll have to excuse me if I doubt anything the man says about Backwards compatibility.

Oh, here's a close-up of the rear end of a PS3 Slim, note the 2 prong power cord socket….the PSU is internal.

http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-slim-unboxing/2217799/

And as you can see from this second image, the box clearly lists only an AC power cord, and no external supply. If you look through the rest of the gallery, you'll see this confirmed in other images.

I do believe that B/C is more important to consumers than Sony wish to believe. There are over a hundred million ps2 users out there, and to be able to play your old games on your new platform is essential for a lot of those people. Especially when the new platform offers upscaling for the old games. To not include B/C in a future update is a bad move for Sony. It also seems like such a simple thing to do in order to make people happy.

Lucky me that I have the 60gig machine though 🙂

CH1N00K

I kind of figured we might see this. Most of the people that are crying for B/C are the early adopters, who own multiple systems, (Including the PS2) With the PS2 at 99 dollars now, Sony doesn't see the need to push B/C. The people that are going to be buying the new lower priced PS3 Slim for the most part won't care about B/C. They've got their hands full with a great PS3 library to catch up on. It's sad to see that it won't be happening. I was hoping for a firmware update that would improve the B/C of my 80 gig, but I've already got a B/C PS3. And to be honest, for the amount I play my PS2 games on it….I can shell out 99 bucks for a PS2 if it ever dies.

you know for some people 99 dollar are a lot those ones perhaps are the same that wanted to wait for the price drop because they dont have enough money duh!.

also Ps2 looks horrible on HDTV .

Don't ever hook up a PS2 to a 73" HDTV unless you want a headache. Or a flashback. Ha ha.

Yeah, I bet Sony is wrong about B/C. I'm sure all of their professional highly paid marketing researchers just don't have a clue…[/sarcasm]

CH1N00K
CH1N00K

Oxvial, if people had really wanted to play their PS2 games on a system, most would have (not all) bought a PS2 when it went to $99 or they already own one. Even though most people on this web site are still crying for B/C, you have to remember that we aren't the majority that are going to buy a PS3 after a price drop. Most of us already have a ps3, and quite a few of those are b/c already. And if you are crying for B/C then that means chances are you already own a PS2 and PS1.

The new PS3 is going to be sold to a majority of people who wanted to get the system but felt that the price was to high to pay for "just a video game console" These are the general masses that don't check websites for gaming details, they don't care whether FFVII ever gets remade. They are the people that bought the Wii. They aren't hardcore gamers, they're casual. Most of them won't even know that the PS3 Slim is coming until they see it in the stores and go "whoa!" it's cheaper and skinnier.

For the 23 million PS3's that are out there now, the % amount of those users who are actually crying for B/C is not that big. Sony knows this. The next group of people that are going to rush out and buy the Slim are going to make that number even smaller. The nintendo and the 360 didn't include B/C in their new systems, and they outsold the PS3. Once the "late adopters" see the graphics of the new PS3, there is going to be a few that want to play b/c, but the majority won't really care.

We may see an update eventually from sony that includes B/C, but Sony is going to be focusing on getting back into the number one spot for consoles. That means looking onwards and upwards, not backwards. Eventually, I'm sure you'll be able to download thousands of popular PS1 and PS2 sales on the PSN, to play on your PS3 or PSP GO. That is the B/C that they are heading for.

If you really want to play them from disc format..well the PS2 is only the cost of 2 new games. Which over a year of what most people spend on a console…it isn't really all that much.

@Jed,

I suspect that it's Koller with the mis-understanding…

Here's the actual quote from the Ars Technica article.
<<
He also told us that there will be a power brick, although we can expect it to be small. He laughs when I ask about the power brick's size in relation to the 360's power supply. "It's nothing like that," he assured Ars.
>>

It's pretty clear that they are referring to an external power supply, not an internal one. This is clearly not the case. Perhaps Koller was simply not well briefed. However if he's not well briefed about that, why should we suppose that everything else he said was accurate?

Sony's just patenting emotion emulation for fun then. Yeah right. The announcements are over for now. Don't expect Sony to confirm BC just because we're asking.

I hope you're right about BC-I really don't want to have to buy another ps2 (my old one died).

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

The only thing that will stop Sony from releasing software based PS2 compatibility for the PS3 (when the PS2 is discontinued) is if it is literally impossible to make the emulator run fast enough to emulate the PS2 properly. If that turns out to be the case, then I expect we'll have to wait for the PS4 for PS2 compatibility through software.

But I still think it's coming to the PS3 in due course, but we won't hear it from Sony until it's definitely ready to go.

I sent him an email and this auto-reply was generated.
"Thank you for your email but I am unavailable at this time. We are currently hard at work, raising the prices of our premium game lines, such as Guitar Hero, to help counteract the PS3 price drops. Thank you for your money and your patronage through these times."

I kind of agree with you on that one Oxvial. I can't stand talking to most people that I run into in an online game..lol, let alone talking to someone else who's in another one. I can see how it could be important to some people, but usually if I'm online and a friend is, we send a message to each other and then hop into the same game together and play a few rounds.
