Sony's Kaz Hirai is our best friend in the whole world right now, because he has just stepped to the GamesCom stage and announced the PS3 Slim . Oh, it's a pretty little machine; he's holding it in his arms right now (for live pics, visit the live blog at VG247 ), and the specs are what PSXE and many others predicted: it will feature a 120GB hard drive, it will be 32% smaller, 36% lighter, have 34% less power consumption and, oh yes, it will only cost $299 in the US and 299 Euros in Europe . And what else does this mean? This means the current 80GB PS3 will receive a big ol' price drop starting today, and the PS3 Slim will be rarin' to go on store shelves in the first week of September! Hirai says it will vary a bit by country, but that's the estimated launch period. The biggest news of the day by a long shot and although we didn't get the announcement of a Gran Turismo 5 launch date, we assume that will come at the Tokyo Game Show next month.
And that's that. Sony's press conference is over and we have the super huge announcement we've all been waiting for. Anyone else wanna celebrate?

Looks good, but looks cheaper than the glorious current big brother. I would of liked it to be piano black, gathers dust I know but its reason for giving it a good rubbing.
Do I get one, well I have an excuse now, as I can give my current PS3 to my brother.
Price? They never seem to give a UK price anymore, I've seen it for pre-order for £250, available sep 4th. The conversion for US $299 to UK is £183. So in the US you are getting it very cheap. I think we in the UK should be paying £200, its only fair?
Kinda put me off getting it now seeing that conversion rate.
I recall someone saying it was impossible because of the new font.

damn from the pics over at engadget it doesn't look like you can replace the HD
Actually they did you can't install a different OS on the slim.
Limited: That would be a firmware function, not a hardware capability. This would also screw over people selling PS3 Linux clusters. Are you just saying this or was this part of the announcement?
they got rid of the touch sensitive buttons? sure it's not a big thing but it makes it feel a little last gen to me .__.

Don't worry, the "screw port" is now on the bottom of the machine and the HDD slides out of the front of the PS3.

The firmware on the "slim" apparently doesn't contain the option to Install Other OS. I guess the farmers will have to stock up on current PS3s.

I'm happy with the price drop now the user base would catch fast the 360 one so not put titles like Splinter Cell on the ps3 and ignore that big user base would be stupid .
but I'm really sad no BC =( so I must buy another PS2 and a old TV to play my dusted ps2 games.

I agree that those are needed, but people will never shut up. There is nothing to satisfy people, unless Sony was giving them money. be glad we even got a price cut.
People were supposed to shut up when they got In-Game XMB.
It'll be Party systems or some other thing if Cross Chat comes.
Personally, I don't see the point of Cross Chat, though I'll probably use it at some point if it comes.

great news but sony still don't know how to count! 299euros is about $422… still will be picking up my new slimmer model very soon!!!!
European prices tend to include taxes already (and the taxes are higher).
Still not sure that makes the whole difference, but it certainly mitigates part of it.
europe and UK get treated like crap so im not entirely suprised

This is great news for my cheap friends.
I think retailers will have to drop the price of the phat an additional $50 to get them moving–
Theres no real reason to get one if its the same price as a shiny new 120gb slim.
You can still pick up a Phat PS3 that will come bundled with games. Also, you can upgrade the Phat's hard drive…..not sure about that with the Slim. The Phats will fly off the shelves, no problem.

oh god i just saw the ps3 slim in the flesh. UGLY A** MUTHA F*****! the fisrt gen ps3 looked so beautiful, so shmexy. the new ones look like a cheap knockoff.
Well one good thing its that the people that care about the console look are going to buy the 80 giger like hot cakes!

i actually think it looks amazing…
ps1 to psone = same overall shape, smaller size
ps2 to ps2 slim to ps2 slimmer = same overall shape, smaller size
psp to psp 2000 to psp 3000 (minus GO!) = same overall shape, smaller size
ps3 to ps3 slim = same overall shape, smaller size
so IMO mission accomplished for Sony… I've been saying it since day 1, ps3 slim and "Boomerang" controller look absolutely awesome…

There's something about that curved bit next to the disk drive that just looks wrong to me. Also, the buttons look cheap.
It just looks cheap compared to the gorgeous original. Still, it could have been worse.
oh don't worry i'm still going to get one purely because i'm always traveling with my ps3. still.. going to have to get used to this new look. ehhh i can live with it. 😉

at $300, im buying 1 for my room, moving my old 1 to the basement rec room, and buying 1 for my upstairs sitting room… lan parties will be sick! get a bunch of Sony bravias, line the spare room with them, and plug in everyone's ps3's and turn the AC to MAX!
