So the resentment towards Activision has never been higher, but at the same time, we have to be realistic: a certain vocal minority can scream "boycott!" all they want, but if the vast majority still want to play the products in question, all that resentment matters little.
According to the latest pre-order list for North America, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is sittin' pretty at the top of the pile. With a combined pre-order number of approximately 825,000 units already (easily topping Halo 3: ODST at a little over 600,000), Activision's boasts of having the single biggest video game launch of 2009 may prove to be more realistic rather than overly optimistic and/or cocky. You will also notice Guitar Hero 5 's presence on that list, and we assume Tony Hawk: Ride will fare well, too, so Activision is inevitably in for a big holiday season. However, if you really dislike Activision right now and you still want to play Modern Warfare 2 , just tell yourself you're rewarding the developers – Infinity Ward – because it's a lot easier. You don't want to miss out, do you? And if you're wondering why there are so many more 360 pre-orders for the game, you have to remember that the majority of fans from the original title played it on the 360; the PS3 hadn't yet come into its own in 2007 and the user base gap was extremely wide. But in this case, it's the combined pre-order number that counts, and it's big .
So there's no doubt about it: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will likely be the biggest game of the holiday season. It may not be your favorite – ours will probably be Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
