We politely asked Sony to put an end to the circus and just announce the new PS3 Slim. Well, that didn't happen, which means that we must report on the latest news concerning the remodeled machine.
It's becoming clearer by the day. According to a recent report from the Jeux Video Network , the system in question is an inevitability, and one European retailer responded simply, "Yes, the PS3 Slim is a reality; it will soon emerge." The retailer also said the new console would launch with a retail price of 299 Euros, which supports the popular theory that not only will the PS3 Slim hit store shelves this year, it'll also be cheaper than the current model. That video is worth watching even if you can't understand French, if only for the introductory collection of evidence. For our part, we believe Sony will make everything official at GamesCom on August 18 (the day of their press conference), because at this point, the "unofficial confirmations" are starting to be daily occurrences. Now, considering all this, let's see if we've got this straight-
So the PS3 Slim comes right along with the corresponding price cut. It seems very likely we'll get Gran Turismo 5 for the holidays, and we'll be able to add that to PS3 exclusives like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time , and MAG . Consider the fact that the PSN and PlayStation Home have both made tremendous strides in the past year, and we're starting to wonder…can anyone compete with the PS3 this holiday season?
how many euros does it currently retail at?, isnt 300 euros about 300 dollas which means not a price drop?
300 Euros = 426.18 U.S. dollars
@oxvial
your right about the exchange rate for euro to dollars and you have the right amount, but i remember seeing an article about a week ago that cited a source as saying that the ps3 slim would sell at 299 in both dollars and euros- sorry i didnt leave a hyperlink but i dont feel like looking for it
anyway this would make sense considering that sony is doing the same thing with the psp go–making it only $250 and 250 euro
also US displayed prices don't include tax, EU prices do, I think
Why is the slim coming out only three years after the product launched?
Companies, specially eletronic-based companies like to make everything smaller
Just like cellphones
Computer monitors (thinner)
etc.
But it might also be a way of presenting an existing product as something new.
Because it's less expensive to make and will inject more interest in the product and brand at a time when sales are slow and need to speed up.
The difference is that the ability to shrink the machine has arrived a little earlier this time, but the reasons are all good.
Don't forget that by making something smaller you also decrease the shipping costs which also factors into the overall cost of the product.
I think Alienage is refering to the fact that the Slim version gets released earlier than it's predecessors.
Just like cellphones? What are you talking about? They go through a cycle and right now they are getting larger, yet again because of larger screens and capabilities. Check your local shops.
Alienage, you got thumbs down for asking a question. LOL
@alienange – Because the phat one is an epic fail. Sony needs to fix their mistake.
LOL @ hezzron73 fail
How anyone thinks it's cheaper to hire engineers to reconfigure the board, buy new components, have a sub mold a new plastic case, assemble the console and ship to retail is cheaper than simply saying "hey the stock you have is now 100 cheaper" is beyond me. It takes a lot of money to re-engineer products. Sony could just as easily said "it's costing us 70% less to make so let's pass that on to the customer." Making a whole new model after only three years? Seems a little suspect to me.
@ Hezron – What the hell are you talking about?

No offense Alienage. Even though I do agree with your suspensions about why this "slim" is arriving so early, you so read up a lil on supply chain management.
I was going for the record amount of "thumb downs"…..did I get it?
Seriously, it's no contest. The PS3 is by far the superior machine this generation, but their goal was not just keeping a niche group of educated and sophisticated gamers happy. They are in the money making business as well, and with sales lagging behind their competitors at present, Sony wants to make it more available to the masses. Hence the cheaper PS3 Slim. At the right price, the new PS3 should own!
The answer to your question is no, Ben. No one will be able to compete with the PS3 this holiday season.
dont forget halo 3: odst
Correct, I see more people complaining about the PS3 price rather than the games and the whatnot.
I wish I could forget ODST but it makes me kinda sad. That is most likely going to out sell every game on everything… Wait did I say every game? Silly me! I was meaning to say every game other than GT5.
and MW2?
I feel bad for people who are all hyped up and excited about an add-on.
@Xra897
Why would anyone suppose that a glorified game add-on would somehow compete with a line up of complete AAA titles and a brand new console mode at a (probably) lower price?
Really, ODST? It's just an expansion pack that someone decided to pretty up as a full release so that the release calendar didn't look so anemic.
@ World: It isn't the content they clamor for, it's the name. They suck it up like pups to a teet. No, I'm not a fan of the Halo series. ^^
In that video, they showed that you can stand it up vertically. Just how slim will this be? I get nervous about standing a fat one up, imagine how easily a thinner one would be to tip over.
The ps2 stand was the best…it really protected it from falling.
Though I have ALWAYS preferred my consoles horizontally.
Same here Scarecrow, horizontal for me.
lol, that reminds me of my old poll in the forums, most people DID prefer horizontal.
Yeah, most ppl like it missionary.
Curvaceous Playstation 3 for the win! <3
But yes, again, for those cheap people who missed Valkyria Chronicles, Motorstorm, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, flower, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, etc. this is your chance.
And you're al llucky bastards if it'll come bundled with GT5 later on.
Did you see gphoriea!? (or however it's spelled) how could people vote against some games i doubt they've even played.
G4's community is riddled with xbots. The Xbox won best console over both handhelds, the 3, and even the Wii. And it won with over half of the votes.
You shouldn't read that much into it.
G4 is terrible around every comment I see lies the worst gaming site ever ruined by immature Xbox nuthuggers aged at 23yrs old
ehh, i was excited about the PS3 slim but, a US retail value of about $425 is not that cheap… even if it is a 160GB HD… i was expecting to see it around the $300 mark…
ohh well, i've officially decided to pass on the new slim in favor of upgrading my current hard drive to 250GB for $60… b/c would be nice but, my one and only purchased PS2 still works fine to this day…
Yeah wat a let down sony is doing bad moves this years with the consoles….first no more b/c next Psp Go sucks! and now the Ps3 Slim…isnt cheap =S.

They have already been paying more money for the consoles than us in the states. The price will be reduced for us as well.
Stop.
Just Stop. You're getting pissed off because of a comment making an assumption about a report of a rumor that's unconfirmed.
If the new pS3 slim hits Europe at 299 Euro, I will be very, very surprised if it does not also drop in the US at $299. The USD and Euro have historically been near parity, I don't see that trend changing in the long term, even if right now the Euro is worth more than a USD.
ehh, $60 to upgrade is still cheaper than $299… i guess the price is good for people looking to buy their first PS3… but, for guys like me that have already forked over $400, i don't think i wanna pay $300 for b/c, if that rumor is even true…

ps3 Slim has bc?? that would be great.
I wonder if the slim will be able to change the HDD easy like the ps3 now.
Yes, the HDD is user replaceable, it's supposedly even easier than before.
As for backwards compatibility, unless Sony surprises the world with yet another hardware solution to this, backwards compatibility for PS2 games will be provided through software emulation. Such a software based backwards compatibility solution would work on all PS3s regardless of model – not just the upcoming, new model.
it will be $299 in the US, methinks
QUICK!!! sell your fat ps3s before the general public finds out!
Nope, fat PS3 owners will always have respect 😉
She's my fat princess 🙂
mines a prince….
But i like em a lil' thick, not with eating disorders.
i would never sell my fat ps3 shes my baby 😀 but no in reality fat ps3 owners did earn respect for sticking with sony even tho the 400 to 500 doller cost was godly… in my opinion everyone who owns a fat ps3 should get a reward from sony…a free ps4 is enough for me thank you sony XD
The design is ugly and unattractive. Why on earth did sony choose that design? I'm disappointed in them.

The new design is probably more cost efficient.
