"Where there's smoke there's fire." This isn't always true, especially in the world of online video game journalism, but at this point, there's a wall of smoke and it has to be coming from somewhere .
We've been seeing evidence of the PS3 Slim for months now, and although none of it has been verified and there has been no official word from Sony, just about everyone is convinced that this new machine is inevitable. We've even heard developers and analysts predict its coming so it has gone far beyond some leaked pics of some Malaysian street vendor (or whatever the heck that was). When our boy Jack Tretton took the stage at E3 this year, he quickly made a joke during his introduction; he thanked everyone for coming, considering the fact that the cat was already out of the bag concerning the PSP Go. It's just very difficult to keep something like the PSP Go or PS3 Slim a secret in the land of the Internet, so it's not like we're blaming Sony. And while we're aware that the announcement will very likely come in Cologne at the GamesCom 2009 event in a few weeks time, we'd just rather have the confirmation now. Really, it'll be easier on everyone. We don't have to write any more articles that say, "oh looky, more PS3 Slim info!" and the readers can finally just throw up their hands and go, "FINALLY!"
There comes a point where a rumor starts to lose any real mystery or intrigue, and it just becomes annoying for everyone involved. Again, this isn't anyone's "fault;" it's just the reality of the situation, and we sincerely ask Sony to send out that press release today. Seriously, we wanna see it in our inbox in less than 9 hours. Just do it and we can all move on . Dontcha have some unbelievable software to show off at GamesCom, anyway? Let that steal the limelight; if titles like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , MAG , God of War III , Heavy Rain , and LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo for the PSP aren't capable of doing that, nothing is.
"We have something new to announce today, It has alot of names, one would be the worst kept secret of Gamescom."

well i expect the x360 to fully die with the launch of PS3 slim
good bye MS RROD BOX 360
It was nice knowing thee electric HEAT BOX 360
Xbox 360's final deathblow?! Killzone 2 apparently was but it never happened……so anyway Trey 4 Life
Sigh honestly this wall of smoke comes from the fact that obviously at some point there will be a Slim, just no one knows when. I don't see anything else they could do to make the PS3 anymore bare than it possibly could be other than the miniturizing of the internal parts, other than that it'll be the same. And if they keep the parts the same but make the frame smaller, well then you'll see overheating problems and RROD's on the PS3. Either way, sure of course it's coming, who knows when.
What I want to know is there any reason other than a price drop do people want a slim version? Is it because you want it to be smaller? (People love smaller things now-a-days) Or because the smaller processor will lead to less wattage or something? Or do some people expect they're going to put B/C in slim line which is all sense not be slimming it down at all. Or do you think they'll make a slim without b/c and a new model with b/c and people can choose both? Honestly I don't think I can see Sony going back and re-installing B/C into it's products as they want to move forward, the only way I'd see it happening is via update and then it wouldn't matter what PS3 you had. This was long and on- and off-topic ._.;
This would be a turn for the books, if the failure rate of the PS3 Slim becomes a problem in the future. Knowing Sony they have done their job, but you never know… maybe a design defect, maybe the Slim will more flimsy and less resistant to shocks and dust. Who knows!

Also but something I didn't think about till now. The PS2 slim, when that came out, didn't they completely stop making the bigger sized ones? If so then wouldn't that mean all the bigger PS3's will no longer be manufactured? And if the smaller frame affects it at all and then only ps3's that have a problem like the rrod will be made, wouldn't that just be a major step backwards? (thats with the guessing that it is smaller in size and not on internals and such). But either way when the ps2 slim came out was it at a lower price or the same price as the bigger one when it came out? For all we know, they might make a slim and get rid of the 80gb, but keep it at the same price.
I don't like to assume but my guess is that the delay in releasing a "slim" model isn't really a delay. They have to go through extensive stress testing to ensure that the revision is a quality product that they can stand by. Unlike MS, Sony like to test things out and make sure that the approval rating is higher than the faulty rating. This isn't an assumption at all. Look at the history of MS. Push the product out, market the hell out of it, get it everywhere, then when enough fires start, get the patchwork crews going on two-thirds speed.
The reason why the slim would be slim is because Sony are already reducing the size and complexity of the internal components with each iteration, which results in less power consumption and less heat production, which in turn allows for less bulky methods of cooling. All of which is to say that a slim would not be more likely to have problems with overheating just because it is slim.
From a consumer's standpoint, I don't see the attraction in a slightly smaller unit, but from a manufacturer's standpoint it makes things like storage and shipping much more cost-effective.
Oh, and yes it would mean that the bulkier systems would not be manufactured anymore.
As for price, the price of the PS2 when the slim launched was already within the "mass-market" price range (and selling like, well, the Wii), so it made sense not to reduce the price. If the slim is real, then it is already being manufactured and is responsible for the 70% cut in manufacturing costs which Sony mentioned, so a price cut makes sense.

Don't care whether it's a secret or not. If it means price drops for older SKUs then I'm 100% for it. Consumers want this; Sony needs this.
agreed
consumers want a 299$ ps3 . SONY should cut the price as X360 is virtually finished
at 200$ X360 sells just as much as PS3 worldwide
now imagine PS3 sales at 299$ price tag. Honestly i expect 2009 to be the last year of x360 in the market
It almost seems inevitable, seeing as each and every PlayStation has received some sort of slimming. PlayStation to PSone, PlayStation 2 to slim-line PS2, PSP to PSP go!, and now it looks like we'll get a PSthree, or slim-line PS3 or whatever they call it. Im with you guys: it does seem it will happen. The question is, "When?"
you forgot to mention the two other redesigns/slim models of the psp (2000 & 3000)
i can't believe that that thing has been slimmed down three times!! technology is amazing.
hopefully the next version of the psp will actually be psp2. otherwise the psp will become sony's ipod, every time you turn around another redesign 😛
It does seem odd… It is strange how these corporate don't want us to enjoy the moment… holding everything back all the time…
As gamers here have mentioned many times before, we know there will be price drops… it has always happened in the past, and we know hardware shrinks too. Why the wall of smoke? Does one really think M$ does not know any of this?
What real competitive is there when all three console manufacturers are following each other so closely?
Q!
"i am home"
if the slim is real, then i bet sony is pissed since they can't keep anything under wraps
look at what happened with the psp go
i wonder if heads are rolling at SCE. cause you know the higher ups are downright infuriated about info leaks
I don't think leaks are that problematic in the current release/feature enhancement cycle… Possible reasons… this years E3 was enough to really show off what all 3 console manufacturers are doing and what they have lined up in the future… they are all tracking each other very closely.
The only herring in all of this is Nintendo… they may be working on Next Generation Hardware, that when released (2 years from now – possibly), may make life difficult for M$ and Sony… if they are slow off the block.
Nintendo would have seen what M$ and Sony are planning with motion sensing, and they have a good idea of what these consoles can really do thanks to some excellent exclusives. They can see the bar. They may be developing something secretly ready to unleash it in the future. In terms of leaks, I am sure that is one leak that would really infuriate a corporate…
But in the current cycle, I don't these current crop of leaks are that "damaging" either way…
In addition to this, whether we knew or not about an impending price cut, as soon as one of the console manufacturers announce this, the others will follow. These corporates have plan B, plan C and plan D in place… whilst timing may be off, they have already calculated the implications of following suite and dropping the price of their consoles by $100 dollars to match the competition… they already know and have modeled the losses or gains a forced move like this would incur.
It is all part of "game"… only "first mover" advantage here… which I admit can be something positive for the manufacturer in question.

i don't mean that the leaks are damaging….
it just sorta steals the thunder of the "holy crap!!" response and makes it more of a "that's pretty sweet, but it was more or less expected" kinda response
Yes, I hear you… the "holy crap" moment is it really…

Actually, I would say that these sorts of leaks do harm Sony in terms of sales. If people out there are convinced that there's a cheaper, newer version of the PS3 coming out anytime soon, they'll likely hold off buying the PS3 now and wait for the new model.
There's actually a name for this effect, but I don't remember what it is.
I have a question- Was it like this for the PS2 slim? Does anyone remember?

The ps2 slim and the psone redesign were really kind of late in their life cycle. If the PS3 slim came out now it would be a lot earlier than the other ones.
Original Playstation 3 is better
But yes, for those who wait/waited, hey here's your slim
@[email protected] scarecrow did you want fat princess or not? if not i'll give it to someone else, haha
How can you give games to someone else?
by a process known as 'sharing'
there's a thread (though not a positive one) about it in the forums.
Sorry 'bout that LegendaryWolfeh
You know I was rethinking this, and I think I rather support the creators of the game by buying the game.
You should gift this game to a close friend of yours or family member 🙂
But I do TRULY appreciate the offer, sorry for making you go through all that. I'll add you to my friends list regardless
Sh** I'll take it.

lol ok =) it's not prob that's how i feel about a lot of games too =D sorry jed i don't really know you too well =P lol also scarecrow can't wait to see you on that psn =D lol
Blame Sony for leaking the information, its not their fault for not announcing it yet. From the picture, it look pretty sexy
Your wrong for blaming Sony for leaked info. The people that work at the manufacturing plants or Sony in general all have camera phones which take pictures. It is the people that release this info. that are hurting the companies secret launch plans. If you try to sue the people that shoot these pictures it just makes the rumor even bigger as you can now see. Sony should take all this free rumor info. and use it as free advertisement and put out statistics for the console. They don't have to discuss a price or a date they can just say maybe in 3 to 6 months time. Maybe they can release a picture if they have it a say coming very soon. This way the people that like the "fat" model looks better can purchase, and the people who don't like the "fatty" can wait until the slim comes out before Santa arrives! This is what I would do.
How does Apple do it then? I am sure their employees and factory workers in Taiwan and China have access to their stuff…
…but yet, from what I have seen, no leak!
Q!

Qubex is right. Stuff this big almost never gets leaked so bad. Either Sony is getting sloppy, or they are really good at creating hype.
@ qubex
lol, your right.
@ pyrobomber
"Your wrong for blaming Sony for leaked info. The people that work at the manufacturing plants or Sony in general all have camera phones which take pictures. It is the people that release this info."
your right that it is the people, but they work for sony, therefore they represent their respective employer, even if only to a very small degree. so part of the blame does fall on sony
and if the camera phone thing really is an issue, then sony needs stronger rules about it.
that way there won't be any leaked information.
"They don't have to discuss a price or a date they can just say maybe in 3 to 6 months time. Maybe they can release a picture if they have it a say coming very soon. if they announce that the slim is coming soon without dropping the price of the "fat" model, then anybody that wanted a ps3 would wait until the slim is released. because if the slim model and the fat model are the same price, which do you think the consumer will opt for?
that would be bad for sony if they just had consoles sitting on the shelves for six months waiting for a newer version of the product to be released. granted the sales would surge at the time of release, but some customers might have gotten tired of waiting and just decided to settle with a 360
side note: i think this is the longest post i have ever done on this site, lol
All this time we've been saying that Sony doesn't advertise. It seems the hype machine is how they do it. Lol. Why spend millions on TV commercials, billboards and posters when you can pay some guy in china a few bucks an hour to take care of the hype for you? How much you want to bet that those leaked photos were taken on a Sony Ericsson phone?
I don't know if I'm on the right path or not, but you got to admit that it does seem a little strange. When there's PS3 commercials on TV there is no hype on the internet..Now I hardly see any Sony ads, but lots of hype about stuff we're not supposed to know about…Is internet hype Sony's new marketing strategy? Wouldn't surprise me.
@Quarktast1c
It may have been your longest, but it also may have been one of your best. Agreed.
i can't wait to see those 360 fanboys cry, when the ps3 finally outsells the 360. ¡viva la playstation!

Its the season that they had enough of Gears, I have factual evidence to prove it but it would be soo wrong
But Sony doesn't comment on rumors and speculation! Maybe they need to start doing so. Ben's right, the mystery is gone. I guess they just don't want to jeopardize potential sales until they absolutely have to.
I'm not sure but i think PS3 slim will be $400.
I hope it's not!
well the fat ones will be 299$
as long as SONY has a 299$ ps3 they will dominate gaming market
"We sincerely ask Sony to send out that press release today."

if there is indeed a slim with a less price, then I will get one for my other room; if there is none, this is fine for me as well; i am more focusing on the upcoming bunches of titles: Demon's Souls, AC2, Bayonetta, GOW3, Dante's Inferno, WKC, and ofcourse FF13 and v13 and The last guardian etc
lol i hear yah..
myself, if its coming before christmas, im getting 2.. 1 4 my living room, and one for my other living room… lol if it doesnt come, than im getting one 4 my other living room, and my 1st living room can wait… 😛
lol good luck with your PS3 "power house" 😛
Nicely put, Ben. I think most people's patience on the subject is wearing thin. It really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention. Enough with the games, Sony.
Sony isn't playing games.
@ highlander
your right. sony isn't playing games…… they're making them. damn good ones at that 😉
You know, I find that in this Information age we live in, information is currency, information is power, information is kudos, information is fame, information is King. With that in mind, it's really not a surprise that all the leaks happen. There are rumors and leaks all the time about Xbox, but PS3 owners are far less likely to read them compared to an Xbox 360 owner. So before we worry that this is somehow a problem unique to Sony, it is not. Sony is in a more vulnerable position because there is a great demand for information about their products. In most ways, that's not a bad thing for Sony. Demand for information is kinda the smoke of the fire of demand for the product itself, there being no smoke without fire of course.
But just think about this for a moment. There are millions upon millions of personal Blogs out there, a fair number of them by gamers. Gamers have jobs in stores. Stores get memos and directives all the time telling employees about changes in product line ups and what not, so it's no surprise that information leaks out of retailers. The same is true of assembly plants in the more advanced parts of Asia. People in most of Asia have plenty of access to the Net, not to mention camera phones and video games. So it's no stretch of the imagination to suppose that pictures of a new product might turn up, and it only takes one person being successful one time to make it happen.
Then we come to the matter of advancing technology and a greater level of technical knowledge among some of the media and some of the gaming public. Anyone who follows technology could have been aware more than a year ago that Cell BE would be manufactured at 45nm this year, and that this would be cooler and cheaper. It's not a huge leap of logic to project this from a smaller, cheaper and cooler Cell processor all the way to a less costly, smaller and perhaps even more reliable (cooler) PS3 model.
The Internet is a big information gathering machine, it takes all that information in, and if you look at it right and connect the dots, a picture emerges.
I don't think we can point a finger of blame at Sony, or even the Media. We're simply seeing the modern internet at work.
As for Sony and announcements. I think that they should keep their lips closed tightly until the event of their choosing and then blurt it all out as loudly and positively as they can. All the rumors and speculation focused on a slim model with a price cut (both of which are ultimately inevitable) takes the attention away from other things. Perhaps they have a surprise or two up their sleeves?
it is true that the internet is a giant info machine….. but it's also true that there's so much crap on the internet that it becomes hard to tell what is lies and what is truth
but having said that, i do think there is SOMETHING that sony has got under wraps and they don't want to announce just yet. whether or not it is a slim model, a price cut, or both remains to be seen
Just announce the PS3 Slim, and an October/November release date for GT5
i say announce the slim along with a price cut for current models and release the slim at the same time as GT5
