Gearbox “Nowhere” On Heat Game, IP “Isn’t Locked Down”

It's a totally bad-ass movie and one that might've made for a great video game. Well, although someone out there is still free to try, Gearbox Software has opted to pass on the project.

A game based on the critically acclaimed, Michael Mann-directed film "Heat" was announced back at E3 2006, and the Brothers in Arms developer was slated to create it. We have no idea if they were going for an open-ended GTA-style production, but they did say that at one point, the game was "in advanced stages with representatives for [Heat stars] Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer to be part of the video game sequel." Unfortunately, the project basically disappeared off the radar and we haven't heard much about it since. And now, according to GameSpot , Gearbox is simply moving on. Said CEO Randy Pitchford:

"In a nutshell, we're nowhere. We have passionate game makers that would love to do it. We've got filmmakers that think it's a great idea that would love to see it done. We have publishing partners that would love to publish it. But we have no time. That's the limiting factor.

Because of the situation, we're not keeping the IP locked down anymore. So if somebody else were in a spot where they could do it, and everybody was comfortable with that, then conceivably that could happen."

So it seems you won't be seeing Heat any time soon, although you will have the option of purchasing Gearbox's newest title, Borderlands , which is slated to drop on October 20. It's a highly anticipated sci-fi shooter with what should be an immense amount of depth, so we're excited about it. And as for the defunct project, well…the movie still rules. That's enough for us.

I doubt a game adaption can ruin a movie, The Godfather II didnt ruin the masterpeice. Infact The Warriors game last gen gave a great insight into what happend before.

Borderlands looks utterly amazing but it's a lot closer to Fallout 3 than it is to KillZone 2.

I thought Borderlands was going to be an awesome game until they changed to cell-shading, cartoony look.

If you can't do proper textures and lighting just go cartoony…..that seems to be the answer this gen.

The developers and programers will try to make you believe it was a design choice…..it's not. They just got stuck with something that doesn't work and don't have the time and resources to fix it.

Soooo….Let's take the easy way out….cell-shading and comic book cut-scenes instead of CGI. Yeah, Yeah, good idea, That's the ticket!

Laziness and lack of dedication IMO.

Wow. That's ignorant on an amazing level.

Borderlands changed because when it had those high quality textures that you described, the game had no personality. The new concept-art-style gives the game exactly what it was lacking. A unique look to go along with it's unique game-style. If you don't like it that's fine but to call it lazy is insane.

Hey….when your frame-rate sucks then you have to cut corners somewhere.

The game had plenty of "personality" from what I could tell from early previews. My guess is that they couldn't fit the game on a DVD for the 360 so they had to do something to save space but yet allow for the gameplay the developers were looking for.

Indeed

Though i have to say the Cell-Shading Style is hardly "Unique" anymore.

That cell look looks like garbage.

It's not truly cell shaded and it looks quite a bit different from cell shading in my opinion. It's looks like the kind of painted concept art you see as bonus features for many games, and that's what they were going for, so it's a smashing success I say.

What are you talking about World? What cell?

i hope its not caned its looking like a really cool game.
the more GTA clones we have the better, there my favorite genre besides survival horror.
but theres barely any good survival horror games out….. sadly resi and silent hill have bitten the dust.

Yeah, I've been waiting for 'Hei$t' since 2007, and I don't think even a single thing has been released for it. And it seems it get pushed back another half-year every few months, so I have no idea what's going on with that.

Anyway, too bad about 'Heat.' I enjoy playing video game adaptations/continuations of films that aren't brand new.

Heat would not make a good game if you ask me, so I guess it's a good thing nobody is working on this.

Kane and Lynch tried to pull this genre off, robbing banks and what-not, but it was mediocre at best. The one mission in GTAIV was close to that "Heat" feel….and that was all I need from this type of scenario.

that would be the best game, no game has done that before.
finally something original.
thats why im looking forward to heist so much if it ever comes out.
kane and lynch was decent i think they announced a sequel.
but a robbing game would cause allot of controversy, if GTA gets flaked because it "teaches kids to perform drive buys"
imagine what the media will cook up with heist.
