When a game is expressly designed for online play, that fact is often enough to propel it to immense popularity, even in the face of better single-player games that offer online multiplayer.
If we were to ask you, "what's the biggest online game on the PlayStation 3," you'd probably respond with Killzone 2 or maybe Warhawk . Well, it's neither, and it's not even the awesome 60-player Resistance 2 ; according to SCEA senior producer Mark Rogers, it's SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation . As reported by Joystiq , Confrontation has "the most simultaneous online connections on the PlayStation Network," and he says it has a lot to do with "the community's commitment to the franchise." Rogers also adds that such dedication will be rewarded with an upcoming patch, although we don't have any exact details on that update just yet. He did tease us, however, by saying that the "massive scale and scope" of that patch has prompted "an extended testing cycle," so Slant Six has been very hard at work in terms of preparation. On top of which, there's even more DLC scheduled, so it's fairly obvious that your support means a game will invariably get their support. Just the way of the industry, really.
Now, while we will certainly agree that there are better games out there, we'd like to remind you that we waited a bit for the team to fix a few of the crucial issues Confrontation suffered from at launch. We made a point of saying that in the review. And you know what? It's a pretty damn good game, and we're willing to bet that it just gets better with time…oh, and that big ol' patch oughta be interesting, too.
Related Game(s): SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation
And here I thought it was Resistance 2…
Anyway, still an exclusive
Goes to show that exclusives are still the real deal
would of thought it would of been one of the call of duty's
They should release the fixed up patched version as a Greatest Hits release. It should qualify as a GH, seeing as how it must of sold pretty well to have the most online players.
but this game is crap
Talk about a shocker. Of course SOCOM has always had it's followers so maybe it's just a case of sticking with what you love.
Go hop on Socom forums, the community is dedicated but pissed.
I just wish they would patch it to allow for teams to play against computer AI opponents. That way, me and my friends can play.
Joining random multiplayer teams and getting kicked cuz of your noob status is pretty tiring…
Also, not everyone likes playing with/against people they don't know.
LOL @ n00b status

Can't believe it! Here I was waiting for Socom 4 but I guess this game won't go away any time soon.
This is a surprise. After they fixed up the game it did become a pretty solid shooter, but I haven't played it in so long because I got bored with the maps. Be interesting to see what the patch is that they are coming out with. But no mention of any DLC…Have to wait and see I guess.
Although in hindsight, after having screwed up the launch of this game so badly, maybe Slant Six needs to provide some free maps to those that didn't turn around and trade the game in right away.

Going to have to take that back, lol, I went over to Socom.com and found this:
"Many of you have been eagerly awaiting information on the SOCOM: Confrontation DLC pack and today weâre happy to announce that DLC will be available to the community later this summer.
We'll be unveiling a lot more information on the contents of the pack in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here are the basic things you can expect to see in this huge update to SOCOM: Confrontationâ¦
* All new Area of Operation
* New Features
* New Game Mode
* New Maps
* New Characters
* New Weapons & Attachments
* New Music
* New Voice-Over
Weâve got a lot in the pipeline for this so please stay tuned!"
There's also a thumbnail on the site of what looks like a winter level…Could be interesting…

From what they been saying 1.5 is huge, it's been in testing for a couple months. 1.6 is going to have free DLC included, 2 new factions and some weapons. Probally won't have free maps but hopefully put a bunch a maps together for a cheap price.
Not sure why one of my comments is waiting to be seen by a moderator, but if you go to the socom website there is a write up of what's coming for the new content, as well as a thumbnail of the new level.
That's because you said (dot)com
yea i have been playing this game since october and i still consider it the best online multiplayer
<In generic announcer vox>
John: Well, there you have it folks? SOCOM is crowned the victor. The judges came with a shocking decision there, Bob?
Bob: Yea they sure did, John. This means SOCOM remains the online champ after 2 generations! Staggering news, John. Just staggering.
John: Here's some interesting news. It seems that SOCOM has a new challenger for its next fight this fall. And get this…the fighter's trainer is SOCOM's former trainer, Zipper.
Bob: Really?! Whats the challenger's name?
John: MAG?…*whispers* (Really? Ok.)…MAG, Bob. That should be a great title fight this fall. Will MAG take the crown?
<queue sign-off music>
Tune in next time, folks. I'm John Bandicoot.
Bob: And I'm Bobby Kratos. Good night everybody!
Well I bought the bundle for the head set, and was completely unsatisfied by the game. Great and surprising news none the less.
No waaaaaayyyyy…….
Glad to be a part of that community.
I want to see the figures they're basing this off of.
i'm surprised. I thought it was Warhawk.
It probably was, even after SOCOM's (horrendous) launch, but Warhawk hasn't had an update (to reinvigorate interest) in months and people have probably migrated to a number of other games.
Last time I played, the match was nearly empty.
I don't think this includes 3rd party games.
I think you're right, although the way Ben did the title it's the "biggest online title on the PS3" Probably more people are buying the exclusives on the PS3 over a multi-plat like COD. I don't have the number of sales though but I bought Resistance 2 instead of WAW, And on my game shelf, I've got all the exclusive shooters (Warhawk, R1,R2, KZ2) and not a single COD…wonder how many other Sony users do the same?
I said it before on a previous post but for some reason in my mind when I think COD, I automatically think of Xbox. Maybe it's the way it was marketed because I know it's multiplat, I just don't see it that way.
I think Ch1nook is right, though over 4 million people bought COD4 on PS3, more than any of the other games.
Oh, and my shelf looks the same (with SOCOM rather than Killzone); no COD of any kind.

Socom may be the biggest but Warhawk is still superior to all still thats great since I'm thinking of getting Socom I'll probably buy it over Killzone 2
Don't do that, lol the only reason I bought Confrontation before KZ2 was for the Bluetooth lol. I honestly cannot get into SUSNS:C, I've tried it casual and I've tried to force myself to get into it but no such luck for me.
i wanted some numbers
It'll be in 2nd when GT5 comes out. 😉
Woohoooooo, oh yeah I can't wait.
wow looks like quality means nothing these days.
the 3 most popular online titles are also the most buggy or repetitive crap ive ever played.
1st i was so excited for SOCOM Confrontation when it was announced than i found out it was online only and was like WTF.
i was pissed and refused to buy the game.
but since theres been 0 games out this month and it just came out here (another perfect example of sony giving us the finger and having to wait months after the US this is getting EXTREMELY ANNOYING!)i thought what the hell and bought it.
biggest mistake of my life, never have i ever played a game thats so unbalanced and unpolished.
its like its still in pre beta stage.
well i know what im doing tomorrow.
2nd COD4 i hate hate hate that game i cant see how people could possible enjoy that its so repetitive and frustrating.
3rd halo 3.
o where do i start with that?
well ill just say your at war and its sunshine lolly pops and rainbows.
wheres the atmosphere?
im 99.99% sure when your at war with bombs going off 2 cm away from your ear its not going to be sunny with a rainbow and birds whistling and angels flying buy to give you cookies.

i can't beleive it because this game is massive dog shit. Glitches everywhere and every time slant six games releases a patch it fixes some glitches but it makes new ones at the same time. Also this game is filling up people's hard drives since every patch is a gb. finally this game is a big let down. And slant six games should stop making socom because they are really noobs. Zipper interactive really should me making the socom series since they already deliver on the previous games. And i do hope MAG is a worth title.
