As many of you know, a whole lot of developers and studios have signed on to use the uber-popular Unreal Engine 3, which has powered many titles this generation thus far. But another Unreal Engine is on the way and in the meantime, we hear about another upgrade, although it may be limited to internal use at Sony.

It seems that the Killzone 2 engine may be implemented in several current Sony projects for the PlayStation 3, and Guerrilla Games is working to improve that engine even as we speak. GameGuru apparently says the rotation of this engine among Sony studios is a "closely guarded secret," so it may not become available to third-party developers. The aforementioned UE3 engine has been licensed out to just about everyone and while we kinda like the idea of such a powerful engine getting widespread attention, it's also cool that Sony has such a great engine all to themselves. Of course, Guerrilla may be free to do whatever they want with it, but it seems they want to keep it under wraps at this particular moment in time. For the time being, we'll always be on the lookout for any news concerning Killzone 3 , but it's exciting to learn that some semblance of KZ2 may be found in new titles. This is one engine that ought to get some major attention, regardless of where it goes.

Anyway, what games do you think might benefit from the KZ2 engine? Other FPSs? Or might it be adapted to something more exotic; can you imagine using it for an action/RPG…?

I so called this like 5 months ago.

The best thing for sony is to own a great engine like this so they can distribute it among their own developers instead of having everyone write their own engine. Saves time, saves money, and should make games better.

NO sony needs to use the engine for MAG or the ps3 exclusive quantum.

You're not the only one who called this months ago.

I've written about Sony using the Killzone engine, as well as the Uncharted 2 engine, on other Sony games around the time Killzone 2 was released.

I would love to see this engine used in the next Twisted Metal. Imagine the chaos that would be displayed with an engine like that… Oh wait you can in KZ2. lol

Maybe use the engine for something like a horror game. Now that would be sweet.

Great idea! I'd love to see that engine for the next Deadspace (although that won't be won't happen). Maybe in the next Resident Evil…Capcom isn't too proud.

The next Elder Scrolls game could really benefit from the weighted controls. And the dark, dank dungeons would look really good with this engine too.

IMO Killzone 2 is the best looking game to date. I don't care what Unreal Engine 3 game comes out. Its not messing with what Guerrilla cooked up. I think the only competition for that engine is Naughty Dog's Engine.

Here's an interesting article about top game engines this gen:

Don't know why Killzone 2 isn't on there but…whatever 😉

Ya there's an idea. Let's take a game that in all likelihood will have tremendous lag issues (at least at first) and compound that problem by also forcing it to deal with all the graphical power from KZ2. And since the load times from the massive scale of the maps be won't quite mind numbing enough to send you into a coma let's give it crazy high resolution textures to load too. Oh wait, the PS3 doesn't have enough RAM to handle that much epic? too bad.

CH1N00K

Do we know what engine MAG is using already? When I saw the demo I kind of thought that the gameplay looked very similar to KZ2. Not just because it's an FPS, but the colors and the way the character moves reminded me of playing Killzone online…

Just curious what MAG is using.

I saw the CryEngine3 tech demo…It "pwns" nothing especially on the PS3. It has great physics though.

i think it being used for the syphon filter 5.
remember that rumor about the game being in development?
syphon filter is easily my best game ever, next to MGS. my favourite is still syphon filter 2 on the ps1. which is still better than most games availabe. i wish capcom could do a dino crises remake, or sumthin like that. thats my third most favourite game. that said and done.

SONY…. syphon filter 5 pls.

I used to love the Syphon Filters. I always thought that they would have brought out more to compete against Tom Clancy's Splinter Cells, Kind of hoping that they do another one soon.

Now it make sense to see why the line-up of Sony's exclusives are slow and late. Making a lot of engines for the games to be shared amongst *cough exclusive developers so that more quality games could come to the table in faster more affordable way.

The 10 year cycle is getting truer and truer as we speak. Who knows, maybe the next-gen PSX will feature an next-gen Cell-processor meaning the devs won't have to "re-learn" a new system again. PS3 may be all about the ground-up (which explains delayed games, online updates, et)then the later years will be all about building from that foundation.

jerocarson

Ooops, sorry for the double post.
Ricochet, i complete agree with you, but it's SONY to decide, i can only hope they build upon the cell and not a new one with new series of complains from developers.

This is great news; and not surprising. With that technology available to Sony studios why not? Make use of it; a lot of games just pale in comparison to what KZ2 achieved really… KZ2 has the best engine I have seen… MGS4 a close second, and closer still is GT5. These engines have grunt… but I think the KZ2 engine could be used for many game genres to date…

Lots of interesting things coming up.

Let us not forget Unchartered 2 and GoWIII… Heavy Rain is another one…

The nicest engine from 3rd parties (in my opinion is) the EGO engine from CodeMasters.

Q!

dident GG confirm a few months ago that no ones using there engine.
KZ2 will be the only game running on that engine till the next GG game comes out.
if they are using it for other titles 2 words.
SYPHON FILTER 5.
one engine that does not get enough attention/praise is the engine from red faction guerrilla.
that game had good graphics and a physics engine that made me shat my pants.
the way concrete cracks so realisticly, you dont have to destroy the whole building just take down a load bearing colloum and
TTTTTTTIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMMMBBBBBEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR

I don't think we need new FPS games. Killzone 3, hell yeah but we don't "new" FPS games coming to PS3 for a while. I guess this engine should be used to produce a brilliant RPG game or a true survival horror game like RE1 or RE2 (and not at all like RE5 which is anything but a survival horror game).

I love how KZ2 looks but I am starting to believe that Naughty Dogs have outdone themselves and other studios. It's true that we are yet to see what results the KZ2 engine can produce when used for a game with more colors, environments etc but for now, I think Uncharted 2 has already surpassed the looks of KZ2 and I couldn't be happier. We need a healthy, positive competition WITH collaberation amongs Sony's first party studios. That means brilliant PS3 games pushing the PS3 hardware to the max.

dude its a demo, theres bound to be glitches, even the highly polished KZ2 had several glitches in the demo.
give the game a shot, once you find the walkers you will be bringing down buildings till the cows come home.
out of all the games out this year KZ2 infamous and red faction guerrilla are my top 3.
