I believe my first expression when looking at the ensuing figures was, "…what the deuce?"
But it appears what we saw at Sony's E3 press conference concerning motion technology is only the tip of the iceberg. During that presentation, we saw the new LED wand used in combination with the EyeToy to provide a whole new type of motion-sensing interactivity. But it seems they're not stopping there. According to a new patent found by Siliconera , Sony wants to institute a motion control system that utilizes "everyday objects." Basically, a camera would "dynamically map an object – any real world object – for use in a video game." Evidently, this can include anything from coffee mugs to books; it can actually recognize any 3D object and analyze its movements, which means the possibilities should be endless . I mean, we could sit here all night coming up with ideas ("hey, my tennis racket is a sword now!"), but we'll let you do that. For the time being, we're just excited that Sony plans to take motion control to a world the Wii could never have dreamed of. That's not a knock on Nintendo, it's just…okay, it's a knock on Nintendo. The point is, we're looking at something pretty darn advanced, and it's awfully intriguing.
We may find more news on this as time goes on, and we hope Sony will provide us with official details at some point. Maybe they'll have a second presentation at the Tokyo Game Show in September and we can all be wowed again.
thats great maybe ill get more use outta my playstation eye
COME ALREADY DAMN!
I honestly see no need for motion controls. I mean I plan on gaming for the rest of my life but if motion controls become the new controllers I don't see how I'll be playing when i become old:(
it wont it just gonna be an add on
don't know why you're thumbed down so much but trying to even it out for ya
Nice pic, Night.
thanks:)
I don't want to do this, it's corny and ridiculous. I don't want to be swinging around some real hammer and see a digital one in a game…check out the games radar real life VS video games…video games nearly always wins for a reason. I don't know what silly cunt thought of this idea, but everyone is going crazy for it, first with Natal, now this. It's stupid.
Major rip off of nintendo, maybe that's why I like this. Can't say it will cause any affect on nintendo because I can't imagine Sony making games entirely based around this, it will more be downloadable content like the playstation eye, but this does look pretty sweet, depending on the price I might just pick this up. but everyone keeps saying that this will bankrupt nintendo but ya all got to remember, nintendo does have some pretty good games and the ps3 will never see them, such as smash bros. and that new metroid other m looks damn impressive, but the ps3 does have graphics, and I'm sure developers are going to make some of the wiis games multi plat for the ps3 and wii, it's only in there best interest, all they have to do is put it on the ps store and they don't even have to worry about packaging the games, it costs them vertually nothing, it would be nice to play something like redsteel on my ps3, but this could also mean someone could make some form of emulator through lynux and all us to play wii games, the ps3 does have the capability to play wii and xbox 360 games, have you ever put a 360 game in "this is a 360 game, you cannot play this on a ps3" it can read it but won't allow you to play it, if Sony really wanted to ruin micro$oft or nintendo, simply put the emulator out and claim soemone put it out as "homebrew" everyone would sell their 360 because they could simply play all the games on ps3 and 360 for half the cost. and if you include the wii in there that's almost a third the cost, I don't know about you but that is something Sony should really look into if they want all the buisness on the market, but then again a lot of these xbots would start crying and look for more reasons on how there system is far better (ugh I can't believe I just types that all through my iPhone, you guys really need to look into an iphone/itouch app in the app store…)
Thats been done before on the Dreamcast for PS1 software. Needless to say, Sony would never revert to this desperate move. The emulation would be horrible, and Microsoft would sue Sony for every cent they're worth.
That sounds pretty wild, if for some reason I ever get this thing I suppose I shouldn't use my real swords as in game swords. A few things in the vicinity may get trashed.
Time to hit them weights, duder. 😛
Omg …my pool cue is now Sephiroth's Masamune? whoa
The Sonymote just keeps sounding beter & better all the time.
Of course I wouldn't foresake any of my other controllers, but a mote working on the right game can only enhance the gaming experience.
I find it funny that Microsoft's motion tech was all over different news outlets, but this is the only place Ive seen any info on Sony's new stuff. Wonder why that is…
Whoa so the EyeToy could possibly put my PSP IN THE GAME?!??! AWESOME!!!
I sense….accidents…many…accidents.
Mapping a loaded gun?
I sense…lawsuits…many lawsuits.
King James: Yeah I was thinking the same thing. You guys remember the pics that hit the net just after the Wii came out? I rate this will be a lot worse, and in a twisted way a lot more entertaining and funnier to see…
Imagine you and a friend/two sets of boxing gloves/ a fighting game and just a little bit of competition….
I rate it'll take me about 7.13 seconds to really start knocking the crap out of buddy for real…You know how guys get. Just hope the Eye Toy will allow us to record everything. I see plenty of YouTube hits coming in that case…
Show me more and then I'll belive ya!
I'd like to see a game use this in an amazing why (which is better than anything a controller can do) <—-The problem is that that's rarely the case with motion controllers. Unless it's casual games.
We'll see
didn't natal already show this? i mean with the skateboard and skateboarding game??
this seems to be some weird gimmick in gaming now days… everyones gotta swing a little stick around and stuff now days… what ever happened to picking up the ol' paddle and pressing the A,B,X,Y buttons and whooping the sh!t out of koopas?
my point is that motion tech like the wii,ps3,natal are all gimmicks… waste yer money on em if you want, ittl just collect dust in the corner 3 months later…
It would be cool if you could map yourself or a friend to use as a game's main character or enemy.
or home?
or bored again.
please sony dont chuck a Nintendo and force this on your games.
as a option fine but DO NOT FORCE IT!
plus i think they should be focusing there time on more important stuff.
like giving us what they promised.
DAM IT I WANT MY HEAVY RAIN!
IMO. They should just make more good games instead of spending money on this controller. =/
If this technology is implemented intelligently then maybe it will add another layer of immersiveness to our gaming experience, and if not, then people won't you use it and you don't have to worry about being used in all your games.
Regardless, for the people who clearly have a hostile attitude towards this motion stuff, I don't think its gonna takeover so suddenly that you're gonna be left without a hobby.
This means that $7 lightsaber I bought at wal-mart can actually be put to use…
I'm slowly coming round to the idea of a steering wheel and having to sit upright. Now they expect me to actually stand up!
For me, a proper gaming sesh is no less than 6 hours. There's no way on Earth I could stand up for 6 hours!!1
…maybe on the moon.
lol standing 4 6 hours?
no prob
i stood in line that long just to stand in a field for another 12 hours watching AC/DC, The Stones, ect… live in toronto…
😛
@RadioHeader,
Standing 4-6 hours?
Hell, I guess you never make it to that original history-making "Woodstock Music Festival" then, huh?
(unless of course, it was a bit before your time)?
Nintendo and Sony are brothers they cant live with out eachother. Sony uses motion control starting next year in 2010, and I expect to see the Nintendo HD in 2011, but to be revealed E3 10 with
the addition of a blueray player built into it with a more powerful GPU etc…
Your theoretical WiiHD sounds pretty cool, let's see how the games turn out. Will there be carnage, or cooking?
I want a trampoline, one of them suits they used while filming the matrix (with bungy type wires fixed to it, keeping me on the trampoline). A set of HD goggles and a light sabre.
Then its Yoda time…
or even bust some Bruce Lee moves on a virtual Chuck Norris 🙂
Hell, If i could map Gabe on to some plastic / rubber dummy on the other end of the trampoline, I think i would be in heaven.
Ok, a bit far fetched and costly i know, but the future is bright people. May be in another 10 years.
one can only dream.

@ Wano,
I like it, I like it!!!!
Where today's dreams become tomorrow's reality, but only for the PS3!
could i use my real guitar to play guitar hero?
that would be neat
I could use a stick for a sword. Or I could use my fist to punch an enemy in the game!
