Sony has been talking about an "expanded Network" for quite some time, and now it seems that the magic moment may arrive some time next year.

We're talking about a far-reaching, more widespread service that would incorporate electronics outside of the PS3 and PSP; instruments like Sony TVs, cell phones, and other gadgets and accessories. And now, according to what PlayStation head man Kaz Hirai said in a recent Fortune report , the bigger and better Network could make its presence felt as early as Spring 2010. Apparently, as CEO Howard Stringer said, it will allow Sony devices "to talk to each other efficiently," and ultimately, it will be a more streamlined process when handling the various equipment and performing certain tasks (like editing video or sharing and storing content, for instance). The report also goes on to say that Sony may make some interesting acquisitions that will help to "accelerate the effort," and that it won't all happen overnight: this new and expanded Network will have to roll out over time, which sounds logical to us. As we've been saying over the past week or so, the PSN has made tremendous strides over the past few years and if Sony can successfully make this next leap, it would be absolutely enormous.

We'll keep an eye on what transpires in the near future, and if this report is accurate, we could all be looking at a very different Network this time next year…

Sounds awesome! just as long as they don't make you pay for it(like XBL but then again XBL is only for the Xbox 360 and no other Microsoft products)

Have it be spread to the Walkman MP3 players, Sony VAIO Cameras, Sony phones…

and maybe even T-800 Terminators :p

If that'd actually happen (your last remark) then XBOX can consider itself extinct (like the human race, if the stuff in the terminator movies actually happened!!).

No Chief can save them now.

@Victor321

I'm certain no matter how awesome the sony service is, there will still be a large enough mindless microsoft club supporting the xbox live.

After all, why have something good for free when you can pay for something worse?

It'd cool if you were able to talk to your psn pals on other thing too.

this is how they will push their other electronics, by making the whole expanded network thing only integrate with sony products.

that's completely fine by me, cause sony makes some great stuff 🙂

I read an article a few months back where one of the Sony honcho's said that after all's said & done, they want the PS3 to be able to link up to almost everything in your house, and not just with their own Sony products.

I can just imagine pressing the wrong button on the Sonymote while in battle….
the bad thing is that you just died, but the good news is that your garage door has now opened.

Or your refrigerator just made you a sandwhich! Rather than someone stealing your bike or lawnmower cuz your garage is now open.

I CRAVE True Blood, give me HBO content. I'm tired of being forced to search for the torrent, I'll gladly pay the 1.99 off the PSN.

Hey LV,
I keep hearing about "torrent" this & "torrent" that, so exactly what is "torrent"?

Doesn't Panasonic do something like this all ready? I have a plasma and there is an option to sync other Panasonic devices to it ??

That would be really cool if they could join forces with apple and kill off microsoft 😀 But then again i'm not sure if apple is trustworthy and might try to make there own console behind sony's back….But it would be pretty cool having free video chat to your psn peeps on your iphone and something like that.

Sony is going to make some interesting acquisitions? Sounds like they are going to buy Microsoft, Apple, Unix, and combine them all under a Yellow Dog Linux banner and automate everything in a simple cross platform programming language and make a daily shower just a voice command away. I wanna be George Jetson!

It would be cool if you could hook up your Sony TV and watch people slugging it out in various PSN games. When I was in Holland about 10 years ago there was a channel showing a Quake 3 server, and it was the only channel I needed.

How's that for advertising the PS3!

@LT, Nope, just an old-timer that's now hip to some of the stuff out there.
I figure it's something to do with modding though.

No worry's though, I'll just google/wikipedia it, (like I should have done in the first place, but was tired & being lazy).

Its okay, I understand I was being a smarty pants. When I speak of torrents I'm talking about files that can be downloaded via P2P. It's frowned upon by many law abiding citizens. Its a great way of getting hard to find media from the yester-years.

OOPS, I meant "NOT" so hip to some of the newer stuff out.
