Okay, so Final Fantasy VII may be the biggest recent release to hit the PlayStation Store in digital download form, but yet another title from that legendary franchise may soon be headed to the PSN…
As you can see by this ESRB listing , it's Final Fantasy Tactics . Typically, when a game pops up on the ESRB radar – especially one that's over a decade old – it means it will enjoy a re-release of sorts on the Network or Xbox Live Marketplace. We believe FFT is already on the Japanese Store, but we can't be sure… Anyway, for those of you who are unfamiliar, FFT is a strategy/RPG that utilized the now-archaic turn-based mechanic, but is arguably the most accomplished title of its kind. Featuring the Job class system that allowed for almost infinite possibilities and a fantastic storyline (despite an occasionally wonky translation), FFT is a favorite amongst old-school strat/RPG fans, and it will make for an excellent addition to the PS1 downloadable classic collection on the PSN. Perhaps it won't be long before all of Squaresoft's gems will be available; you know Final Fantasy VIII , Final Fantasy IX , Vagrant Story , Chrono Cross , Xenogears, Legend of Mana , Brave Fencer Musashi , Threads of Fate , etc. It would give modern gamers the chance to see a very different Square (from a time when it could do no wrong), and give veteran gamers the chance to reminisce. Yep, Squaresoft really was that good in the late '90s.
For my part, I think most all loyal PSXE readers are aware of my love of FFT. Hence, if any of you don't currently own the game and also opt to pass on a downloadable version, I will find you and do bad things. …you can save us both a lot of time and unnecessary pain if you simply do the right thing…

lol excellent post Ben. Umm.. I have the psone version, and the remade PSP version (which is super awesome in so many ways, and only falters in one I think with delayed sound effects for some spells)
I would however LOVE to be able to buy some other games that you mentioned. I played the demo for Xenogears and I remember liking it. Umm.. I have not played Vagrant Story but I remember reading up about it (when we used to buy gaming magazines, remember those days? …what? they still sell those? ….why?)
So glad that I still have access to the PSN through my PSP though, since my PS3 is on the fritz. For anyone that is curious (in a similar situation maybe) here in Canada it'll cost me about $169 as per a Sony email I received about my issue. Apparently (from what I've read on forums) umm… Sony sends you a box and everything that will be needed to send it away to Sony to get fixed up (or have a new or refurbished system sent out)

So Ben are you planning on a re-buy just to have it on the hard drive?
Of course he is =O lol i dunno xD
Nah. I've got a mint condition original copy of FFT. No need. 🙂
oh come on ben =D you know you want it on your ps3, just for the sake of having or a backup if the cd magically breaks, and then vise versa if the data gets deleted.
I feel ya, I've still got a mint non-greatest hits FFVII so I won't be buying it on PSN even if I'm tempted to just for the hell of it 🙂
I spent a fortune on getting a PSP just to play the remake, so I don't know if I'll download this either.
Now, if they made a full-fledged PS3 exclusive sequel, THAT I would gladly buy!
-Arvis
man, i so happy they released FFVII. i have an original 1997 release copy thats beat to hell(not my doing)i got from a friend. My copy of FFT was stolen so i maybe picking this up on the PSN.
One of those games I never got to get bacbk in the days.
Will get it for sure
Though I'm not much of a SRPG fan, but they're still fun.
Day one purchase for me of course, on a side note, i was playing FF7 via ps3 and such, i got a ways in, only to realize i didn't have any space on the ps1 virtual memory card on the ps3, so =| i had to quit the game…to make a new one..i got depressed 🙁
I dunno if you needed to do that, did you try hitting the PS button and checking out the options. I know 3 hours after I started Suikoden I found out I had no PS1 virtual card and I was able to create one from there, then save.
I tried, couldn't find an option to do it. I thought I could just delete some space or make a new one but it wouldn't let me do either 🙁 I had a lot of FF9 and 8 stuff on their as well as like medievil and spyro and a ps1 gundam game, haha. but oh well, fixed it up now
Did you at least get to put your old saves onto a USB device?
God……I can't handle it anymore. There are so many games from my past that are resurfacing. I already have waaaaay too much crap to play. I think I'm ready to pull my hair out. I love FFT with all my heart, but I have blown so much money in the past year on games that I'll probably never touch again. I love Metal Gear more than anything else and I haven't even't gotten to the two AC!D games for PSP. It's like late night infomercials for old women. I know that I'm gonna mess with it for about a week, then it's going to end up in a drawer somewhere collecting dust. Being an adult sucks. Thank you for your time. Has anyone played either MGA? Ben? Anybody? I miss my sanity.

"Being an adult sucks."

LOL. I always do the right thing like Spike Lee.
You make unrealistic dialogue for white people? ;P

Yea. Doesn't every director in showbiz?
I'm super psyched about the recent FFVII download. And being able to play from my old game saves is AWESOME! I'm pretty sure I'll get FFT when it comes out (…if it comes out?) but I would sell my soul for some Xenogears action! I have two copies, both of which have crapped out on me. The concept of a digital version that can never fail due to scratches makes me very, very happy.

It's why I repurchased FF7…watched the intro…then started playing Prototype. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and it's only $10? That's a big bonus too 🙂
@fatelementality
How is Prototype anyway? It's either that or Ghostbuters for me, can't afford both. But I have played and finished inFamous so I'm leaning toward Ghostbusters… Kinda hoping I can see a review from PSXE first.
@Zemus101
Heck yeah its a big bonus. It sure beats the $65 Buy It Now price I was about the spend on e-bay to get another copy.

Prototype is amazing. I haven't had this much fun playing a game in years. The sheer amount of destruction is incredible. Take Wolverine, The Hulk, Carnage, and blend them together for the hero. It's really alot of fun. If your a big Ghostbusters fan, you might wanna hold off on Prototype though. Hmmm…….i dunno what to tell you really.
Have you played inFamous? I'm wondering if the games are so similar in style that I may as well skip it. I feel like this is when Armageddon and Deep Impact came out. Both very similar but one was clearly better than the other. I'd just hate to find out that I spent my money on the inferior one.
holy hell! yes! i would SO purchase this! bring it to the US PS store. I already have the PSP version.
Def will cop FFT once it hits the PSN. And thank you Ben for mentioning Brave Fencer Musashi. Alot of people sleep on that game but it was really good.
Sidenote: Since Brave Fencer was mentioned…am I the only one that thinks they should remake Soul Blade for the next gen?
Another great game I always wanted to get…
But the sequel to it was kinda bad if I'm right…
Playstation1 was such a great console
Damn
Do you think SE will be getting the numbers on these sales and finally realize that Playstation owners are where it's at?
3 things can happen
1) they do realize the user base of playstation as their strongest sales point, then they start pushing for more PS instead of 360
2) they do realize it, but they continue their stupid idea of 360 is where its at for RPGs and that most 360 fans actually care about FF they way PS owners do
(maybe a few do, but not large scale)
or
3) they don't realize it because they have become blinded after "The Merger"….
the event where the games that came afterward just weren't as great as the squaresoft days
(granted not all of them were affected, like KH2 and MAYBE FF12)
I might pick this up, I had the original but I was much younger when I played it and the difficulty was very high for me. I think/hope I can handle it now!
@G-WiZ199
I agree about the soul blade thing, that game was amazing and I would love to see a remake! I spent endless hours playing.
i didn't download FF7 since i have a 60 GB ps3
and sorry to tell ya ben, but i have never played tactics :(. don't shoot me! lol
but if i do play it, i will try my hardest to find it on disc since i will not waste my time in downloading ANY* game that i can find on disc
*emphasis on any
if i can't find it then i will consider a DL……. maybe…….
Any PS3 will play FFVII or any other PS1 disc.
FFVII is only 1.35 gbs large.
Meh…..wake me up when FF8 or FF9 make their way to the PSN.
gonna be awhile.
i still have Mint Condition copies of FFVIII and IX. id still buy digital copies of them. The building if PSOne digital library from until october will make a for a great PSP Go! experience at launch.
This isn't a PS3 version of War of the Lions is it?
If in fact Final Fantasy Tactics is released as a PSone classic there will be no Luso or new CG sequences methinks…
@Limited
Damn straight.

@ Zubra
Where you been!?
Yeah we missed your "just slapped in the face" porn star avatar.
Shit son!.
I have a feeling that if I don't find a way to buy this game 'aktuD neB' will totally eviscerate me!
🙁
I still have my original and want The Lion War UMD, how many times will this be released?
One last time, I suggest you pick up the UMD. You can find it for under 10 dollars and it contains worthy additions not found in the original PS1 being ported to the PSN.
There hasn't been much for RPG strategy this gen, just Disgaia and that's hardly a shiny game, maybe SE should make a new FFT for this gen.
If FF13 is any sign enjoy waiting another 8 years for it.
But Blood Omen got rated by the ERSB at least 100 years ago and I'm still WAITING!! I'm not gonna rely on this if SCEE doesn't get there act together regarding PSone classics
nice to see but I already re-beat it once this year, finally made sure to get the reqs for deep dungeon. Makes the final bosses look like pansies.
And I still say they should make a full blown current gen sequel. Ps3 needs more rpgs than you can count on one hand already.
eeeewwwwwwww
I have yet to buy a PSone classic. But i have really thought about FF7 and/or CSOTN. If they were 5bucks like the others I would have bought them. Do they load faster/look any better than the originals? I imagine they load faster…how much?
They load a lot faster. FF7 loads a saved game in under 2 seconds. What are you waiting for?! What is 10 dollars? Just think about all the 1s you spend over the course of a week, save up and walla. They are worth twice as much as their PSN price. You go and rent a game and it costs you 5 dollars, geesh.
As far as graphics the PSP screen makes for a better looking game. It's only 10 dollars, find out for yourself!
