Hey, folks. We're only about an hour and 10 minutes away from Sony's E3 conference. I'll be following the conference live. Keep refreshing this page for the new quick updates Sony brings and keep an eye open on the front page for Ben's full news stories on those updates. And, of course, feel free to go crazy in the comments section. Well, not too crazy.

Update 1: Conference starts in 15 mins.

Update 2: As always, Sony's conference doesn't start on time.

Update 3: I personally love how the PSP Go looks. Super thin, super light.

Update 4: No more bolding, Google Chrome is an awful browser that keeps locking up when I use HTML, and it's too late to open up Firefox. Ugh. Anyways, conference should start ANY minute.

Update 5: It has began.

Update 6: SingStar QUEEN!!! I LOVE YOU, FREDDY!

Update 7: Just a montage of upcoming PS3, PS2, and PSP games played to Queen. =)

Update 8: Tretton is on stage. Nothing important yet…

Update 9: Just announced a total of 364 games hitting PS consoles this year.

Update 10: Tretton detailing AAA games like Modern Warfare 2 and Heavy Rain obviously hitting PS3.

Update 11: Sony has no intention on axing PS2 despite 10+ year age. It'll go until people stop buying it.

Update 12: Announced over 22 million PS3's sold as of end of 2008.

Update 13: Naughty Dog's Even Wells on stage now to show off Uncharted 2.

Update 14: Multiplayer beta to go live this midnight? That was oddly worded.

Update 15: Gameplay of Uncharted 2…my God, best looking game ever! No kidding.

Update 16: Sweet Merciless Crap this game is beautiful…

Update 17: Game of the Year? Could be!

Update 18: MAG! HERE IT COMES!

Update 19: Andy from Zipper is on stage to show off M.A.G.

Update 20: We're going to see a live 256 player battle now! Holy crap!

Update 21: Wow, 256 players and the game looks pretty nice despite that. Very impressive.

Update 22: That is a lot of players on the field…wow.

Update 23: MAG will hit Fall 2009

Update 24: PSP Go about to be announced officially!

Update 25: Kaz Hirai is now up on stage. No PSP Go just yet.

Update 26: PSP Go. Bam! Announced!

Update 27: Hahaha, calls it the worst kept secret of E3.

Update 30: New application to use PS Store via PC. Called Media Go.

Update 31: New PSP app called Sense Me. Analyzes music library based on selected mood.

Update 32: UMD will exist via retail still. Sony acknowledges people still want physical product, no worries.

Update 41: Ad-hoc mode for 4 players. Trading and sharing cars.

Update 42: No infrastructure online for GT PSP? =(

Update 43: Wow, the game looks absolutley amazing!  Holy crap.

Update 44: October 1st, 2009 launch date for GT PSP.

Update 45: Kojima to come on stage to show off new Metal Gear for PSP and PS3.

Update 46: MGS: Peace Walker. 10 years after MGS3. Big Boss?

The Metroid game did look sick though!

Mario Galaxy 2! Yay… looks exactly the same as the first.

Yea Nintindo's presentation was pretty weak they really didn't show anything I would ever buy and they still haven't given me a great reason to buy one. But after the MGS disaster Sony better have an ace up their sleve to make us happy.

So sad 'bout Nintendo, they used to be so good.

I know they've got money now, but they've lost their legendary status…it really saddens me

I hope next time around Nintendo wipes Microsoft out of the picture.

Then we can have the epic battle again: Nintendo VS Sony

^That's a fight not limited to North America, Nintendo and Sony cover all regions of the world.

Success breeds complacency. Look at Intel and AMD. AMD thought they were the bee's knees with their HyperTransport based chips and AMD 64 64-bit capability. They were the enthusiast CPU of choice. Then then angered Intel – who'd become complacent due to their success. AMD started making statements that in a way were insults to Intel. AMD became complacent because of their apparent success. Now look at them, Intel's Core2 architecture was an order of magnitude better than Phenom, and now Nehalem (i7) is pulling away from Core2 in the same way that Core2 pulled away from Netburst based chips.

Companies become complacent becuase of their success. For three years now, Microsoft has been claiming to be the top dog, and Nintendo has been the top Dog, and Sony is in a position it's not used to, it's not the leader of the market in units shipped. Sony's complacency has hurt it, but it has the opportunity to awaken, and in the last 6 months it has shown that it has woken from it's slumber. Microsoft is still acting cocky and appears to have somewhat of a complacent attitude, but Nintendo just look like they are asleep at the wheel. I guess their monumental pile of cash makes very comfortable bedding – not something I can argue with. But Nintendo really does seem to be content to sit back on it's laurels and eat some peeled grapes while the gladiators fight over what it views as the scraps.

Personally I think that Nintendo needs to watch out in case the Gladiators go for more than scraps. Certainly Sony appears to be pushing games. Big, high profile AAA titles and a wide range of new IP, not to mention Home and the innovations there, as well as all those other possible music and video services through PSN.

An interesting year this. Nintendo really need to sit up and take notice, or they risk losing the ground that they gained.

Nintendo said they were the numbers 1 and 2 in IP games sold, how does that work?

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

DS and Gameboy (in all it's versions) had a hell of a lot of games, mostly pure dross, but some gems. Either way, they have a TON of games, and the Wii plays all Game Cube games does it not? And then there is the huge amount of retro gaming through their down loadable stuff, and finally all those Wii exclusive casual games that are churned out.

The thing is they could release 200 new IPs this year, sell an average of 10,000 copies of each and still lay claim to the most IPs in 2009, even if Say Sony cam with 60 IPs and sold an average of 40,000 copies per IP. Sony would have sold more units and generated far more revenue, but Nintendo could still legitimately claim more IPs than Sony.

Statistics are a science and an art. The science is the math, and the art is the presentation. A skilled analyst and presenter can cherry pick numbers from a pile of negative statistics and make (as the saying goes) a silk purse from a sow's ear.

ImInFFXIII

very true, of course what speaks for itself in the matter is the quality of the IPs, and Sony wins in straight suits

What trips me up is how Regie really does think that the best games are on the Wii.

Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid are both 2010. Probably could even been towards the end of 2010. So what's coming in 2009? Nothing came in the second half of 2008 either. INCREDIBLE.

Those shooter only Dead Space and RE games have been done to death on the Wii. I hate 'em.

Project Natal left me speechless… that level of interactivity Lionhead studios demoed is a game changer… I suspect Sony will do something similar in the future; they would never want to be left out of a revolution such as this…

…it was incredible to see…

The WII conference wasn't good, however the Resident Evil game and DeadSpace (Extraction) were not bad for a games console that is not a games console.

I am in HOME and around the Podium Stage area now if anyone is around… you should spot me…

Yo, Arnold, can you throw us a bone here? Is there something that you know that we don't that will give us some hope that SONY will steal the show after seeing both Microsoft's and Nintendo's? Just an opinionated "yes" or "no." Please.

Splinter Cell was badass and the new Raiden Metal Gear game is multi-platform. Apart from that, the rest was good but not great. Alan Wake and APB could be interesting. I am sure Crackdown 2 will be stellar but the trailer was short. Project Natal is a interesting proposition but so far Molyneux is 0/4 when he has promised to change the way we interact with video games. No Gears 3 teaser?

Microsoft's show was good but Sony is definitely in a position to steal it if they planned it right.

Qubex

It depends… I think Project Natal is a game changer… and we will only see how incredibly important this is to M$ in the next year or so…

I think Alan Wake was good too…

M$ were impressive this year!

Gotta say, despite having a pretty impressive showing yesterday from Microsoft, I didn't hear much applauding. Most of it seemed to start with Don Mattrick (?) and the crowd seemed to politely clap with him.

Tim Speed24

The audience isn't as dumb as they think. I also thought that it was "mercy" clapping for M$. Even the announcement of Metal Gear to the 360 was cricket inducing.

But at least the Xbox followers will get something new to kill their machine…the Red Ring of Raiden. That's something, I guess.

Trouble is, that Sony will no doubt be showing PS3, PSP, PSPGo, and possible(but unlikely) commenting on PS2. Microsoft just had 360 and Live network, missed Ninty's one but guessing it was just console based.

Just hope that Sony devote most of the conference on the PS3.

I think that whatever comes after the Wii (years from now) is going to be pretty amazing. They have to have the R&D money…

Anonymous

I've actually thought of that too. But then again, maybe not. They already have money now, and they still make the same games.

I seriously don't even think we'll see a new Wii for years and years to come. The users don't care about graphics. The motion plus just added like 2 more years to the console's life.
