This may fall into the bizarre "what the deuce?" category, but if it's true, we suppose it will come as good news to MMO fans everywhere. We think…

As noted by Examiner.com , the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine confirms that Square-Enix will be porting Final Fantasy XI to the PlayStation 3. It originally released for the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. Now, we have heard that the veteran RPG publisher might reveal three new titles at E3 this year, and while this doesn't exactly qualify as "new," FFXI for the PS3 might very well be one of the announcements. While we can easily recognize the big push to include online multiplayer in just about every last video game on earth these days, porting something like Final Fantasy XI to the PS3 strikes us as being a bit…well, after the fact, so-to-speak. We've got stuff like MAG and The Agency heading our way, so how many people are really going to leap online to take a shot at an old MMO? Then again, we admit to not being very familiar with the whole MMO culture so perhaps we haven't the slightest idea what we're talking about, and that's a distinct possibility. But let's just say this isn't the announcement we want from Square-Enix at E3; we want something bad-ass, like Kingdom Hearts III .

But either way, we'll bring you the news as it happens. It kinda what we do.

What a waste of time and resource. If Square-Enix has the time to do something like this, they should spend their efforts in finishing current projects or work on remakes, rather than a port.

Well, I'm kind of offended of how you take lack of excitement in this, or at least try not to make it sound so dull. I have actually been waiting since the ps3's release to get news on this. My ps2's hard drive failed so i couldn't play it and the computer made me make another profile. Now I can finally make a perminant account on my PS3, so I am very happy.

I thought you could use your PS2 disc to put it on the PS3 HDD after they released that patch.

I haven't tried, so I'm not sure.

p.s. After reading later comments, I realized that you might not have a backwards-compatible system. I guess I always assume the people here were early-adopters like myself.

Oh no …no no no. I played this game for about 3 years straight it is the best experience i've ever had with a video game. I finally was able to get away with it leaving all my friends and accomplishments behind. Now …now they do this? I wanted this a looong time ago since the 360 got updated visuals and the ps2 (which i played on) was so-so. Oh man …part of me can't wait to get back into it, and the other part of me hopes that The Agency, DCU or even Free Realms will make me stay away from FFXI

If you play a MMO for 3 years straight, you have no friends to leave behind. 😉

I've been toying around on getting the PS2 ver. and play it on my PS3(I has meh a 60GB model), but if this is true, then I guess I'll get this version.

I can finailly put my 500GB HDD to some good use besides movies and music. O.O 😀

trust me, this is something that FFXI users have been waiting for for a VERY long time. as it is right now, the only way to play ffxi in HD resolution is if you own an Xbox 360.

@Swavey come on now, I still talk to a few of those people daily. They just keep telling me what I'm missing lol But it's a very long process to get anywhere in that game, the entire game is based on making friends and people helping you, that's the only downside (and it's a big one) with the gameplay.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I'll be passing on the "make friends to progress" gameplay then.

Actually I'm sort of glad – I mean I heard from most people that it's of course not your typical Final Fantasy…but I just sort of want it since it's an online game. I would love to play an MMORPG on my PS3 when I get it. I would have gotten it for PS2…but I don't have the network adapter thing so yea…but wi-fi I do have.

God I really need to get my PS3…

really? SE? really? after 7 years of this game being out, now all of a sudden you decide you wanna port it to the ps3?

It would be nice if it were a one-player story mode type of Final Fantasy. I was miffed when I couldn't play the PS2 version on my slim, and didn't want to pay a subscription fee (was to much for me). It's upsetting that on my shelf of FF games I see V, VI, VII, VIII IX, X, and XII.

If they did would we have to pay monthly fees for it?

My friend told me FFXI ruined his life for several months so, as uninteresting as it seem to me, it might actually have a tremendous appeal to some gamers, especially if they beef it up.

Wow… This is… This is just a horrible waste of resources! Drop this! It will not do very well! Get these people that are porting XI over to porting XIII!

SE, you have priorities! And right now FFXIII should be your highest one!

FF XI was the only MMO I've ever played. I loved it, but the monthly fee and time investment ultimately turned me off.

I just looked at there site. The PS2, PC, and 360 version are all $12.95 a month. It's pretty safe to assume that the PS3 version would be the same.

i did the beta for this game on PS2 and played this for 2 years straight non-stop playing. after that i just got tired of it, plus a lot of my friends had stopped.

i just can't see why they would port this now. does FFXI still have that many people playing it? i doubt they still have the 30+ servers they did back in the day.

Wasn't FFXI originally released on PS2 and PC and then later ported to Xbox 360?

Anyway, I hated the game and went to WoW, so this isn't good news at all if this is going to be one of the "big" announcements at E3. Personally, I'd love to see the first MMORPG on the PS3 be the secret next-gen project that Blizzard is working on but I'm pretty sure that's just a "final" fantasy…sorry for the pun…I know it sucked. 🙂

Why instead of PORTING a Final Fantasy game, maybe, just maybe, REMAKE another one, like you know, Final Fantasy VII? please SqueEnix? pretty pretty please?

I guess It would make them at least twice the money this would, so why not VII?

One word, one question.

Why?

Why distract your resources by porting FFXI when your new games are slipping?

Oh and releasing FFVII and FFVIII on PSN globally couldn't hurt anyone. Nor could doing a reworking of FFVII on the PS3. I mean, crap. As 'darxed' says, if you're going to spend time porting an older game onto the PS3, what better candidate is there than FFVII (FFVIII wouldn;t hurt either…)

From what I am hearing, the rumor is that it's a NEW MMO that SE is talking about releasing on just the PS3 and PC. Also, nothing is saying that it's an MMORPG just yet, so… who knows what this could turn out to be.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME SE??!!

If they think for one minute that I'm going to fork out 50 bux for a game that came out ages ago and then pay them another 130 to play it for ONE year, they are sadly, SADLY mistaken.

Oh, and explain to me how this game would have the mandatory trophies. Or does MMOs not qualify for that?
