We didn't want to get your hopes up with a misleading headline: this clearly isn't the hardware price cut we've all been waiting for, but it is curious…

As PS3Center pointed out, Amazon.com has dropped the price on both the 80GB PS3 and 160GB PS3 bundle; the former falls $10 to $389 and the latter drops $20 to $479. Why? …we honestly have no idea. This appears to be a worldwide occurrence, too, as both Amazon Japan and Amazon UK have also dropped their PS3 prices by the same amounts. Even though it's a miniature price cut, it has gotten everyone talking: what's the point of doing this? Does it have anything to do with timing? Could it somehow tie into an official price drop announcement at E3? Or is this just a way of saying, "yeah, you won't be getting a $50 or $100 drop, so we'll try to soften the disappointing blow." Then again, it may mean nothing at all; it could be an Amazon-centric sale, although the new price points could very well be permanent. We love speculation and controversy just as much as the next guy, but perhaps it's asking too much to read something into $10 and $20 price drops. At the same time, any price alteration on the PS3 is going to get attention, even if we're only talking about a minimal adjustment.

If you want, you can check out the freshly slashed PS3 and come to a conclusion for yourself. If it's nothing, it's nothing. But…

Amazon always does their own thing, like price cuts and different bundles, but it's something a little helps.

Newegg has this same deal, but their price drop has been going on since December.

With game consoles, price cuts like this are always sanctioned by the manufacturer. They control the price of the hardware very strictly. The margins on the consoles themselves are so very thin for retailers they have zero incentive to offer price cuts themselves. Sony has to be driving this from behind the scenes by offering these retailers a lower wholesale cost per unit. There may not be an official policy or request, but there is an understanding.

I love it when Sony starts switching up the bundling so that the price points are covered by bundles that when un-bundled would have the console itself selling for $50 or more less. It always indicates room for a price reduction of the core system itself.

Additional deal for those in Canada:

Future Shop is currently throwing in Uncharted and Hot Shots Golf on the 80 Gb system for $399.
