The Tony Hawk franchise is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed in video game history, and it comes as no surprise to anyone that another installment is on the way.

But in this new generation of special interactivity, pioneered by the music genre with the likes of plastic instruments for Guitar Hero and Rock Band , gamers expect more out of their virtual experiences. Therefore, in addition to the official announcement of Tony Hawk: Ride , Activision will release an "innovative motion sensing skateboard controller, allowing for unprecedented freedom and movement." Tony Hawk himself said, "this is the game I've always wanted to make," and we can certainly understand that sentiment. It's a wireless skateboard that uses "a combination of accelerometers and motion sensors," and obviously, the most unique aspect about it is that it quite clearly isn't for your hands. Nope, you jump on this bad boy as you most certainly should. Said Rob Kostich, head of marketing for global brand management at Activision:

"Tony Hawk: RIDE is a massive step forward for the franchise and the gaming industry as a whole. The skateboard controller will redefine sports games by offering players a true skateboarding experience, hands-free, playing with friends and family at home or online in a variety of different locations."

You can learn more about Ride over at the official site , which also includes a promotional video for the unit in question. The game is being developed by Robomodo and is scheduled to arrive for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time later this year, and just for the record, Buzz Monkey is working on the Wii version.

Slight correction suggestion: I think the date on the website reflects the date of E3 and the unveiling of the game there, as there is no listing on Gamestop, etc. for a release date of the actual game.

What!?? June!? I thought they were going for a holiday release like they use to with Tony Hawk (except for last year).

I wonder how it's going to recognize forward motion. I guess I should head over to the main site…

I don't get how you would use the buttons if you stand on it.

The buttons are probably for navigating through the menus when you're not actually playing the game.

Ah, gotcha. I just watched the video on GT and saw them not using the buttons.

I think this would be what you call "jumping the shark". I really loved Tony Hawk when it first came out on PSX, and I even got into the PS2 version, but been there, done that. I don't see this new controller taking the series in the right direction.

Oh FFS. If they are going to take it this route. Why don't people just go outside and actually Skate? Like on a real Skateboard?

You know what? If I tried playing on that thing chances are i'd break it like in about 10 mins. That is, if I don't manage to but my ass on it before then.

Anybody has any idea how much it costs?

And no offence but i think it's useless buying this virtual skateboard for a price of a videogame or more (that's what i expect it to cost) just so you can play it with only 1 game….

It still wont match Skate no matter what it does. Tony Hawk as gone down hill since Project 8 IMO. It just hasn't been innovative except for that slow-mo thingy.

There is nothing new about this except for the fact that I can go to Dave and Busters and play this game. The only thing now is that you can take it home with you now!

Well, I envision a huge secondary cost to this skatemote….

Having to buy a large retangular trash container just after you've shot your board right into that 52inch HDTV.

Yeah, this seems like it could actually be a little bit more dangerous than plastic guitars or a balance board.
