Sometimes, it takes a while for certain Japanese developers to graduate to a new generation, especially when it comes to designers who specialize in JRPGs.

But we're starting to see more announcements for the PlayStation 3; for instance, we fully expect to see Nippon Ichi's new exclusive PS3 RPG unveiled later today (unless this is it, right here). A PS3 role-playing title has been discovered in the latest Famitsu edition, as pictured above, and a few sources have been trying to translate some of the information. Apparently, the game is called Trinity Universe and it's a joint venture between three JRPG kingpins: Idea Factory, Gust, and Nippon Ichi Software; hence, the "Trinity," we're guessing. As far as we can tell, it's not a 2D sprite-based graphical presentation, but a 3D dungeon crawler with two separate storylines featuring the Goddess and Devil King respectively. Gust took care of the Goddess plot and Nippon Ichi handled the Devil King, although the official developer for the game is listed as Idea Factory. The article further states that the team(s) are approximately 60% of the way through the design process, and the game has an estimated August release date in Japan. No word on when – or even if – it'll launch in other regions.

Well, we'd like to assume it's coming here at some point, and we're certainly interested to learn more about this three-pronged JRPG effort. If this is NIS's announcement, then Trinity Universe is definitely coming to the U.S. If not…well, we'll keep you updated either way.

The pics in the image remind me of Cross Edge (or what I have seen of it on the web)

Looks garbage, Cutscenes with cartoon character stills with text underneath should exstinct, come on the ps3 can do better than that.

I think it is an art style. Why kill something that works??? Part of the reason companies like Atlus are so reluctant to develop on PS3 is because people are so gung-ho about the graphics capability. Disgaea 3 was awesome and it's graphics weren't great, Persona 3 was awesome and it didn't have great graphics.

One thing that I loved about the PS2 is that there were always different art styles in games that would make up for the limitations on the hardware. You had your MGS's awesome (at the time) graphics and you had Okami a very artistic different approach. If all games HAVE to have standards just because of what system they are running on then this industry has lost it's art sense and will soon become like the movie industry. A complete void of originality.

My point is. Take these games for what they are. I will personally be sad when more of these kinds of traditions pass away. I hope they don't.

On the other side… They better not exploit the traditional stuff just to keep budget down and still charge 60$ a game.

@FatCat

Exactly, it's an art style. Personally I love the more anime styled presentation of games. For me there is a limit to the realism that is needed in some genre of game, and when it comes to JRPGs in particular, anime styling is far more preferable when compared to the more realistic, some might say Western, art style.

Besides, you can never have enough fan service…. 😉

FU WorldEnds…

Anyway call it art style or what you like. i still feel its dated, with the PS3s standard of graphics face detail/anitmation is expected on the characater model.

@Ultimadream

"i still feel its dated, with the PS3s standard of graphics face detail/anitmation is expected on the characater model."

How can it be dated? If you look at any anime on BluRay it's the same. Better technology improves the clarity of the image, but does not alter the art style of the anime image itself.

If you took an anime art style and added realistic detail and lots more animation to the image, it wold no longer be anime style, it would be something else. It's fine that you don't personally like anime style, but that does not make it dated.

Your argument is the same as looking at an oil painting and dismissing it because it's not a photograph. The technology has advanced, so why would anyone do a portrait in oils when a digital photo will be far more detailed and life like? The answer of course is that it's not about the realism, it's the art style.

I'm not saying they should be 3D graphics, for the style it can be like Anime, but the 'anime characters' should have face animatons and shouldnt have to rely on the image above the text to convey expression.

Its what old RPGs needed becuase at the time it wasnt possible to go into detail on expressions, though by todays standards you can, so theres no need for the portait shot image above the text, it just gets in the way if anything.

When or if it makes it to other regions…

Isn't it starting to sound like the whole Microsoft timed exclusives for games coming out of the East? I mean this, FFXIII, Demon's Souls, Aquanauts Dream, Yakuza 3, White Knight Chronicles, I am sure there are a ton more.

It just kind of feels like the West is being shafted a bit, and that makes me a sad panda. 🙁

TheHighlander

White Knight Chronicles has nothing to do with Microsoft, it's a PS3 exclusive. As is Yakuza3 as far as I know. What have either of these got to do with Microsoft and timed exclusivity?

coverton341

No I mean in comparison to the Microsoft timed exclusivity deals does it feel like the same thing is happening to the games coming from the East. Not that Microsoft has anything to do with it but it feels like we in the West are getting the short end of the stick in relation to Eastern games as well as multiplat games.

Ah, I understand now. My apologies, I thought you were suggesting this was somehow related to MS directly. The delay in games coming from Japan is not new though, just like the delay we used to have (and sometimes still do have) when it came to new gaming hardware being launched in Japan earlier.

60% and they want to release in august? that worries me, but you never know they could just be way more efficient than square anus, either way I'll be keeping an eye on this. I hope NIS has another announcement though because that would mean a whole nother RPG 🙂

coverton341
coverton341

Well World, they can probably hit that date at 60% now because the level of animation detail is askew of what we are seeing in other games. I mean FFXIII is very detailed and realistic. Cross Edge looks more like an interactive anime. That is not to say that it is worse because it looks awesome from everything I have seen, just that it will probably take way less time to finish and polish

TheHighlander

If the game uses a well rounded game engine that needs little to no work for release, then there is no reason this could not be the case. It's only when you have to rework the whole game engine that you have an issue.

TheHighlander

@worlds,

The image wasn't that clear, so I couldn't see the character models either.

We don't know when the interview was conducted, it could easily have been during March or April in which case there could be anything from three to 5 months of time left for the game to still achieve an August time frame. That said, I was pretty surprised that they were talking about an August release and at the same time saying that they were still only 60% through the design process. Still if their game building tools are mature enough, and the graphics of the game are anime style 3D models, then it's conceivable that they could pull the game together very quickly, assuming that the game doesn't feature tons of voicing. With 3D anime/cartoon character models, the game engine can render an awful lot of what happens based purely on scripting. This could leave the game designers a lot more time to concentrate on other aspects of the game.

If you look at games like Soul Calibur 4 and the way in which you can move the characters around in real time, you can immediately see that if character movement and interaction were animated and rendered in real time – similar to machinima – you can afford to spend less time on your game engine and character animation/rendering, and more time on the remainder of the game. Assuming of course that your basic game engine is this mature.

While I enjoy the anime art direction of these type of games (I bought Disgaea 3 too) I have to agree with Ultimadream.These companies could build better games technically.The gameplay as well as the engine are outdated and there is no excuse for that.Valkyria Chronicles,Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia all keep that art style,but fit fine into this generation.A game designed like Cross Edge is just ridiculous.Making games that take advantage of the PS3 has more to do with gameplay and game engine than it does with "realistic" graphics.

well, hope this one turns out good, cuz so far we have not really seen any must-buy JRPGs this generation. Honestly, western RPGs such as Oblivion, Mass Effect, and Fallout 3 are much better. But I also believe that once FFXIII comes out it will be on par with western RPGs! So what I am saying is that JRPGs as a whole still has the chance to compete with the west.
