Konami Drops Six Days In Fallujah

Sometimes, outside pressure is just too much, and a publisher opts to avoid the limelight tinged with red…

According to DarkZero , Konami has announced they're backing out of publishing Atomic Games' controversial shooter, Six Days in Fallujah . The game is the brainchild of several U.S. Marines who fought in that deadly battle overseas back in 2004. However, since the time it was unveiled (less than a month ago), there has been a very vocal opposition to the title's production; military families led the charge as they felt it would dishonor the real soldiers who lost their lives. The conflict is that real soldiers are the ones who devised this project in the first place, and let's remember that time heals all wounds…perhaps in ten years, nobody will have a problem with it, as nobody currently does with entertainment products based on World War II or Vietnam. But even so, the outcry hit Konami hard, and they've opted to pull out. Said a spokesperson for the publisher:

"After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it. We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there."

This doesn't mean the game won't ever see the light of day, but Atomic now needs to find another publisher. Six Days in Fallujah was scheduled to arrive some time next year, but now, the developer needs to find a publishing partner brave enough to withstand the criticism. For Konami, it wasn't worth the risk, but there are plenty of other publishers out there…

its a shame really, people can take fictional Shooters as no big deal but as soon as it hits modern issues we get complains, This sounded like a huge step for games to mature.

This is a real shame. Yes this is a touchy subject but so was "Black Hawk Down" and they made a film on that.

I was Field Artillery (13F) in the Army for 3 years and have had a taste of hell. I think it is good for gamers to see through the eyes of the soldiers who are injured and those that die in the line of duty and allow us to enjoy the freedom that so many just take for granted.

Bring it on, I want to play it.

Military families do not have a monopoly on this war, just as 9/11 families did not have a monopoly on terrorism and tragedy. If this game was born from the minds of soldiers who participated, who are they to tell them what to do. They are probably jealous that their family isn't profiting from it. I was impressed with what little a saw of this game. Bring it on!

Bah, it doesn't matter what you do, unless it's a completely fictional piece of work with no real world ties, you're always going to offend someone somewhere.

Granted, it's a touchy subject, but if it's a good enough game it'll weather the storm of controversy and come out on top. I say lets have it.

Remember, the men who envisioned this game wanted it to honour the fallen soldiers and give us all a perspective of just what it is they really go through out there, for us. Be proud, not offended.

I think Konami made the right move. Ironically whilst families of some of the American soldiers voiced opposition I don't think alot of people realize that it was even more offensive to Iraqi's, esp the many that lost innocent family members during this battle. I'm not vindicating one side or another but honestly the developers could've chosen pretty much any other battle or territory in Iraq to market a game on as Fallujah is really the one incident that even American military advisors admitted 'mistakes were made'. If anyone's actually familiar with the historical record of that battle, and there's plenty of accurate documentaries and movies out there, it wasn't exactly the Marines finest hour. Why not an Abu Gharib, prisoner stacking game next?

This really is too bad, but hey I guess if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. They will be sorry if it finds another publisher and does very well. I'm against censorship of any kind. If you disagree with it or don't like it, don't play it/watch it/listen to it/let your kids have it. I honestly don't think anyone intended to exploit this battle by making this game. Hell, proceeds could even go to the families of the fallen or to wounded veterans.

It may be too soon but its best that these young men get the story out now while its still fresh in thier heads and they can remember the details. This is obviously their therapy and a way for them to honor their fallen brohers. I hope some publisher has the balls to realease this project in time.

It's lame that Konami won't publish this title. I'm sure they anticipated that they would be criticized for releasing it, so now they just look like wimps.

However, I think people that compare video games with movies as if they're the same thing are a little naive. Films generally have an easier time dealing with complex issues and not taking sides, where as in this game, that didn't seem to be possible.

I would like to see a game where you could play as either side, and each side would have its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the marines would obviously have heavier fire power, air support, night vision goggles etc. and the insurgents could have detailed maps of the battleground, better positioning, the element of surprise and they would be able to use flocks of pigeons to signal troop movements (they actually do this).

That might make the game more dynamic but I'm sure people would still hate on it. I'm betting we will see this game published by another company.

WorldEndsWithMe, its not censorship, its PR. (i do generally dig your posts though.

I am a military guy who has been shot at and had mortars fired at him, I don't see the problem with this game. Easy solution, just change the name and release it a few months after it was supposed to come out the first time. TV shows do this kind of stuff all the time. Just add the typical disclaimer.

"This game does not reflect any real individuals or any real events".

"let's remember that time heals all wounds…perhaps in ten years, nobody will have a problem with it, as nobody currently does with entertainment products based on World War II or Vietnam."

So true. Why should it be ok to make games on other wars and not this one? COD4 was set in middle east, why shouldn't this? And the families wern't the ones fighting the war, so why should their opinions be louder then the marines who were there and want this game to happen?

I wonder if the use of WP will come up in this game.
