The new generation and its duo of powerful consoles represents many possibilities for developers, and Volition says they simply couldn't have produced anything like Red Faction: Guerilla if it weren't for this awesome hardware potential.

According to a Strategy Informer interview with Guerilla Associate Producer Sam Kennedy, the GeoMod 2.0 tech is "three to five years" ahead of the standard curve and ideas like terraforming are outdated. In fact, when they asked Kennedy about Fracture (a game that let you alter the environment), he laughed and said, "Ha, Fracture! You can actually put that in your article!" He goes onto explain how GeoMod 1.0 was about terrain deformation, but they wanted to do so much more, which is why they had to wait for the new generation of consoles. These machines "really had enough power to do exactly what we wanted, which was real destruction that’s realistic, physics-based and something no-one’s ever seen before." The bottom line is that Kennedy and Co. didn't want to create another Red Faction that felt similar but only had a glossy next-gen sheen. Therefore, they did something special and the early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Finished Kennedy:

"And even the reaction from the industry itself, like at the recent GDC where we gave talks, they were like, ‘you have achieved something that we couldn’t even come close to!’ From top people in the industry, it’s a huge compliment. It’s when you know you’ve done something right. You see the look on gamers' faces, but when you see the look on (the faces of) people who also make games it’s pretty satisfying."

We've said it before and we'll say it again: it's a bad idea to sleep on Red Faction: Guerilla , because this could easily be one of the best games of 2009 to date. From what we've seen, it might even be our most anticipated game of the month of June, and that includes inFamous

truly, the trey station fan club must be stopped…

seriously??? Who refers to the ps3 as "Trey!!"

on another note, i've played the demo, and it's great!!! i've completely went nutz on it and wrecked every building and wall i could find… then hopped into a mech and flattened so many soldiers 😛

i ddn't wanna pick it up cuz of the fps/tps switch, but the demo completely won me over…

Better than Killzone 2?

No. The game still has that you can only blow up what we want to feel about it.

This was the same feeling I got when I played Red Faction 2.

In Red Faction 1, I felt like I could dig a hole to other side of Mars. Even on that Multiplayer map (forgot the name) you could dig tunnels in the map to get to the other bases if you wished. After playing the demo, I found that the only thing you could do was blow up buildings, fence's, etc., while the surrounding area was indestructable.

Plus, I am not a fan of switch from FPS to Third person either.

It depends on what kind of gameplay you like, some people might like it better than Killzone 2. I dont know if RF:G can even be classified as a TPS based on the open world like GTA and the amazing destruction element.

What do you think Ben?

I don't think we can compare two games when one isn't out yet. 😉

The demo is fun, but it seems as though all the levels are going to be pretty much the same, as well as the mission objectives which does get utterly monotanous.

I didn't like the demo that much though, and I felt that the building destruction looked fake and cheesy. I may give it another chance but I wasn't that impressed by it.

Yet they left out environmental destruction. The single greatest thing about the first game.

Yes sir. Buildings, vehicles, and fences only make this game feel like Mercenaries to me.

I should be able to tunnel around anything.

It's what I loved about the first one, and hated about the 2nd.

I initially disliked the demo on the first go. It just felt like another Fallout 3 kind game with better graphics. But then after going through the demo and simply destroying everything in the path it's simply feels awesome.
They weren't kidding about total destruction. If only the game turns out not to be repetitive, then it might be awesome.

I agree, the destruction looks fake sometimes, but at least it's better than having just walls which don't get a dent even when blown up.
Also, the frame rates remain solid even when you plough through the buildings… really good.

I would wait for a review, but unless it turns out to be as crap as Haze, I will probably buy it. I am currently playing the demo for the fifth time and the destruction isn't getting old which is a good sign. Hopefully this turns out to be really special as my hopes are high.

I was looking forward this game, but after the demo. I just simply cant waste 60$ on it. Game looks awful. It feels pretty cheap, even the destruction hasnt that OMG feel on it. I'm disappointed. Gameplay-wise is a mess, you are suppose to tap L2 in order to get cover, but most of the time it doesnt work securing a rapid death for you.

There is not denying that blowing up stuff can be fun, but is that all? I dont know, perhaps when game hits the bargain bin and I get some free time on hands, Ill give it a try.

These comments I'm reading doesn't look good for THQ. I played the demo also and it felt mediocre at best. Reminded me of Fracture.

Can't spend my $60 on this one….pass.

The engine is not bad guys… it runs smoothly in 1080p… and the destructibility is pretty cool, no?

Q!

@Q

It's true. Game runs smooth at 1080p. I wasnt expecting that, but why to go 1080p when you dont get a good looking game. 720p is the common resolution for games, specially multiplats. Perhaps at 720p game could save some resources to do AntiAliasing and use better textures. Well , Idk maybe Im just spoiled by KZ2 graphics.

I tried to liked it, but then the cover problem put me off. Im gonna wait for some reviews.

I was surprised to see my TV stay in 1080p mode when I ran the demo…nice to see devs actually going full HD, but 720p is acceptable if it helps w/ better graphics (smoother framerate, better AA, etc.).

BTW, from online info, it looks like the 360 version is only 720p.

Well the demo is very short, but it does it's job: makes me think the actual finished game will be awesome.

The demo is awesome. Too bad its got a timer on it so you can't enjoy it without feeling rushed. This game along inFamous and Prototype are a must buy for me. I don't see how next gen is only graphics because that's what a lot of gamers on this site among others complain about. The graphics suck…more to a game than just graphics people! Innovation?!?
