We'll never understand why people want to make complete and utter fools of themselves, but karaoke remains a worldwide phenomenon that puts a microphone in the hands of anyone who's willing.

Well, if you're one of those willing brave souls, you'll be happy to know that Konami has announced Karaoke Revolution , developed by Blitz Games, for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. It's not to be confused with a game of the same name that's currently available for the PS2; this new title will feature 50 master recordings, a deeper character creator, and customizable venues. And although we don't have any details just yet, Konami is planning downloadable content for the game, which should start to arrive soon after the launch. We'll also get a "party-centric playlist" and a duet mode that will be playable both online and offline. Revolution is set to release some time this fall and when Konami comes forward with a solid date, we'll let you know about it. Music fans ought to be intrigued; we've got all the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles, but as far as karaoke fans are concerned, we're a little thin on singing-based games. Of course, titles like SingStar are hugely popular in Europe even if they never really caught on over here.

So who's willing to tune up their vocals? You know, in a few years time, we wouldn't be surprised if the new American Idol attributes his or her win to some karaoke-based video game.

I wonder how well this game will sell on the different consoles. Since Sony has Singstar, arguably the most popular karaoke style game, I suspect this will do better on the Wii (where the competition is near non-existent) or on the 360 where Lips is just disgraceful.

Until they release a version that offers up Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, The Doors, The Flying Burrito Brothers, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Tinsley Ellis, Sly & The Family Stone, Albert King, Atmosphere, Louis Jordan and Janis Joplin, no Karaoke games will enter my house.

Why has Singstar not caught on in NA? It's actually a really good game, and a lot of fun to play.

I think it's a chicken and egg situation, people in NA are waiting for Singstar tracks that more closely match local tastes, and Sony London Studios is waiting for Sales in the US to justify the additional effort on tracks for the US market.

That said, SingStar Queen hit's this spring, and who can resist being able to karaoke along to Bohemian Rhapsody?

If they would thrown some Elvis tracks at Singstar it couldn't hurt. Not sure that The Doors will work, they're darned near unintelligible. Have a look at the last 50 years of the Billboard and pull every artist with 5 or more US number 1 hits, that's the list that they need to work on, and none of those you mention are on that list.

Sly had 3 #1 hits but I digress. They had multiple singers so it wouldn't work. Sadly, that list of people who have 5 or more #1 hits who did all the vocals would consist of Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Elton John and Usher (The Beatles aren't going to be in the game anyway due to their Rock Band deal); besides, nobody is going to get a high rating singing Mariah's stuff, as lame as it is. She had one of the most powerful voices in her prime.

Indeed, though even if you simply say 'artists with more than 1 number 1 Billboard hit', it's still a limited population.

BTW the list (5 or more #1s) is;

Paula Abdul, The Beatles, The BeeGees, Beyonce, Pat Boone, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, The Eagles, The Four Seasons, Hall and Oates, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Elton John, KC and the Sunshine Band, Madonna, George Michael, Olivia Newton-John, Elvis Presley, Prince (the artist formerly and again known as…), P. Diddy, Lionel Richie, Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, Dianna Ross, Barbara Steisand, The Supremes, Usher, Wings, and of course Stevie Wonder.

If you add in anyone with 2 or more #1s in the last decade you throw in a bunch more – with the benefit of them being contemporary.

No one can tell me that artists and tracks drawn from such a list would be unpopular.

The fact that someone with very little talent like Rihanna has 5 #1 hits shows you why I stopped listening to the radio long ago. It's all about T&A and flaunting it now. She's just a hot chick and nothing more. Everyone does all the work for her in regards to writing and producing and she just sings the finished work and all these desperate males who have never been kissed and the females who emulate her buy into it. Sad that some people have an easy road to success.

I'm off-topic. No more.
