Game Informer: MAG Is A FPS

As time wears on, Sony's ambitious and innovative MMO, MAG , continues to rise on the radar of gamers and game journalists alike. But we're still a little thin on details; we can't even confirm the picture you see here is real, and so far, SCEA has only clarified that it won't be an iteration of the SOCOM franchise (that idea was based on a misinterpretation of a quote by SCEA boss John Koller).

But it appears we'll get a big unveiling in the new Game Informer, and wonder of wonders, it seems that MAG will be a…FPS? Or, if that's not entirely accurate, it seems as if it'll be viewed from a first-person perspective. A PlayStation forum member posted up this evidence a little while ago, and it's a few zoomed-in pages from the magazine in question. As you can see, "FPS" is included in that detailed description – which we can't wait to read more about – and this is bound to raise a few eyebrows. We haven't seen any gameplay videos for the game; when it was unveiled at E3 last year, we only saw a teaser trailer that didn't show off any real footage. And up to this point, most people were assuming the game would be in standard third-person format, similar to something like SOCOM . But it seems Sony is going another way with this promising title, and if we step back and take a look at the entire project, it may be the ideal plan. A first-person view with 256 players on the map at once…? Can you say intense ?  Don't drool all over the keyboard…

The more we see and hear about MAG , the more intrigued we become. There's just so much in the way of opportunity and possibility; it's almost mind-boggling, so we'll certainly keep you updated on any and all new developments.

Game Informer claims it will be 30fps, and they also say it is in first person. The article is really good and gives tons of info.

Im not too excited about this game. Not much are known here other than the video at E3. There aren't any gameplay video of the game yet. I hope the visual quality doesn't take a hit because of the number of players on screen

They would need awesome optimisation routines playing off here to keep the visual standards of Killzone 2 and the 256 multi-player avatars all dueling it out on screen simultaneously.

I think KZ2 has raised the bar so high, even Sony themselves – or at least other Sony studios will find it hard to beat. Grant it though, GoWIII and Unchartered II will be up there…

So its all video game goodness in the next few months… looking forward to it all.

Jury still out on MAG though… we'll have to see it to believe it.

How many FPSs do we need?

First party FPSs at that
Isn't Resistance enough?

I mean I don't mind Killzone2, but now MAG too?
Wow this generation is actually starting to sadden me in some respects

We need more realistic FPS scarecrow, all we have save for Rainbow 6 is nothing in terms of realistic and contemporary timeline shooters. Bring it on, im buying it.

If you don't like it thats cool, but don't ruin the party for guys/girls like us.

Well, that's as may be, but of all the game genre, fps is the most over services this generation by an order of magnitude.

The big thing about MAG (no pun intended) is the massive multi-player battles. It will be interesting to see (in future) whether that same platform can be used in any other gaming genre besides FPS.

Here we go again………..

Just when I was happy with Sony having variety in their console….

So I should pass on Killzone2 and get MAG instead?

The fact that they are the same type of game should have no bearing. MAG and Killzone 2 are completetly different. MAG appears to be 100% online, and involves warfare that appears to take place on modern-day earth. Hell, I'd call it a massive purely online form of COD:MW

I'm not the biggest FPSs fan, so I gotta decide on one or the other.

If I can get a nice connection to play it on it'll be great. Wouldn't have it any other way than FPS. I can't help but thinking, wouldn't you feel bad if you were the first person to die with 255 other players on the map?

Zipper Interactive every SOCOM game except Tactical Strike on PSP and Confrontation on PS3 (those were done by Slant6). They were rumored to be working on the first "full" Socom game for PS3 but they're working on MAG now instead.

Yeah how disappointing. I'd have much prefered a new full socom game by Zipper but ah well. MAG might be just as good, if not better. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

I'm very interested in reading this article and finding out more about this game. This is an exclusive that has been under the radar for me. I wonder when it will be released?

I'm still not sure if this is going to be really amazing or disappointing like SOCOM confrontation. I have high hopes though; there are so many great exclusives this year that having another hit would be great for the ps3!

Pffft wow What's everyone's obsession with KZ2? I finished the game on Hard and I got to the highest rank online and I haven't uoched it since. It's a good game but not SO good that you're still going to be playing it next christmas.

MAG is a FPS, so most of you KZ2 lovers aren't going to get it because "it satisfies your FPS" needs? Have a little variation please. I'm sure you'll all say the same about Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare 2.

I don't think we will be seeing any pay to play games online this generation for the ps3. I think Sony wants to keep it free as possible right now.

I'm very curious about this game, graphics from what i've seen from the pictures look great. But i agree with bugzbunny109 if i have to pay to play i won't be picking it up i just can't justify paying at this time for a game online it's bad enough i do it for my husband WOW account.

I'd rather pay for PSN than get an inferior service which they provide. It's all fine when you live in America, Japan or UK but some countries don't have 8MB+ average speeds. XBL is a lot more stable and has less lag.

Odd, I could have sworn this game would be third-person. We shall see how this game unfolds. Nice ISA Sniper action MadKat.

I have had the idea of having a whole whack of people in FPS games at once
like on counter strike source you can do something to make the player limit higher and i love 64men servers on large custom maps

this will be great IMO, sounds like a very solid idea, but i hope theres party options so you and your group of friends can always be a group or soemthing

please add in that kind of stuff guys, not enough games support this kind of ease of access

Don't know if anyone mentioned this but how often will the full 256 players capacity be reached?… it's not too often I find a full game online, though I still havent played KZ2 so maybe that can be part of the problem.

It's first person because Zipper wanted this game to be immersive. The SOCOM games are third person to help with the squad mechanics.

Anyway, Zipper has a whole lot of awesome ideas for this game, so best of luck to them. (Game Informer article is a strongly recommend read)

I wonder of there will be a commander role, someone who gives instructions to others while overlooking the battle field. I can't wait to try this game out! It's like the first ever MMOFPS!

LowKii

The biggest question here is not how many players will be online, or how fast it will run with over 200 players on 1 map. The question is are they goin to make it Pay to play? as Zipper is thinking about it. If so that will be a major killer to the title, The whole reason people play PS3 online is because they're like me, and only want to have to pay for a game one and experience it, not have to pay monthly to expierience a game that we have already paid for. and as for KZ2, I don't understand what the hype is all about, how can you play an FPS when it takes 2 friggin hours to turn left to shoot someone. seriously!!! i was actually pretty excited about KZ2 until I played it. The slow turning killed it for me. anyone wanna explain why it the turnig in KZ2 is soooo slow?
