Eidos: Batman: Arkham Asylum Is “One Of Our Best Games Ever”

For the most part, superhero games have only managed to be "good" and not "great" in the past. But we may get something very special when Batman: Arkham Asylum releases in June (yep, another potentially hot June title).

According to MCVUK , Eidos says that Batman will be one of the biggest productions of 2009 and moreover, it will "set a new benchmark for licensed video games." As the article points out, this is yet another bold claim from a publisher; you may recall Activision's statement saying that Modern Warfare 2 will be the "#1 entertainment property" of the year. But despite the perceived rashness of such claims, from what we've seen of Arkham Asylum , we're almost ready to believe Eidos. Said head of UK marketing Jon Brooke:

"We expect Batman Arkham Asylum to not only be the biggest game of the summer but one of the stand-out games of the year. It’s as close to perfect as we’ve ever come, it looks amazing, plays beautifully and has a rich twisting storyline with enormous replayability. I’m confident enough to say that it will set a new benchmark for licensed games and it’s going to establish itself as one of our best games ever."

…if that's not confidence, we don't know what is. Brooke also went on to say that they've got some serious advertising and marketing lined up to push the game, and it'll run for about four months. He says it's their "biggest campaign of the year" and they're definitely going to "make some noise." Well, we don't mind that. If you haven't done so already, check out the latest video for the game; the Invisible Predator Trailer . As you can see, this title really does have a ton of potential, and those of you waiting for Infamous – which releases right around the same time – may be faced with a tough decision…

I haven't really gotten into a Superhero game since the original Batman for the NES.

I know, I am lame.

Maximum Carnage was pretty good for the Genesis, that is if you could beat the bosses without causing damage to the game, system, yourself and others out of frustration. It was just that good (at least to me). The PSone Spiderman games weren't bad either (if you're not the kind of person who keeps his PSone in "the box it came in" inside your closet just so you can use that double card that doesn't fit in a PS2, you can get 'em for the N64)

Just like the comment on CoDMW2, they're stuck up there arse i say. the main reason this cannot be legendary is the fact that they're using someone elses material, i.e Batman.

So it just cant be classed as original as say Finla Fantasy or Tekken or Metal Gear.

Its made by the same people that made tomb raider. I'm not getting my hopes to high. As for inFamous having competition I don't think it will.

Hope they do a better job with the ad campaign than Killzone 2 got!

I dunno, I need to choose between this and the Wolverine game. Both look really good, but I am still leaning towards Wolverine.

I've actually seen gameplay footage on ign from the developement team. This game is gonna be a definite buy. You really have to see all that Batman can do. It's like a stealth/action game. It's gonna be tough b/c I was gonna get Infamous and Prototype..But now I gotta pick two out of the 3.

Gonna have to pass from the outset, but I hope it's good anyway. Batman fans deserve a decent game. I wonder why superhero games tend to be so blah?

No thanks Eidos! I'm not down with hollow promises. Just like they said TR:Underworld would rejuvenate the series. TR:Underworld was one of the sorriest pieces of crap I've played to date. Bring back Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series then I might have to buy one of your games. As far as InFamous goes, that's a definite purchase.

Super Hero video games always suck cause you cant fully be them in general. I see this game like all Super Hero games very GTA based driven, linear, Highly objective to do list etc… This is gonna be like boring Metal Gear, stealthy gameplay. The only way I would by this if I could have a bat cave. Have all of the Bat gizmo's etc… Vehicles. Why not give me the oldschool bat man with the voice acting by Adam West, now that would be badass!

I sort of agree with the statement and wish the best for this game. I mean judging by that preview of gameplay shown 2 or some amount of weeks ago…it looks pretty nice. Graphics aren't bad for something like a Batman game…the gameplay looks very interactive, sound I can't tell yet…cinematography and environment – one level was just shown so I can't really have an opinion on that…and voice acting – we only heard some of the enemies speak and so we can't really get a whole outlook on that. Wish the best though.

BTW: the game is nice. the battle combat is tight and i love how on some moves in zooms in on the hits.

This is because most developers just want to make some quick cash with the games. Ever since the Batman movie became a big hit, they can't make the dead clown look bad.

I hope that this game is good…empty promises give me gas and Eidos has given me a lot of gas over the years. I will rent this however, the main pull for me is the fact that they got Mark Hamill for the Joker and Kevin Conroy for Bats. If it's any good then I'll get it when the price comes down.

This is the first superhero game I'm actually interested in. Most of them just aren't too good. Like that one superman game….

Oh wait, all superman games suck. In case you haven't noticed, superman games always fail. Always. Hopefully batman will fare better.

I'm hoping this one will live up to its potential. Haven't played a batman game since the genesis so that will go nicely with the nostalgia I've been getting recently with sonic unleashed.
Too bad it seems like the summer is overflowing with competition, like the #1 title on my list Ghostbusters (hopefully that lives up too), infamous, and overlord II cuz if arkham sells real well maybe it would help fund the next legacy of kain. They must be getting it through their heads at some point, it's a franchise everybody whose heard of it wants brought back, unlike tomb raider.
