As Videogamer.com reports, Bioware has officially announced the long-anticipated RPG sequel, Mass Effect 2 …but PlayStation 3 owners will be disappointed to learn that their console of choice wasn't mentioned.

Most people simply assumed that in this new generation that has seen the demise of multiple third-party exclusives, Mass Effect 2 would be on all three major platforms. It was also important to note that with EA holding the publishing reigns, it seemed even more likely to find this sequel on the PS3. But either the game will be another timed exclusive, or it simply won't come to Sony's machine at all. Dr. Ray Muzyka, general manager and CEO of Bioware:

"We're going to surpass the extraordinary gaming experience we brought our fans in Mass Effect by delivering intensified combat and expanded weapon options as well as increased depth of planet exploration, all while delivering a powerful, emotionally engaging story. Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to be an unforgettable RPG-shooter experience, taking players on a non-stop roller-coaster ride filled with stunning plot twists and no-holds-barred action."

The title is slated to arrive in early 2010 and is confirmed for the Xbox 360 and PC. But that's where it ends and it's disappointing for PS3 fans, many of whom had been counting on this sequel to go fully multiplatform. Again, though, this may be a timed exclusive; Microsoft may have paid to keep it on their console for a certain period of time. We'll let you know if either Bioware or EA issues a PS3-related update some time in the future.

Oh well, doesn't really hurt my feelings any. The AI on the first one was retarded! Kept getting stuck on stuff so I'd have to back track to find him!

Plenty of other games coming to the PS3 that are NEW and look good!

Microsoft wastes yet more of their profits. What's the point of continuing to do this when by the time Mass Effect 2 arrives, people probably can buy the Arcade 360 for $149 or lower? I guess that's the point. Still, after dealing with Fallout 3's bugs and glitches perhaps it's time to bid the Western RPG genre adieu.

Not only them but the devs destroy their allure of the "Fresh Game" and cant compete with the newer titles later. I bet thats why BioShock wasn't a huge sell on the PS3.

Doesn't really hurt my feelings when I can play stellar titles like Uncharted 2 and God of War III.

Timed exclusives are becoming quite annoying if that is what this is. The only people affected by this practice is the consumer. No one is going to by your console because it has the game first. I hope MS keeps paying to punish gamers for not owning their console.

So true…
Just look at Bioshock as an example! If they would have released at the same time, then I'm sure they would have got more sales. But when it's a year away, bigger and better things come along, and you forget about it.

I, for one, never even looked at Bioshock when it came out for PS3. I played it on PC…but didn't impress me even then, so…

MS doing this just pisses people off, and adds fuel to fanboy talk.

I was expecting a PS3 release for this but that press release is pretty unambiguous. I guess it's a timed exclusive then, but that would put a PS3 version at the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011 at the earliest, and I can't see PS3 owners being that interested in a year-old sequel to a 360 game released in 2007.

It might also be that the first game is on a timed exclusivity which hasn't expired yet, so EA/Bioware might eventually be looking to release a bumper version that includes both games, just as soon they're able. Blu-Ray could certainly fit them both on the one disc.

They do stuff like that to fuel the flames now the 360 fanboys can talk about another game the PS3 dont have or dont have now and try to twist it to look like the PS3 is inferior to the 360, by saying how it takes longer to come to the PS3 cause the system cant handle the game. They beleive that stuff I already hear that all games on the 360 are 1080p while the same game on the PS3 is only 720p all garbage.

Deadman, they don't have Killzone 2, and that is good enough for me! The more I play KZ2, the better it becomes… like a fine wine!

I feel for the guys who wanted to play it. I'll more than likely end up getting it anyway. I got the 1st one and I am enjoying playing it.

But still plenty to keep me going on the PS3 as well, plus I do think the PS3 has more and better games coming anyway.

Played the demo of that Xblades tonight on the 360 and I wasn't impressed with it, so that's another one I'll be giving a miss.

I couldn't put up with either the elevators or the glitches on the 360 version and found the PC version incomparably better and if the PS3 version was gonna be a port woud it even be playable?
Great game, mind, and if they iron out the clitches I may get the follow up but I was never sure that it going to PS3(esp with that engine again)would be wise.
Nothing to cry about if you don't have a 360 as I would put my house on the PC version being the best one again-even cconsidering that you can use your saved character from ME in ME2 on 360.

@mastiffchild I completely agree. I have ME on the PC and even if it released on the PS3 it wouldn't make much sense not to add it to my PC collection with the original.

Jlee is right. No question mark is needed. It's not coming to PS3. That doesn't mean that BioWare might not have something cooked up for the PS3. They are working with PS3 dev kits so perhaps something exclusive to the PS3 is on the way someday.

I don't know about that. If it is 360 exclusive I think the user base would rather have a game with first person shooting, sex, and tits rather than an actual RPG.

Fatcat3788

What Coverton said. It might work against Microsoft as well… I mean… userbase-wise I see more Xbox owners going for an American action RPG rather than a JRPG. Hopefully SE gets the picture after this one…

Whether it is coming or not I am getting it on the 360.

Woah! Easy now! Let me explain first. It's just that I cannot pass up the ability to bring over my Mass Effect data to Mass Effect 2.

This is actually the reason I never really saw how they would bring parts 2 and 3 over to the PS3 in the first place anyway.

But look at it this way by the time part 3 is out you will be able to get Wal-Mart to pay you to take an Arcade off their hands.

All this talk about Microsoft paying off developers is disheartening. If it is true that is pretty freaking sad. I see it as a smart move by Microsoft though considering what the Playstation is bringing out this year and next alone, but really? Paying for a timed exclusive that is being made by a third party developer who, from every sense should have been making it multiplat… (this is EA we are talking about) It just seems backwards is all… I mean IF this is the case, Microsoft should grow some balls and actually use that money so developers can try making new IP's not to hold onto a game for a set amount of time.

Anyway back on topic. I am rather disheartened by this news. I really enjoyed the first and I really wanted this to come to the PS3. EA and (I believe) Bioware have lately been praising the PS3 so what the hell? Anyway… I am just sad to see another solid RPG pass the PS3 by.

It's a "disheartening" kind of day I guess.

They did it with L4D why not this its not like the 360 has anyother games this year just that ninja bade and another halo spin off thay need this let em have it when we're playing Uncharted 2 or God of War III well be like Mass Effwhat 2 huh?

LegendaryWolfeh
LegendaryWolfeh

um, i can be pretty sure MS didn't buy L4D, mostly because valve openly hates the ps3, and since they developed it, they had no intentin to make it for ps3, and ea nvr in-house developed like they said they would

Deadman
Deadman

The orange Box came to the PS3 if Valve hates it so much then why? Portal rocked the rest meh but I got my 6 hrs out the game. M$ probably bought them out to, or they are another that cries the PS3 is "TOO HARD TO DEVELOPE FOR BOO HOO, THE 360 IS EASIER" But if ME2 is a timed exclusive it will be treated as others rent only games only take a week to beat anymore anyway

Geobaldi
Geobaldi

I doubt Microsoft bought them out since they were founded by people who worked for them to begin with. EA was responsible for bringing The Orange Box to the PS3 not Valve. And Valve has since said that if any more of their games come to the PS3, then they would be the ones to do it and not outsource to somebody else.

CH1N00K
CH1N00K

meh….

Didn't play the first one, unless they bring it over to the PS3, I don't foresee me playing it either. But remember that this exclusive stuff works both ways…FFXIII were PS3 exclusives at one point to.. Maybe if enough hype gets drummed up over Mass Effect 2, then the developers will bring it over..

The question is do we want it? We already know the history of games made for the xbox and ported over to the PS3…they're crap. Why would we want more of that when we've got some great exclusives of our own that are made to be played on the PS3 first….

Let MS have it. I didn't lose any sleep over not playing the first one…I'm not going to lose any sleep over the 2nd. If you're the type of person that is going to lose sleep over it, then you probably already own a Xbox 360 anyways, and you still get to play it…so what's the problem?

Hope Dead Rising 2 doesn't go this way.

Orvisman
Orvisman

Dead Rising 2 has already been confirmed for the PS3. It's Lost Planet 2 we need to worry about.

Also, I posted this in Ben's article that DR2 and LP2 won't make it out until 2010; but it is the last post and the thread seems to have died.

According to Kotaku, the original quote that indicated these games wouldn't make it until next year was referring to Capcom's next fiscal year, Fiscal 2010, which runs from April 2009-March 2010. So, there is still hope that we might see one, or both, of these games in 2009.

Look, will Capcom only release Dark Void this fall? I mean, really, after dropping SFIV and RE5 in the first three months of 2009, does the rest of Capcom's 2009 lineup consist of only Dark Void?

I, however, will readily admit to looking forward to Dark Void.
