Sony could've done a better job with the advertising and promotion, but in many ways, the latter took care of itself thanks to the Internet. Now, Killzone 2 has surpassed its first sales milestone.

Although we don't have the official numbers from the NPD just yet, VGChartz is reporting that KZ2 has already hit 1 million sold worldwide. It has only been available for about two weeks and in the first weekend alone, it managed to sell over 700,000 copies in North America and Europe; less than two weeks later, the excellent FPS has hit the 1 million mark. Now, Sony mentioned in the past they expect KZ2 to sell as many or more copies than last year's gem, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , and it may be possible. At last check, MGS4 had sold 4.5 million units over the span of about 6 months, so to pass it, Killzone 2 is going to have to sell more than 3.5 million copies in the next five and a half months…if Sony steps up the marketing a bit and more and more people start purchasing PS3s, that might just happen. Either way, the game is certainly one of the best we've ever seen and if you haven't yet had the pleasure, it's time to do your part and up that sales number.

The immediate competition is Resident Evil 5 , but as far as we're concerned , there's really no comparison. RE5 is fun if you were a fan of RE4 and aren't expecting anything too new, but KZ2 is gonna rock no matter who you are.

Nah….MGS4 had a great story but KZ2 has the "fun factor" and the cool Helghast baddies.

Traded in MGS4 after 2 play-throughs but I plan on keeping KZ2. On my third play-through now and been going into the stellar online quite a bit also.

Heck, I still have KZ1 and Liberation still in my collection.

MGS4 is better obviously, but KZ2 will sell much more. One reason that Xbox games sell so much better than PS3 is because they are FPS with multiplayer. If one kid buys the game, their friends will buy it to shoot each other online. MGS4 is a single player experience, after you play through it, you lend to your friend to play.

@godsman… I'm sorry but i think you are a little narrow minded with that statement… I dont have a good reaosn for it but here is my opinion:
I think it's because MG has a deep storyline which needs to be followed. KZ2 is from what I think is more gameplay intensive and not as much emphasis on story so i easier to pick up and play

well many of us expected kz2 to be great and sell well and that did happen so thats awesome like the article mentioned sony needs to step it up a bit with the advertisment…..n there is no way that any1 would be able to compare kz2 to re5 at least thats wat i think they are totally different games ill just have to get re5 to see if its just as good as kz2

I'll admit that i was impressed with Killzone's graphics and physics. I'm also glad that it sold well since it's a PS3 exclusive.

KZ2 is much more accessible to the average gamer than MGS4.

I love KZ2 though. It reminds me of Read Faction A ALOT. Which is great because Red Faction is one damn fine game. The more i play KZ2 the more i notice just how much detail they put into the little things. Im about halfway through on Elite and loving every ball-blisteringly hard section of it.

and see, to me, KZ2 is what i've been waiting for while MGS4 was like wtf? i'm sure i'm in the minority here, but i just don't get the MGS thing. its not for me. that said, i am glad its a huge hit as a ps3 exclusive. we need all the love we can get. and i hope KZ2 gets its due

I'm confused. The big story a few weeks ago was that there were over 1 million pre-orders in Europe alone.
Wouldn't those count as first weekend sales?

Surely that many of them didn't cancel their pre-orders because of the supposed "controller issue."

really?

because down under, its sales were VERY lackluster.
ive even had a few customers ring me up and say "am i able to bring back halo wars? i played it, and thought its nothing like the others, its pretty crap actually"

it may have sold well in US because most US gamers are fanboys without a conscious.

LoL, you wouldn't know MGS4 sold that much around here. Still plenty of Limited Editions sitting on local shelves. Heck, last week they dropped the LE price to $45.

Not sure why Sony would think KZ2 would outsell MGS4. The Metal Gear series is one of legend. A new game in the series will sell like crazy. KZ2 unfortunately is not based on successful legendary games. Why would you expect it to do better? Based on what? It may as well have been a new IP. KZ2 is good enough to stand on it's own… but don't compare it to MGS.

BTNwarrior

because there are alot of FPS nuts out there who wanted a reason to use their PS3, and KZ2 gave them that reason.

plus KZ2 was just an epic masterpiece in the FPS genre.

Untill they step up their marketing I don't see KZ2 surpassing MGS, I like KZ as much as the next person its the best FPS I've ever played but Sony isn't making a big deal out of it, their advertising suck and thats the bottom line hopefully one day Sony will prove me wrong

Have you been eating bad lettuce? Killzone has a solid back story.

The Killzone 1 game was my second favorite shooter on PS2 (The first one was Black) and Killzone Liberation continued where the first game left off and KZ2 continues where Liberation left off.

***spoiler***

Where do you think Raedec got the Nuke from and why he needed the codes?

****End spoiler ****

Goto wikipedia and look up Killzone for more backstory or visit the Killzone website it has oodles of info and fun interactive timeline.

Yeah, MGS4 definitely sold itself better than KZ2 does, but MGS4 also had more commercials for sure. I remember a kind of crappy one, might have even been a gamestop commercial, and it was also part of those cool PS3 commercials with the LBP and R2 and MGS4 and Motorstorm holograms on the buildings and stuff.
But at the same time, it's a little harsh to say there's no way it could sell as good or better since a looooot of people are more partial to FPS than TPS. There is no arguing that.

It's KZ2, I'm not surprised at all by these figures. The market is saturated with 1st person shooters. KZ2 has pretty graphics and a weak storyline, clearly not a good combination. Rental at best IMO.

CH1N00K
CH1N00K

Going to disagree with you there. Yeah if you're new to the series the Story line is a little weak. And I can understand why you would say that because a lot of people are new to the storyline, especially since Killzone 1 didn't get the best of ratings when it released and Liberation is only on PSP.

But the gameplay? Come on, are you going to tell me you've played a first person shooter that was harder? (Although I know you're a Prophet for the PC so maybe you have, I don't know all the PC shooters)

Now granted if you're only buying the game to play the storyline, then yeah…it's a rental. But if you like FPS's, the target isn't to play the story line anymore. Story lines are kind of an afterthought now. Look at FPS's that have come out recently, they all have the same formula. Decent story, decent to great gaming…Kick-a** Online community..

And that's the way they're going. I mean besides level of difficulty, what has really changed in the FPS genre in the last few years? Aside from online, not much.

I remember when everyone was all excited about master chief having Dual wielding guns in Halo 2…but that hype died off quick. I remember when the shotgun used to be the weapon to have with you at all times.(heh, boomstick.) Now it's scoped assault rifles. But in general the formula is the same.

If Killzone 2 hadn't of had online, I would have traded it in already, but with online…the game case will sit on my shelf for a long time. (until K3 and R3 are launched…lol)

If it's not you're type of game, then that's your call, but I think you've judged to early and are missing out on a great gaming experience because of it.

I used to hate online (mainly because bots are easy to kill, real people shooting at me would frag the crap out of me) now it's one of the key things I look for when buying a game. It adds more value for your dollar, and can be the deciding factor between renting or buying.

I'll admit KZ2 has the best FPS gameplay on any console IMO. That being said I'm completely biased towards that genre on consoles thus it has kept me from fully enjoying the game. Evidently there are other PS3 users out there in the same boat as me. Not everyone enjoys a FPS on a console regardless of how great it is, I'm sure quite a few people bought PS3s for adventure games and RPGs.

CH1N00K
CH1N00K

On a side note, (and I know I'm going to catch flack for this) I never got into the MGS series. Never played the originals that much, So when I tried MGS4…kind of found it slow and didn't really enjoy it. All the characters in the storyline were old characters so I didn't really get into it as much as others might have. There was a lot of the backstory that I didn't know.

It's too bad because I feel like I've missed out on a great game, but unless I got back through and play the others, I won't enjoy MGS4 and will never finish it because I can't get sucked into it.

With KZ2 where the storyline is a little less complex (yeah, I never played the first one either) I enjoyed the game a lot more because I understood more of what was going on without knowing the back story or key characters.

Killzone 2 is FREAKIN AWESOME. If you own a PS3 and are not playing this game yet, You are missing out!

SP and MP are great and they even have an offline mode with bots (on the multiplayer maps) for you shy people.

The link between the game and the PC (Killzone.com) is amazing. I can show my friends my on-line and off-line stats anywhere there is a internet connection.

Burnout Paradise is the only other game I know that does this.
