This is what happens when an unconfirmed release date begins to circulate, and despite all evidence to the contrary, everyone starts to hope its accurate.
UK site Play.com recently listed God of War III with a September 25, 2009 release date. Now, as most of you know, this is well before the expected launch of March 2010 (the date still sitting in GameStop's database). This caused a bit of an uproar, as PlayStation 3 owners the world over began to drip fresh buckets of salivation in anticipation of a 2009 GoWIII release. But an SCEE representative has responded to SPOnG today, and not surprisingly, that date isn't real. While they admit to preparing a massive marketing campaign towards the end of the year, which will include Kratos' third and final adventure, they don't expect the game to release in the fourth quarter this year. Said the SCEE spokesperson: "We haven't confirmed a release date for GOW3 yet, we should have more details on this at E3. We're asking Play to remove that now as well." Yeah, we hate to burst your big ol' bubble of hope, but as far as we're concerned, there's little to no chance that this game will drop in 2009. It's not a disaster; we can wait until March, especially with the likes of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves scheduled for this year. That will make up for not having GoWIII.
So if you saw that Play date and enthusiastically added GoWIII to your holiday wish list, please do remove it. Let's not jump the gun, here.
