Killzone 2 releases next week, and we know all of you are excited. However, perhaps the lone primary drawback is the fact that it doesn't offer co-op gameplay.
There have been plenty of rumors floating across the Internet recently, and some are claiming that such a mode is in the works. Guerilla hasn't officially confirmed anything but thanks to a recent interview with European site Next Gamer, the possibility of co-op isn't out of the question. Said Senior Producer Angie Smets:
"We're investigating [co-op] now for downloadable content. We're looking at what would be the nicest possible things for downloadable content. We've already started on maps… we're not allowed to talk about anything else unfortunately!"
Well Angie, don't look now, but I think you just did talk about it. We can wait on the details, but the mere fact that a Guerilla representative mentioned that they're "looking into" co-op in the near future is enough. We don't always need every last multiplayer option available for every major release, but when it comes to FPSs, the more multiplayer modes available, the better. Let's hope co-op DLC is coming soon!

Adding Co-op after the initial release of a game… sounds like a glitch fest.
Doesn't really matter to me though, I've never been a big co-op fan. I've always enjoyed going through singleplayer at my own speed rather than changing my pace to match someone else. Then again, sometimes you just click together and beast through any enemy.
My absurdly long term affairs with Modern 3d MMOs have lent me the impression that objectivity is essential in game development. Bending to the will of the loud and voracious will lead only to a disconnect to the gen pop, and in the end will taint the original Vision of the game.
Balance is the key issue for me. Adding a second human controlled ally to the game can only make it easier, and thus, less rewarding. If the game is retuned for Co-Op mode to pick up this slack, then a seasoned player will be heavily punished for playing with someone new to the game, and visa versa.
The variables involved with determining the final Difficulty of any game, or specific encounters, are often too complex for simple slide rule adjustment, as well as AI priorities have to be Drastically reworked to compensate for the second human influence.
This is a lot of time and effort that will be siphoned off the dev teams resources, that could have been put to use for more advanced, or timely releases of add on content. If KZ2 is to live up to the hype, it will need to carry its standards through the product cycle. Post production Co-Op play addition will harm the depth and quality of the DLC they wish to release.
you don't even know what they might mean by co op yet
for all you know they might just do something like waw and add HELLGAS ZOMBIES 😀
or something
True, but don't forget that Sony's studios' advantage of knowedge/tech sharing, which could forseeably cut down time and resources spent with these retuning and production cycle issues.
@Jofamang
Why do you think co-op will be easier? If you would have seen Resistance 2 co-op the number of enemies on screen rose exponentially actually making it harder to get through an area.

That is exactly my point.
Games developed with Co-Op from the start have a foundation designed for that game option.
After-The-Fact implementation of any game mechanic requires far more resources and development, with higher risk of fault. I'm not claiming its doomed, but without a doubt there will be an inordinate amount of effort required to accomplish it properly. These are resources that would have otherwise been applied to progression on the original vision of the game.
For me, it boils down to developers giving in to demands that may damage their integrity amongst gamers that appreciate a Roarkian approach to final product presentation. Perhaps those of us that feel this way are too much of a minority, or at least to quiet about our appreciation of that philosophy.
Co-op campains are fun if you go through it the first time but if you have already beat the game it is kind of lame to go through the whole thing with a friend who hasnt
I like split screen online much better than co-op campain
Very true. Online Multiplayer Split Screen co-op is better than campaign Split Screen Co-Op.
Online Campaign Co-Op will be so awesome.
I agree with you 100%, online split screen like R2.

Great to hear, hopefully it comes soon after since i know a couple of people who were a little disappointed with the lack of co-op
i hope they do. i like my singleplayer, but i need more options for playing with my friends too. its definitely not a make or break the deal thing with this game though
This would be an amazing addition.
Hell yes amazing news.
co-op is nice, but…
it'll take SPLITSCREEN co-op to get me excited. I'm too much of a loner to play online co-op with a complete stranger.

same!
We're not complete strangers on PSX, lightshow and ^^^. I would play co-op with another PSX member any day. Killzone 2 would seem like the perfect venue.

Well thats because we relatively know each other Timster, to a certain extent. LightShow is talking about a random person who joins the matchmaking room. I also prefer to play with a friend right beside me, and if that isn't possible, then friends I know in real life who have there own system, then PSX members.
i wouldn't mind playing with a PSXE member, provided they don't stink up the joint ^_^
and there'll always be a special experience playing with someone right next to you. It's a social experience. I know my little brother doesn't play video games unless he can play with me, just because they bore him unless there's a social aspect to it.
Awesome
Yes, it is awesome.
But that is not why I'm posting.
Love your avatar!
Now that's good business that's what I'm talking bout.
you mean II'm them boys gonna think your from LA
[email protected] YEA GURRILLA!!!!
Bring it on!
Rsistance 2's offline co-op was so FUN and so sweet.
Please allow for offline co-op :*( (in story mode).
Cool.
I hope they add it.
=D
It would sure give haterz a lot less to complain about… 😀
YES!!!
That be nice, but what I am really hoping they bring to kz2 is mp vehicle support. Anyway guerrilla you should start on your next game while you you polish kz2.
Does this mean the sites that pooped on KZ2 for lacking this will have to re-review?
I like the new pic. You're not robbing anybody, are you?

lol, thanks, nope just some wacky tactics at a theme park, its minnesota so my bud keeps a ski mask in his trunk (which is also where the booze was at the time)
HMMMMMMMM,YESSSSSSSS,SSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool, the is a 99% that this wil become a reality. u guys know that we r going to wait a while 4 de coop dlc.
Making that Feb.27th release date even hotter!!!
I can't wait!!!
I think co-op (online and offline) should have been a higher priority than online deathmatch gameplay.
I think it will make the sales of K2 go even higher than what has been anticipated… Personally it doesn't bother me as I don't really mind if they have it or not. But it would be a great addition to the game. Make those fanboy/haters even greener with envy….
Yes, good news. I'm also hoping for offline multiplayer in the form of split-screen and LAN. They've already got the bots, so shouldn't be too difficult.
Hell yeah man, not to mention even the first killzone had offline splitscreen with bots included!
Im not a big fan of single player campaign co-op.
No! More DLC!? can they just release it via a patch? =(

meh dont really care about the co op i didnt like r2 co op at all
I think offline, split-screen co-op would be very nice. I love it whenever a game releases with a co-op option. If the game is good, like KZ2 will most certainly be, it gives more incentive to play it again. Besides, I'm from the old-school era where playing split-screen co-op with my brother, or another buddy, is complete gaming nirvana.
I agree with you rogue_ninja and although I'm 15 making me not old-school, I LOVE Co-op.
When you have two younger brothers who share the same passion in gaming as you, what's there not to like about Co-op, whether it's good or bad?
I think that easiest way for them to implement Co-Op is for Online (PSN) Campaign Co-Op. It would just take to synchronize the two players movements during someone's campaign. This would eliminate any type of graphic or framerate degridation of the game since it would only render the screen ONCE with small updates from the other Player.
You would need to have a system so that you would load at the beginning of a level ONLY. Which is fine. That would work.
Killzone Liberation had co-op so Please bring it to K2 Guerilla.
I'm half way through Liberation again in SP. I'm gettting that itch to Kill in some Zones on my PS3.
