You have to understand the question: I don't mean we won't have any interest in the next PlayStation; I'm simply wondering why anyone should even mention the PS4 at this point in the current generation's lifespan.

First of all, Sony has never wavered in their 10-year-span stance for the PS3. Now, the 10 years could include the inclusion of a new PlayStation console along with the continuance of the PS3, as they point towards the PS2's long-running lifespan (currently 2000 – 2009). This means we could feasibly see the PS4 in 2012 or something (6 years after the PS3's launch). However, while I certainly understand that the industry is constantly in "forward-thinking" mode, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I really can't see any PS4-related articles gaining a lot of interest. The gaming media is awfully good at jumping the gun, but we've already seen rumored spec pieces regarding the next PlayStation, and we have to admit…that's pushing it. First of all, there are plenty of gamers out there who haven't made the leap to the PS3 yet, and secondly, every sign points towards a long run for the PS3 with no evidence of a PS4 coming "sooner than expected."

The economy sucks right now, Sony wants to continue to establish the PS3, and the defining software has only just recently begun to arrive. One could argue that it began with MGS4 in June of last year, and we'll take more steps with the likes of Killzone 2 , God of War III , Gran Turismo 5 , Heavy Rain , etc. The PS3 has a loooong ways to go, and if you step back and examine the situation from afar, you'll see the system sitting – perhaps not in its infancy stage – but certainly in its youthful, burgeoning stage. The PSN is rising, Home is here and I think we all agree that is in the infancy stages, and we're still awaiting the price drop that puts the machine at the "sweet spot" (so said one analyst). The PS3 remains one of the most talked-about systems in history so maybe it's inevitable that the PS4 will garner plenty of early attention, but let's not get that far ahead of ourselves.

It's a dangerously slippery slope. Before long, we'll start writing news articles about what might happen in 2058, all the while ignoring the press releases sitting in our inboxes. Let's just take it easy, people.

This begs the question: If you don't see PS4-related articles generating interest… why did you write this article?

Agree fully.

Honestly, I am not that focusing on a new machine at this moment or at any moment. To me, it is always the software (the games) I care. At this very moment, the developers should focus on how to make a smooth transition from the PS2 developing frame to the PS3 developing frame and produce quality games to match up the PS3 power.

The PS3 is just about to truly flourish and Sony had a big loss by making the PS3 machine in order to move onto this generation. The PS3 market is just getting warmed up, if we or sony is thinking again to create a new machine, then on the software side, developers will never be able to catch up. Conversely, focusing on upgrading and perfecting the software and games are the top priority for ps3 or for any generation of consoles.

On the other hand, when the PS3 technology is again matured and out-dated, then moving onto the next generation i.e. PS4 is reasonable and necessary, but certainly not now.

no, not at all. I'm perfectly content with my PS3. Sony should just focus on the now. They haven't even got home to where they want it and there are too many gaps between their exclusives both on a time table and quality.

The '3' is a blossoming bud getting ready to blow your mind! Really, it's just getting started on it's potential! This console is redefining the way we think about games! All the "PS4" really is right now is some fanboys wet dream!

Too be honest I'd be kinda upset if a ps4 came out. Spending all the time (only…since Dec 07) on my ps3 and then boom a new system? WAY TOO EARLY. Tons of people would be po'd about the lack of stuff for the ps3 that they JUST bought at that time

Althoguh im obviously interested in PS4, i think sony shouldnt start making it cuz

1. economy
2. wat microsoft said about the economy (lol) and that this gen would last longer than others (this is MS's 2nd generation but I do agree with them)

Therefore, I think sony should listen to them, although they are competitors.

And I just got my PS3 oct. 08 so If i wanted a PS4 i would want it in 2014-2015 (i kno im selfish but thats how i feel) cuz i want to spend my PS3 days as long as my PS2 days (6 years). and im 15, so i got a long life ahead of me…=)

Also, on a sidenote, I realized that every time the games industry hypes up a new system, and it comes out horrible, or has a horrible start, the industry just goes along with it!

if it started out bad unintentionally, they start thrashing it (PS3) or if its good, they side with it and they say "oh i knew all along, ive been rooting for this day to come!", but they used to thrash it before (wii, and its non-HD capable graphics, not to mention, at that time, its weird motion controls)

Any talk about a PS4 right now would be pure speculation. Specs change a dozen times before the actual release of a new system.

The PS3 has a long life yet…"Live in the Now!"

Exactly. And technology is always advancing. In 5 years time there could be a brand new processing unit that hasn't even been thought of yet. So to give the next gen of consoles its spec now is just rediculous.

My PS3 is one month old 😀 so I dont even want to hear about any new PS4. Among all consoles PS3 is the one best suited to last more, and amazing games are barely showing up, so there is no hurry for a new one.

dont think Killzone will push any hardwares this year, not like MGS4 bundle did, because that bundle included backward compatibility. The Killzone bundle does not have as much appeal as the MGS4.

I disagree. I say Killzone 2 sells more copies than MGS4 and I know consoles will be bought. Are the KZ2 bundles even available in the US?

I dont see the lack of BC being an issue, especially now that some great games are coming out. I still dont see how not having BC is an issue, I didnt buy my PS3 to play PS2 games. And if it were an issue then xbox wouldn't have sold as many consoles as they have.

He's talking about the original 80gb model that came with MGS4. It has the emulator although it doesn't have full b/c it can still play most PS2 games (unlike the current 80gb. model which doesn't)

The cell CPU will have a 10 year lifespan, but Sony might want to put the PS4 out to compete with the Nextbox and Nextendo. The media will keep talking trash if Sony doesn't put something out.

man I think the real flop is S-E not this gen jejejeje. SONY is doing real good overall, PS3 is an amazing system and awesome software (games, applications, BDs) is already arriving. PS3 will be around a looong time. Unless a real big leap occurs in cpu and graphic tech making the PS3 looks outdated, the PS4 will be here around 2014 as shak said. PS3 has a lot of power untapped, CELL arch is a very tricky one.

Oh, I hope not, cause I'm still focused towards getting a PS3.

Besides, we're nowhere near even seeing all of it's raw power & full capabilities fufilled yet, hell I'll bet a lot more of what can be done still hasn't been realized yet either.

But when Sony does bring out the PS4, they had better heed the majority of it's gaming consumers, in our continuing loud united chant of…..
"BACKWARD CAPABILITY", "BACKWARD CAPABILITY"
(and for ALL of them too, the PS1, PS2, & the PS3)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say that the next ps will come around 2012 – 2013 simply because it has been about 6 years for each platform till the next one arrives. Keep in mind that just because the next system may come out at around that time, it wont be as if the PS3 will die then and there. If it does come out then… thats how its always been so dont get too upset

Bandit King
Bandit King

I could not agree more, I think the PS4 coming out any time soon would be a true death blow to Sony as most of the PS2 user base still has not decided on where to migrate to next, and not many PS3 owners would be so inclined to plunk down the change for another new system. I have spent roughly 2800 on just the system, cables, accessories and of course my TV. So I am not in any hurry to spend another 4 to 6 hundred on a game console. I think essentially it's all these chicken little claims from the media and rival companies that is leading to PS4 talk. The 360 is getting on in age and I think it's starting to show some signs of that, and the Wii? Pfft, that thing was dead on arrival. So with the other two either being a bit older or down right technologically backwards it's causing people to wonder when their replacements will arrive, thus people wondering about PS4.

Who cares about the PS4. I've owned the thing for quite some time now and I'm still not content with all the experiences. I've had MANY great moments on it but I can only imagine how many more are coming our way.

I don't believe Insomniac when they say they have tapped all of the PS3's power with Uncharted 2.

Is it too soon to discuss PS4? Maybe. Is it too soon for Sony to begin R&D on PS4? Absolutely not. Although, utilizing existing PS3 architecture helps lower R&D costs and maximize profits for the inevitable PS4. It seems very ideal for PS4 to use existing tech and dev-kits that programmers had to learn for PS3 to make it more appealing to the developers.

In conclusion, I would have to agree with Ben's article that it is too soon to discuss PS4. Stories about the PS4 only further hurt PS3 sales, similar to those about price cuts. That only keeps those sitting on the fence up there that much longer.

That doesn't mean I don't want to be the first to hear about the specs of the new console.

well, i think it would be quite the kanny arivement… it would also be widely accepted i think! the cpu will last 10 years, BUT the chances are that the next xbox and nintendo will come out before then, the next generation will be in less than 10 years, so sony will have to release a new console when it arrives. if they dont, they will most probebley be challenged/doubted or whatever you want to call it from the media and people!

Alienange

I think the PS3 will be out much longer than 10 years. What's a new system going to do that a PS3 won't? We're going to have 2180p graphics? Not everyone is running out buying the latest flat screens to even handle the current resolutions. Come out with a PS4 are you kidding?

Also as mentioned by Ben, the economy sucks. That alone will add two or three years to the 10 year plan. I for one believe that many more people want the PS3 but are holding back either because of the price and/or the hard times we're in right now. On top of that? As someone already mentioned, where's the games? We're only going to get ONE FF and ONE GoW? Yeah sure. Production cost are higher for this gen, cycles are longer for this gen, you can't compare it to the previous two.

This gen will last much longer. When the PS3 is fully saturated with amazing content, then, and only then, will we see a PS4. Talking about it now is a waste of good gaming time.

microsoft consoles have much smaller life span (this is why it has cheaper build quality, every product has a designed life span) I think we will see a new xbox in the next couple of years with Ps3 improving (when devs really start fine tuning the hardware and disk space etc). Wont be enougth to take on a new microsoft console (bigger ram, newer graphs chip etc). ..I then think Ps4 wil then be out about 3 years after "720". this way sony wont be in direct competition again and also give the ps3 time to last a decent life cycle and gain sony profit. They will also be able to see exactly what level of improvement they need to achieve as the 720 will have already been out for a while. This will bring another leap in graphics etc. Both companys will benefit (good for us, nightmare for devs, lol)……I recon any ps4 talk(even within sony) will be nothing other than basic concepts that will likely completely change as the market / tech evolves and changes over the next 5 years. man I really need some sleep, hope i stuck to the point lol.

I say dont worry about the PS4 or even the next console from microsoft. Technology evolves on a yearly bases. It's hard to say what will be in the next set of consoles in the coming years.

I say enjoy the consoles(if it's running) that you got now. You and all of us just might die tomorrow. So enjoy them if you got'em. You never know what you got till it's gone.

For me I fully utilize every aspect of my PS3. Games/movies/music/pictures/web surfing/PC with yellow dog OS. In 2015 I'll show more interest in the PS4's tech. The Cell is still years ahead of current chip design and will be for sometime.

yeah like everyone here has been saying, who cares?

I had my PS3 for about a year and a half now and there is no way I want to exchange it for a new one.. even if it is 100 times better!

And hopefully the PS4 will be much like the PS3, a powerful gaming machine that can practically replace a PC, as well as having a nice/decent price tag. We want everyone to enjoy what Sony can produce without all of this fanboy nonsense, which undoubtedly caused this mess this gen (at least I think).

To be honest guys, reading the comments… I understand how you all feel… but those who have seen me here for a good two years and more know how I feel about the current system.

Don't get me wrong dudes, I have great affinity for the PS3; but I have always felt that Sony had to (and did in the end) cut corners. My gripe has been MEMORY predominantly… I think the Cell BD and RSX combination was (and still is for the most part) a powerful combination… and we all agree that we are only now beginning to see what the hardware can really do… but I will be honest here, I want more power… more memory and more power…

If Sony were to release a PS3 Advance – basically a compatible machine that simple doubles up on all this power… with more memory; I would gladly buy it… no question… If the PS4 came out next year I would buy it too…

Let's look at what we can all assume will be the likelyhood;

1] We know developers have taken a "hit" trying to develop for the PS3 *cough* Valve *cough*… we also know Sony (looking at the 10+ year plan) wants to make sure that any future generation of PS hardware is based on PPC tech; again to facilitate development and make it easier to essentially run games on both a standard PS3 and possible a PS3 (or PS4) advance model… it only makes sense…

2] On from point 1. I feel very strongly about this; and think I will be proven right; that any PS3 Advance system (or PS4 system) will likely stick to a next generation Cell… with more cores… a doubling of power to some degree…

3] I expect a new generation of RSX; however it is rumoured that Sony may go for an INTEL based GFX solution… I think Intel are moving into that space due to the fact the GPU's today are also being used for general purpose computations, not just GFX computations… super computers will be based on GPU tech in the future… I expect the GFX bandwidth and processing power on any updated PS3 or PS4 to permit 1080p output as stabdard without too much of an issue. No cutting corners because code is not highly optimised… like it is in Killzone 2… and still it is not running in HD!

4] Memory / Memory /Memory… the problem here is the limitations of memory and the slow speed at which the CPU and GPU have access to data stored in memory… I would be very surprised if the next PS is released with less than 1GB as standard… WHY, to permit real HD texturing and not the sudo smudgy (sometime non-crisp) texturing we see today… just walk up to some texture in COD and see what I mean… have to say Killzone 2 seems to do a better job at it… but still look blurry sometimes…

5] An upgraded BD drive… faster and with the capabilities playing different BD formats… I think new Panasonic format of 400GB is covered as far as I can tell and what I have read… but we have to have confirmation of this…

Basically that is it.. Memory being the most important upgrade followed by pure CPU and GPU grant…

I WISH Sony would release a PS3 Advanced… with double the power and double the memory… I would buy it tomorrow… and so would many people…

Q!

"i aM HoMe"

An advanced version does have merit and i wouldnt believe it to be out of the question since they have the hardware expertise to do it (does anyone remember the Japanese only PSX?)

Ken Kuturagi always said he was basing the PS3 on updated SKUs but was always mum on the word if it meant updated hardware. If this was kept in mind in the design phase an upgrade could exist on paper somewhere. Also it should be of relative ease to retain full compatibility with current ps3 games if its on the same architecture.

Secondly they wouldnt be going back on their word of a 10 year life cycle and it would combat M$ should they try and sneak a revised 360 out of the gate as well (which god knows they will have to if popular opinion about it already maxing out is to be believed). If they did run with an advanced version the marketing would be a sinch as well.

EDIT: Going back to Ken, i just remembered him saying this console generation would be more like the PC and its upgradibility. If revised hardware editions are on the cards, perhaps this whole console generation approach to the console market may infact end. Food for thought huh.

It's Pioneer with the 400GB Blu-ray. Also, Intel's first real attempt at graphics is coming around the end of '09. It will be a processor with two 32nm processor cores and one 45nm graphics core.
