Once again, we're a little surprised at the results of our weekly poll, but in retrospect, it may not be such a shock. After all, the most recent installment in any series – particularly if it's appropriately awesome – is foremost in our memories.

But whatever the reason(s), you have chosen your favorite Metal Gear Solid entry: and it's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots by a landslide. Initially, we figured it would come down to MGS4 and the original MGS, but Kojima's latest effort easily captured your hearts…as if that's any shock. It arguably features the best storyline in video game history, the characters are extremely well drawn, and of course, that fluid, more action-oriented gameplay worked beautifully. Many of the purists love to make a strong case for the original or either MGS2 or MGS3 but there are very few fans who will say MGS4 isn't deserving of all the praise it has received. The next poll is up, and we're continuing the trend: perhaps the next obvious step is to ask which Final Fantasy installment is your favorite. No, we're not including every last title in history that has Final Fantasy in the title, but all the significant installments are on the list. We figure this should be a relatively close battle, but we get the distinct feeling that FFVII will grab the win…

So cast your vote now and see which FF is the PSXE's reader's favorite. Afterwards, we'll think about doing polls on the best storylines, best graphics, best characters, etc, etc, etc. There are more than enough subjects to keep our polls going, and stay tuned for the return of the Best of the Best Polls, too.

as far as FF goes…

FFVII was a good game, but I think it has achieved "legend" status, i.e. whenever you ask the average gamer which FF was the best, his answer will be FFVII, especially if he never played it.

Point: the odds are a bit stacked. I think the poll would yield more interesting results if FFVII was omitted from the list, if only to remove the obvious winner…

EDIT: Ace beat me! dangit…

FFVII's overrated

For me it's tied between FFX and FFXII. Voted for XII since it doesn't get the love it deserves!

I voted for MGS4 mostly for the reasons mentioned in this blog. Awesome story, awesome characters and refined, intuitive gameplay. As for FF I chose FFX simply because it was the first FF I ever played and it was awesome. I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 era but I never played FF until FFX. I hear allot of people rave about FFVII and if SE ever makes a remake I'll buy it to see what the hoopla is about. If I were to play the original PS version of FFVII with its antiquated graphics and gameplay I don't think it would have the same charm for me as it did for people who played it when it came out.

FFVIII for the best start (albeit not so great ending. time warp nonsense.. it just popped outta nowhere)
FFX for a nice mix of everything
FFX2 for some nice views haha (but seriously weird wardrobe change for yuna)

I gotta say nothing so far has beaten the Materia system in my mind, easy and versatile. The draw system forced you to draw magic so often that I got sick of it, the License system had promise but many weapons were just too weak compared to a basic sword or axe and Quickenings were just frustrating.

I consider myself a Top Tier FF fanboy:
My first Final Fantasy was FF1 on the NES. It was only my second RPG experience, after Dragon Warrior, also on the NES. Completed FF1 at lvl 31 on my 8th birthday. Oh Snapple Oldschool pwnt~
I have played all the numbered console FFs to completion.
I have played all the portable FFs to completion as well(Back in the day I played the FF games on my GB, have revisited the ones I missed through emulators on my PC)
I have owned each of the FF series on release here in Canada since FF7, not counting the Cellphone games. I refuse to own a Cellphone, otherwise I would probably have those notched down as well.

I voted FFXII as my favourite. I was a long term Everquest player (about 8 years from Beta) and I really connected with the MMO style of FFXII, not to mention the stunning presentation and depth of play. My order:
FFXII
FFVIII
FFX
FFIX
FFVII

Hey Jofa I'm right there with ya, started on FF1 when I was 9 and never looked back. That's why even though I've got beef with SE I'd never boycott my favorite series.

I even played that horror show Dirge of Cerberus, lol.

I'm still confused as to why you had portable-ops+ on the list. + was just a stand alone expansion to the original and it had no storyline or anything just a few new people you could snag for online play

I liked mgs4 and all, but mgs3 is by far my favorite. The score was awesome and the story was even more tragic than mgs4. I got chills as soon as Eva started talking and "debriefing" kicked in. Sadly I didn't feel the same way about mgs4. I'm aware of the copyright issue and all but mgs4 needed some variation of the original theme.

I was pleasantly surprised when I hit R1 and could look down Eva's shirt. Or was it L1, I don't remember.

The first MGS game I ever played was Snake Eater. I played through MGS1 right before 4 came out. Maybe if I had played each of the games in the order they were released I would have different feelings, but I have to say MGS4 was my favorite. I havent played much of MGS2, but I did enjoy Portible Ops. (NOT Portable Ops+, there is a difference)

As far as the Final Fantasies are concerned, FF7 all the way. It is the only reason I've played any of the FF games. I played the demo for FF7 on the disc that came with my PS1, and I fell in love with it. FFVII FTW!!!

I picked up portable ops to add it to my collection last year as it's becoming kind of rare but I hate the camera/control scheme! The restrictions due to the lack of a second analog stick are really annoying. Which is a shame cause I really gave it a shot but I just hated the controls!

mgs4 is amazing. bought it when first came out, completed it and the lent it to a mate. recently got it back, but it was stuck on the shelf since. then "jackAss360" started talking about it when he was bangin on about renting a ps3 to make some sort of point (lol, wierd kid). but i thought id give it another play through. But this time Ilooked up the unlockables on the internet and came accross the "40 emblems" tasks. Ive since played through it another 3 times, i cant believe how much replay value the game has (for the single player part at least) if you go for the emblems. not to mention all the other little things I found out on the way. oh and Jed, theres a simlar thing on MGS4 where you press L1 when snake drops his cig in front of niomi, and he looks up her skirt. The game is just filled with humor at times. BTW, thinking of looking up MGS2 unlocks also, as I have that sat there on the shelf (and probably missed a looad of content with that to, any hinters let me know) Also never played MGS3, which i need to sort out soon.

Also did a similar thing with res4. My mate was that wound up that id never played the game, he bought it for me (was like I was getting told off at the time, lol). Think it was only 10 quid off amazon or somthing. He walked us through a few levels, explaining how it was "ment to be played" and left me to it. left it for a few months, then started properly on it just after christmas, man that game is good. Again, must have played through it about 3 times in a row….I think its those crazy japanese developers, they just seem to be able inject unbelievable amounts of depth and attention to detail in to their games. Im not sure I will look at games like COD in the samre light from now on (they have there own pedistal, but as far as depth goes, just not not the same).
I havent played any FF games, but I have a suspision I might have a similar shock. ..Which one do I start with guys;-)

People should stop bashing FFVII just because it's been milked, "overused", "cliché", and "overrated". FFVII is a game like no other, which is why all these things happpened in the first place; back then it wasn't this overrated. All you bums are trying to do is be underground and seek life from an underrated thing so you can keep in your back pocket and be proud of.

But don't get me wrong, many other FF's are games like no other, too.

I had to vote for FFVII. I've played through most of the other ones, and not many of them ever had the same feeling and depth as VII. Although IX is a close second for me.

Now, this is what the PSXE community is all about! You guys makes me feel like I'm in middle school again, when my buds and I used to argue over the smallest details, the minutia, of all the games we loved or hated. And that, my friends, was a helluva long time ago. Sniff… sniff… damn!

Oh yeah, FFIX FTW!

I voted for FFVII because it is the best game EVER!! I loved part X but VII was the first on i had ever played! and You get to do more stuff! you ride wherever you want! and not ask a person where to go. Get a gold chocobo. Knights of the Round was the best summon of all time! cloud and sephiroth! are awesome!!

with out them FF wouldn't be what it is today!

and proof is that FFVII is the best because its in the top 20 of all time sales and they make complications of the game! and a movie! They know FFVII is a gold mine

just because XIII is on the 360 doesnt mean Everybody will get it for that pathetic system. Everybody likes the Controls on the PS3 so they will get it on the PS3! but anyways we still getting FF Versus XIII and Nomura is developing it! He's a better Developer than the developer for XIII

it was a hard choice to choose between MGS3 & 4 but i picked MGS4 because of all the memories that came back to me when snake revisted a certain location, also the game was just f**king AWESOME.
One more thing, the line 'Snake had a hard life'nearly had me in tears, like when master yoda dies in ROTJ.
I'm not a RPG guy so i don't have an opinion on any FF games.

Off topic i got a brand new 60gig refurb for ZERO bucks,it was nearly 1 year out of warranty but i blagged my way through it,HUUURAY!!! i can play disc based games again.

MGS3 was my favorite. MGS4 had too much cutscenes, it was more about actin, not sneaking:) Wish I had backwards compatibility in my ps3 to play MGS3 on it. Although MGS4 was very good also. Hope there will be MGS5:))))

Meh i think MGS1 deserved it for its story or MGS2 for its addictive gameplay.

Well FF7 is goign to win this poll, ovbiously, still i voted for FF8

My preefered order stands as:

1. FFVIII
2. FFVII
3. FFIX
4. FFX
5. FFVI
6. FFIV

Then the titles i dont care about(at least im honest)

FFT – Most unplayable.

FFXII – Most Disapointing.

FFX-2 – Most irritating.

I would not say it is impossible. Impossible for one DVD obviously hell impossible for 5 DVDs most likely but never underestimate the power of limitless American spending to strengthen market dominance. I hold out hope though that Kojima is not the type that would sell his soul for quick collateral.

Everyone knows FFVII is the best final fantasy. Two years ago I paid $85 for it, it was worth every penny. It's my favorite final fantasy and my favorite video game of all time (Yes even ahead of Halo 3). Final Fantasy is without a doubt my favorite video game series of all time.

honestly, other than the fact that FFVII is the first 3D epic scale RPG and it lead the revolution of the RPG world, I do not think FFVII is that fun or graphically beautiful. FFVIII,IX and X are better in that sense.

If we say FF7 is the greatest FF, it is because it is the first 3D RPG and it sets the trend and direction of all 3D RPGs and it introduced a new looking of RPG gaming. Other than that, I dont find FF7 is that intriging. Chrono Trigger is way better in story and pure RPG elements — nothing is more "RPG" than Chrono Trigger in my opinion.
