Konami’s Profits Rise $2.56 Billion, MGS4 Sells 4.5 Million

When you have a game like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , your financial results are bound to look good, despite a lagging economy.

According to GameSpot, Konami has reported their financials for the April-December period, and total revenues rose 5.1% to 234 billion yen ($2.56 billion), and net income grew 17.3% to 17.8 billion yen ($195 million). MGS4 was one of the driving forces behind these numbers, as it continues to be a top performer for the publisher. The best game of the generation so far (yeah, we said it) sold 4.5 million copies worldwide in 2008, and in the first nine months of its fiscal year (April 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009), Konami has sold 22.35 million software units so far. MGS4 was big, of course, but it can't hold a candle to the likes of the latest Pro Evolution Soccer title, which has sold 7.41 million copies in that nine-month period. So in general, Konami is rolling along nicely…we won't mention the next Metal Gear just because we know you're expecting us to. Well, we're not. Oh, wait…

Despite the rosy numbers, though, Konami did warn investors that the global recession will hurt the overall numbers for the full year. Due to "slower consumer spending and a strengthening of the yen," Konami has been forced to lower their full-year expectations. They're now predicting a rise of 3.2% to about 307 billion yen ($3.36 billion) in revenue, but only a small 0.3% increase in overall profit to 18.5 billion yen ($203 million). Oh well…a gain is a gain, right?

I still would have expected MGS4 to sell more.
Its almost criminal if you own a ps3 and not MGS4 in my opinion.

Back from New Zealand, back on-line 🙂 dudes!

I would have expected MGS4 to have sold 4 to 5 million copies. What a shame for such an incredible franchise.

Yip, "Im The Man" you are right about that. got confused with Resistance 2 figures… my bad… Nevertheless… maybe more sales were expected from MGS4; I myself haven't got the game yet… waiting for the price to go down a little 🙂

Hey blitz30952; yhea, love the place! Looking immigrating there in about 3-4 years… nice goal to look forward to. I am back and forth fairly often. I have an apartment there which is rented out and recently business there with a new customer…

So all in all plenty of excuses to go down there about twice a year. I will be back in Christchurch around May/June time… that is what I am planning anyway… go on the Edoras tour (LoR); and also probably Queenstown 🙂

Yea but you know when they relaese MGS4: Existance, which will be a re-release most likely (Which will included revamped games of MGS 1-3 **My Dream Game**} they will have another surge of sales.

What does the word existance mean? I've heard of existEnce but not existAnce…

Edit: Oh that must just be a typo on your part. The actual game has an "e" as I expected.

you know why the will never make directors like cut of MGS4? DLC, it officially spells the end for that type of stuff with this series

I was just about to make a comment like this in regards to SE. MGS4 proves that you can still make allot of money making games exclusive for the PS3. I know FFXIII would've made SE a ton of money even if it stayed PS3 exclusive.

And I am proud to have bought the game on the midnight launch of it where I got to meet Hideo Kojima and get the autographed game and all 😛

Ok enough bragging, seriously MGS4 is the best MGS to date!

That alone makes it one of the best games ever made and rightly so!

Can't wait to see where the franchise goes next.

Hope Sunny grows up and takes charge!

MGS4 was the best game of 2008 in my opinion. And selling 4,5 Mil units is very impressive, and it will keep growing in time. the ones who haven't bought it yet will eventually. And also all the new PS3 owners that gets one for KZ2 will eventually have to play MGS4 otherwise they are just being stupid. I rate MGS4 can easily reach the 7 Mil mark by the end of 2009…

4.5 million, not bad for a game with zero marketing!!!

MGS4 rules!! i hope that the next metal gear game will be exclusive to the ps3.. Metal gear doesn't deserve to be played with other consoles besides the ps3..

There's probably plenty of sales left for MGS4? And kojima says he needs to rebuild his company to match other big sellers in the West.

Since were bragging a bit… I believe I played MGS4 before everyone here…

Unless one of you guys was there at E For All.

The setup Konami had was sick! The bunker where we got instructed on how to play was surrounded by a barb-wired fence. I was so nervous to finally get my hands on it that I sucked big time, and did horribly once I got a chance to play.

Yeah the game is still priced pretty high I believe that it can sell about 6 mil once it reaches a 30 or 20 dollar price point.
