Okay, so as you all know by now, you won't be able to move and shoot at the same time in Resident Evil 5 . You couldn't do it in RE4, either, but many had assumed that Capcom would institute the more action-oriented and dynamic control scheme into this next-gen sequel. Well, it isn't there, and the reaction around the 'Net is one of general annoyance.

We have the game to review – no, we won't be issuing any analysis until the embargo is up; we follow the rules – and I sat down with the demo last night. When Arnold told me the "tank" controls remained and there was no option for running 'n gunning, I initially took the news in stride. See, I really loved RE4 (as most everyone else did), and I didn't mind the control limitations and restrictions in the least. Of course, this was probably due to the fact that RE4 was for more action-oriented and fluid than any other RE installment to that point. Furthermore, when I started playing RE5, I noticed Capcom had increased the speed of the zombie attackers. At first, they tend to shuffle about like always, but when they spot you, they will often rush you, and there are many of them. It didn't take me long to realize: if they were going to do this, they should not have kept the same control scheme. We really do need to move and shoot. If you want our aim to be compromised, fine, but standing stationary is rarely a good idea in that game.

On the flip side, I suppose it encourages the player to be more patient and more strategic. You really do need to keep your distance, and even if you are in close, your character's new melee capabilities really are quite effective. The knife appears to be just as cumbersome as ever (it's like a franchise patent), but stomping and punching enemies works quite well. Your partner, Sheva, is no slouch, either, and I love the auto-trading between the two inventories (if she has an excess of ammo and you're low, she'll toss some bullets over immediately). Besides, when standing still, you can target parts of an enemy's body more accurately; hell, you can even shoot the weapon they're carrying. And of course, there are the survival/horror purists that don't want their games to play like every other third-person action title out there, and they do have a point. I can certainly understand that viewpoint, especially because the genre lines are becoming crossed and blurred at a very rapid rate these days.

So I'm not saying I won't play RE5 and I'm not saying it won't be great. What I am saying is that what could've potentially been a 9.5-scoring, 5 million seller may have just dropped to a 8.5 – 9.0-scoring, 2-3 million seller. These controls just don't seem to suit the new environment, and it does feel restricting.

As far as I know, they have been infected with a mutated strand of the ebola virus. No doubt in my mind that TriCell is behind it, and no doubt in my mind that Wesker has something to do with TriCell. He either founded it or is trying to steal their work and shut them down. Anyway, the enemies in current RE games have become faster and stronger.

as far as i can tell, the enemies are the product of a super-soldier experiment gone awry. Exposed subjects get a lot of physical abilities, at the cost of their head; they cant think worth shit, much less follow orders, so Umbrella 'officially' disbanded the project but kept it going, with different strains being released into the public as experiments to see how close they were getting to something usable.

I haven't played all of them, though. there might be something in there that I missed.

Anyone else find it strange that the Ebola virus can make you faster and stronger. When the primary effects of the Ebola virus is to turn your insides to mush. And kill you within weeks, You think they would have found a different name or made up something else.

The controls are the same as always so I absolulely loved the demo. In my opinion the controls will only hurt sales to those who have never played the franchise before. The new coop elements add enough for me to be happy without adding the ability to run and gun. I mean, if the world was invaded by zombies and you were running scared for your lives, how many headshots do you think you could get while running??? ūüôā

while the controls worked for the awesome RE4 this is a game which clearly yells 'shooter'. and dead space really did ruin it lol cos ppl are used to that kind of survival style now. if they dont put an option in, or patch it with an option i wont be getting it. its just so clunky to try and shoot on the spot its crazy.

You know, I could handle the 'ify' controls if I could just move while aiming. Even if it was at a unheard of ridiculously slow pace. Getting locked in place when firing isn't that bad, but when it pertains to doing ANYTHING. Yes. It blows.

**Note: Will I still get the game? Probably. Will I finish it? Probably not.

i agree i played the demo and loved it sept the fact the controls are very difficult to use especially when being swarmed by zombies, and the big boss'. it gets quite hectic and to have to use L3+X to try and run away can be discouraging while using L1+R1 to shoot while enemies circle you is crazy ur player cant move any faster than a slug in this position, if i remember right you are able to move while aiming just ridiculously slow, i also thought somewhere that was mentioned that u can move while aiming in RE5 and thats the dif. in it against RE4 idk? the controls are why i didnt like the old ones, and to be honest the knife is almost useless except to break open crates to find ammo or herbs the fact your stuck in a position with your knife weilded yells come get me… although the zombies do seem lenient for the controls i noticed some will charge at u then completely stop in front of you pretty much saying shoot me now! all im saying is i liked the demo alot but to fight off zombies i think run and gun is the way to go atleast let me fire from the hip if needed and let me move with my knife in hand or while aiming. the co-op is a seller for me though lol after all the complaining i think the co-op is great!

Well, I've been a fan of the Resident Evil series ever since the first one. (how can you not love Wesker's lame-yet-hilarious dialogue?)

I downloaded the RE5 demo the other night, and played some. I'm not feeling the game in general. It's not just the controls, I'm afraid.
While the graphics are amazing, the rest of it doesn't quite meet my expectations.
Maybe I'm being nitpicky, but…

–> camera just too close? I get dizzy after playing the demo for 10mins.
–> aiming is too slow for the speed of the zombies. They should maybe slow the zombies a bit, so it's not so annoying.
–> running is weird, in that, you can't look around while you are running.
–> (major pet-peeve) there seems to be a lot of "invisible walls" here. It's hard to hug the side of a wall without some invisible wall stopping you 3 feet from the actual wall. grrr

(I don't really mind not being able to move and shoot, cuz I've been there since the beginning of the series, so I'm used to it.)

online co-op, great, splitscreen co-op..not so great…too hard to see everything..anywayz, i really only like the co-op, yelling and laughing witha afriend while getting surrounded by zombies is a lot of fun. and seriously not trying to irritate anyone or be racist, but anyone notice that there are less 'african' zombies then other colors?

laxpro2001

I'm pretty sure that has something to do with the fact that Capcom got a bunch of complaints about racism because all the villagers were black… seeing how it was in Africa I can see how that would make sense, but nevertheless… people got overly sensative and complained.

So Capcom tried to even things out and according to your comment (haven't seen it myself yet) went overboard to not deal with the negative publicity.

Atleast it was complained about early and we didn't get another LBP which was the most BS in gaming I've ever experienced.

Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games. I shrugged off the controls because of the intensity that came with it, not to mention, the over-the-shoulder cam worked well.

With that said, RE5 is looking to be one of my least favorite of the series. The controls leave the game unbalanced, and the player at an extreme disadvantage. To add insult to injury, so far as I have played, the game isn't scary, and lacks the intense atmosphere of 4. I actually laughed more than I did jump due to the politically correct random white guys and asian guys following the rest of the zombie crowd… Oh capcom…

Man i've played this since becoming the master of unlocking and i gotta say not being able to run and gun bites! (no pun intended) Im sad to say i wont be picking this up, it seriously detracts from what would be a totally kick a$$ game.

Yes im used to it but i expect certain advancements in a series especially something as basic as control scheme.

It doesn't innovate
levels are small
exploding red barrels
tank controls
uninteresting, generic main character
aiming is awful due to laser on gun
it gives me motion sickness

Another former exclusive gone to microsoft that fails.

RE5 joins dmc4, gta4, tekken 6. Well done capcom and microsoft *claps hand*

NiteKrawler

Wow…I'm surprised so many people are so upset about this. I'm definitely getting the game. I really don't think being able to move while aiming would give too much of an advantage. I just run away, turn to shoot, then run away again. Not hard. Even if I did hate the controls, the coop is enough of an "advancement" to the series to sell it for me. Do I think it should at least be an option? Yes. Would I have used it? Yes. But come on, it's not something that should make people not want the game. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

P.S. @bigrailer19: The knife is definitely not useless. You obviously just don't know how to use it. Try shooting the legs to make them fall, then slash them while they are on the ground. Saving ammo is the name of the game here. Also, stand at a window and slash them when they try to come through…they'll never make it. Plus it's just plain useful to get them to fall back so you can get a melee hit in.

Arvis

Actually, you can just stomp on them now. The knife really isn't as important, it seems…

ok b4 everyone starts dissing controls and choppy gameplay remeber this.at the tile it says that this is a demo this is not finished product.and so far everyone in here is acting like they played the whole game.this demo is just giving everyone a taste of things to come and to get comfortable with the controls.this isnt call of duty nor is it gears the res games never nor will they need the option to run an shoot.having this control scheme would make this game easy peasy in my opinion.i had my perfect round last night and i cant wait for this great game to come out.so please dont hate appreciate.peace to everyone in psxextreme

Moving around? I didn't have to do too much of that in Deadspace, but I didn't feel like I was treading in molasses, either.

Highbird
Highbird

Not being able to run and gun seems to be one of the few 'tense' or 'scary' moments you can have in RE. RE4 wouldn't have been as great if you could just run around in a circle blowing the 'zombies' away. It would be just a mindless shoot-em-up.

Not being able to move does add strategy. Leaves the game unbalanced???? Leaves the player at a disadvantage???? What? How easy do you want the game to be? I'm 100% for the not being able to move and shoot concept. It ADDS to do the game, takes absolutely nothing away.

Adds strategy? Ive always prefer developers to achieve this with clever design choices, not poor handicapped ones.

Highbird

So all the passed RE games were handicapped? And that wasn't a clever design choice? To me it was an excellent idea. It can get frustrating and it can be hard. But that's the point isn't it? Master the controls, become elite!! lol

Aftab

Thank you. I couldn't have said it better, myself. "Tank" is exactly what it felt like when I was aiming, or trying to make turns while running. And because of a lack of an effective strafe maneuver, moving around reduced to trotting, or turning around, then trotting. And the game doesn't feel nearly as scary as Deadspace. It just made me feel claustrophobic.

NiteKrawler
NiteKrawler

So being able to move while shooting, which would make the game easier, would make this game more scary than if it was claustrophobic?

Highbird

Three seperate concerns. Cumbersome movement, lack of mobile shooting, and aside from that was my criticism of the lack of fear-factor, granted, which was only based on two levels.

Highbird
Highbird

Why does it have to flow? Whats wrong with the frantic, claustrophobic, omg-theres-zombies-swarming-me feel?

Not everything has to be this or that. RE has been successful as hell with that same type of control scheme through all the games. It adds a challenge, yes it adds a handicap to those who play FPS all the time and don't know any better…but it has worked!

Aftab
Aftab

Also, I'm sorry. "Claustrophobic" was a poorly-chosen word. You know that feeling you get when your room is really messy and can't get around without tripping? That's it. It just doesn't raise my heart-rate as Deadspace would do even in the first couple of levels of both.

Highbird
Highbird

That was a fine word! lol…Dead Space is an entirely different atmosphere from RE5. The more RE becomes an action/shooter, the harder its gonna be to scare you or even make you jump. But again, thats what it sounds like everything needs to become to be good…Motorstorm-Action/Shooter, Heavenly Sword-Action/Shooter, Ratchet and Clank-Action/Shooter, Eye of Judgement-Action/Shooter, Buzz! Quiz TV-Action/Shooter, Singstar-Action/Shooter and of course Skate 2-Action/Shooter…now we see where Sony has gone wrong!! I could fix everything!

Aftab
Aftab

I hate to sound like a broken record, but was Deadspace just an "Action/Shooter"? And yes, it was a totally different atmosphere: it actually was scary, "lol".

Highbird
Highbird

I wouldn't call it an action shooter…You can't just blaze your way through the game. You gotta pace yourself, conserve your ammo, etc etc…Its definitely more along the lines of Survival Horror than RE4 was or what RE5 appears to be.

Aftab
Aftab

Thank God! That is exactly what my point is. A game like Deadspace successfully implements "survival horror" without excessively restricting movement. I was actually looking foward to RE5, since I like a lot of Capcom games eventhough I didn't play RE4, and I wasn't looking foward to Deadspace because I didn't care much for EA. But after playing through Deadspace, and granted, only playing a demo of RE5, the tables turned for me.
