I'll make this abundantly clear off the bat: despite some of the more significant technical glitches in Gears of War 2 , it was easily one of the best games of 2008 and certainly one of the best of the generation. However, I found Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to be a cleaner, and ultimately more entertaining, production. Yes, I'm talking about the first Uncharted and the most recent Gears . Considering that it's silly to compare either Resistance 2 or Killzone 2 to Gears , the closest PlayStation 3-exclusive competitor is Naughty Dog's new series. …and in all honesty, I see Uncharted eventually surpassing Epic's series in terms of overall quality and fun factor (yes, I'm aware the latter is subjective).

Even though there was plenty of critical acclaim and the game sold very well, I still think Drake's Fortune is one of the most overlooked titles of the generation. This is due to a number of factors: first, the PS3 had been out for only a year – and a rough year at that – when the game launched, and it simply didn't reach a very large audience. Second, it wasn't an established franchise and typically, IPs don't fare as well as hotly anticipated sequels. Third, Sony's bad marketing and promotion left Uncharted out in the cold, but we're starting to see a reversal in that lagging advertising, as Killzone 2 is gonna be seen everywhere. Taking all this into account, I see Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as being one of the biggest PS3 releases thus far, and it should cement the 2009 holiday season. As for the impending Gears of War 3 , I'm sure it'll be awesome, but…

Look, I'm just breaking this down in my head. Visually speaking, Uncharted 2 is gonna be amaaaaazing. In a recent interview I did with David Jaffe, he said he's seen some of what Naughty Dog is doing with this sequel, and his praise was high. He even said he'd love to work on a massive project like that in the future! And we've all seen the teaser debut trailers, right?  Drool much?  So I'm telling you right now: unless there's a significant graphical leap in Gears of War 3 , Uncharted 2 will look just as good, if not better. In terms of sound, I enjoyed the soundtrack more in Uncharted , and I'll say the voice acting and effects are pretty similar in terms of excellent quality. Gameplay is tough; both are so fluid and so incredible in what they offer the player. But there really wasn't much of a difference in Gears 2 in comparison to the original, and I've heard about several important enhancements to the Uncharted 2 gameplay foundation. This is just speculation, but I'm trying to base it on hard evidence.

I've no doubt that I'll play both Gears of War 3 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , but I'm predicting that the latter will set the bar for third-person action/adventure titles this generation. …and I'm not willing to bet the farm that the third Gears can leap over that bar. That's all I'm saying.

Wow I never once thought about comparing the other game when I played both of these. But yeah gears 2 was a great game and uncharted was too. They are both beautiful games.(edge probably to uncharted because it isnt as gritty as the gears games) Haven't seen much of uncharted 2 although I have that gameinformer mag and have'nt seen anything of Gears 3. They're both great games and I cant wait to pick up both of the new ones!

Dude, you havn't played it yet. Not to mention, with working at a game store, the amount of gears of war fans compared to uncharted fans (which has been like…. one?) is significant. Yeah, it's newer, but it won't kill off gears.

Probably because R2 is a more arcade-style shooter like Halo, and Killzone 2 is more of a realistic shooter like CoD4. Although they're all shooters, they are each distinct in the field.

gears and uncharted are third person shooters/action adventure that use very much the same cover system originally seen in killswitch.

comparing thirt person games to first person games just dont add up because they are totally different beasts so comparing uncharted to gears makes waaay more sense.

I honestly didn't like Gears 2 as much as i did Gears 1. The online was horrible for the first month(my friends tell me its better now), and the boss battles were really boring…

I mean a chainsaw fight O_o are you kidding me, RAAM was wayyyyyy better he put up a great fight(damn near impossible to kill)good times with RAAM. But Uncharted is a great game but when it comes to these two games it gonna be preference.

I 'm with you on the Gears1 over Gears2. Reaver rides? Really? Thats not exactly how i roll, or fly for that matter. Uncharted on the other hand was my favorite. Definitely a matter of preference though.

Uncharted is still my favorite game of this generation. I think there might be "better" games, but there was a feel to Uncharted that I don't think any other game has. Needless to say, I have very high hopes for the sequel.

When Uncharted first came out…it was seriously gorgeous. Naughty Dog never fails in animation. It made beautiful environments in Jak 1,2 & 3 for the PS2 and made a flamboyant environment in Uncharted. It has a nice cover system, uses the sixaxis good enough, and as for graphics in general – the one thing that stuck out for me in the most was the after effect of going in the water. You'd see Drake's clothes…wet and completely drenched. Then you see the drying effects…and it just looked so…..WELL FUCKING DONE. Gears of War looks also really nice. Not beautiful (considering it's a war-torn battlefield with nothing but gallons of blood being splashed on the 1080p screen) but yes realistically gritty. But I've noticed pixels in faces of the models sort of mushing in and just not make a clear face where as Uncharted you could see Drake's reaction during battle sequences and stuff.

Uncharted 2 to look as good as Gears 3…I agree. Why??? There was no improvement between Gears 1 to 2 graphical wise IMO. Maybe some environments had a better…..ummm…shine?? To it?? But other than that…graphics wise yea.

have you played both games ffrulez? they are really similar, there wasn't enough puzzles in the first game to really call it puzzle action adventure. Can you name one puzzle that was hard?

shooting is an addition? guess you haven't played uncharted then, there is way more gunplay than anything else on that game. If you are trying to compare it to a puzzle action game like tomb raider, you are dead wrong

Aftab

I didn't like the demo much. The controls sucked. Without any dodge, I found myself trotting passed boss's to avoid their attacks, and that felt irritatingly weak and tedious. I'm probably gonna pass it, and I'm glad I passed RE4. Deadspace showed the player doesn't need to have his hands (and feet) tied to generate fear.

cegmp

I agree with Aftab. The demo wasn't bad, per se. But it wasn't exceptional either.

Daedusian

Once you get used to the controls the game is so much fun, but I can see it getting boring and repetitive at some point because of it's slow moments.

Type D was my fav setup as the analog stick only moves in the direction you face rather than your body moving all at once and together.

And I finally beat that damn chainsaw boss because the freaking girl kept screwing it up for me. She always 'accidentally' shot the barrels before Mr. Chainsaw man was there, leaving me no choice to shoot, which then made it too slow and boring because I had to pistol whip his ass the entire time lol.

Definitely buying it though, but for the 360 since that's what my friends only have =.(

well, it does actually. Cause gears started really big. Even though uncharted will be an amazing game. it won't stop people from playing gears. Even if it gets bigger than gears. maybe by that time though, the GeoW series might have ended already.

It seems the only significant criteria of a game's excellence is sales numbers. That "bigness" you are observing of Gears is only related to marketing hype dollar.

Aftab
Aftab

Edit: Sorry, I meant, "the only significant criteria FOR SOME PEOPLE".

ec0li

@Aftab

There is just so much "marketing hype dollar" can do for a game. When a game continues to be played and bought by millions of people, the game must have done something right. To give you an example, Too Human and Haze because of initial hype sold relatively well for the openning week. After that week, the bottom just fell out and they both died a quick death. To say that Gears's "bigness" is just due to "marketing hype dollar" is undeniably false. The game can't please everyone but for every person it does not please, there's thousands that happen to enjoy it. You gotta give credit where credit is due.

No more killing plz, well I've gotten excited about u2 it just looks awsome and unlike geow2, they are going to put more emphasis on character development and story telling, as for graphics, isn't u2 suppose to be better looking than kz2, if that is the case than no 360 game will stand a chance( graphically ). Always wanted to say this "360 has no games"

Apples/Oranges. I think I know why one would stop attempting to compare R2 to GoW2, but that, imho, was a much more apt comparison because they were at least both shooters.

That's kind of an unfair competition. Yes, Sony uses BRD so it can hold a much larger set of textures and objects. Yes because of BRD it can support 7.1 channel audio at a much higher quality than xbox's.

However, while those are important to a game, Audio and Visual are not the most important factors. Pacing, Control, and Immersion are much higher factors that the previous mentioned assist in, but are not necessary for. I myself get just as into a game of Wolfenstein PC (insert any old game title here) as I do WaW.

Games with technical excellence will belong to the PS3, unless Microsoft figures out a way to catch up quickly. However, when it comes to exclusives that are gripping and enjoyable to play, Sony is still playing catchup.
