With Killzone 2 mania in full swing, it becomes a distinct possibility that Guerilla's stellar FPS will cause a spike in PlayStation 3 hardware sales, much like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots did in the middle of 2008. But these days, given the fantastic diversity of the next-gen consoles, there are plenty of factors to consider when purchasing a new system. Therefore, does this put added strain on the software?

In other words, does a game have to be one of the best titles ever made in order to coerce a consumer to buy a new system? Obviously, there are a few requirements: the game can't be played on a machine they already own, for instance, and that one title has to play a major role in the decision. This has always been the case in the past. PS2 sales really didn't take off until Gran Turismo 3 launched in 2001; many came right out and said they were waiting for the game to release before springing for Sony's new system. Others said they were waiting for MGS2 or FFX, which came out later that same year. In this current generation, though, people seem to be especially careful about making an especially expensive purchase. Therefore, perhaps we need something like Killzone 2 in order to push consoles; so far, the only other game capable of having a significant impact on PS3 sales has been MGS4. …and yeah, we're all well aware of that particular title's quality.

But apparently, this is what it might take to become a legitimate "system seller." It can't just be exclusive; it has to be absolutely amazing . It has to be a landmark production. Perhaps it's these we have to look for in the future when trying to predict hardware sales: what are the upcoming titles that will push hardware sales for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo?

I'm still waiting for Fatal Frame Wii to come out before I get one of those. Does that make it a system seller?

🙁

This is one of those games that should be on the PS3 because all three previous games were on the PS2.

The same thing with Monster Hunter 3 tri.

This is one of those things this gen… Sony isn't getting every game on its system.

It was Microsofts media blitz coupled with the fact the 360 was the first next-gen system that made Halo 3 a system seller.

So it may be that a potential Halo-killer will do the same for the PS3, but can Sony pull off a successful media blitz? It is going to hinge on whether or not this game captures the attention it deserves, and so far it is doing well but I still see a huge media bias against Sony's monster and the key will be overcoming this obstacle. Can they do it? is the real question.

The real question: is Killzone 2 really a Halo-killer? The gameplay of both games are distinctly different. Halo focuses on the beat down and vehicular combat, but Killzone 2 is rooted firmly in CoD4-style gunslinging. You also die with fewer bullets in Killzone 2 than in Halo, so it's much more tactical.

I personally don't think that it's a Halo-killer just because KZ focuses more on realistic warfare and Halo is much more heavily arcade style.

But if you want to base that title on its sales and popularity, then you have an entirely different animal.

You make an excellent point, they are quite different it seems. I guess I just got used to that term because everyone was looking for and FPS that could put it to shame ya know?

Yeah.

I would like to see my friends drooling over it.

Sadly, they'll just make fun of it since it doesn't have any local multiplayer (right?). That's the one flaw this game and Resistance 2 both have, in my opinion.

I think there is more than one way to be a Halo killer. You could be trying to beat it at its own style of gameplay, but I think the fact that KZ2 will be the best FPS so far will technically constitute it as a Halo killer (keep in mind that many people believe Halo is the best FPS ever).

I think KZ2 will have split-screen competitive multiplayer, but it's definitely not getting split-screen co-op.

The only reason we sit down in front of an XBOX and not a PS3 on our monthly gaming night is because HALO2 has offline split screen competitive multiplayer – a feature I thought was sadly lacking in R2.

If KZ2 has this most excellent feature I will finally be able to drag 'Father's Group' into this gen. And if the other lads ever want to take home the trophy, they'll be lining up to buy PS3s to get in some practice time.

Come on Guerrilla, help us out! And Sony sales will grow by a very solid 3 units 🙂

Halo is easy when your not in the legendary or upper levels. Its a game anyone can learn and play rather quickly. That and the great amount of features and publicity make it a no brainer to any new gamer or 360 owner.

Halo is quite popular, but there are some people who may or may not be incapable of learning how to play FPS's. I think it's the whole one-stick-to-aim-the-other-to-move thing that gets them hung up (my girlfriend included).

@Moose88

My friends do the same, but with Halo 3. The Halo series always produces a fantastic multiplayer game.

Im pretty sure Killzone 2 will give the players a new experience in gaming, but unfortunately it wont be a Halo killer in terms of sales. Like the Wii and Xbox arcade which sells really well, are gold through the eyes of casual gamers. Only the true gamers know the value of PS3, and sadly the ratio of hardcore to casual gamers are so low. Killzone 2 will never be hyped like Halo or Gears of war were. Casual gamers will buy those games without knowing crap about them, just cause they saw them on the ads.

WorldEndsWithMe

That's what I mean, HOW can Sony get any and all gamers to need this game like Microsoft does with their stuff? They can't do it with the same crappy commercials and magazine ads that apparently have been put out by a group of children riding the short bus.

Interesting point you made ben. Obviously the ps3 isnt winning againts the 360, and when it does, it wont be by a large amount.

Software will play a huge roll in deciding between the ps3 and 360. Sony can't rely on all their ps2 owners to upgrade to ps3 cuz, many many of my previous ps2 owning friends have moved onto 360.

I dunno. The thing MGS4 and GT3 have in common is that they came from successful franchises. From what I hear about Killzone, not many people are saying, "Man, the first Killzone was so awesome, I can't wait to play the new one!" Ya know? Sure, those who are in the know are eagerly anticipating it, but most of those people probably already own a PS3. What I'm saying is, KZ doesn't already have a dedicated franchise following like God of War, for instance. So, I don't think it will be the system seller that MGS4 was. Not saying that it won't be as good a game. Just saying that it doesn't have the pre-installed fan base. I think that's crucial in a system seller.

But, I could be wrong. A good media blitz might take the place of an already established fan base.

So Ben, are we gonna keep this 1-2 story a day about killzone 2 thing going on until after the launch?

BTW, this game has me more excited than Diablo 3, which is to say a LOT seeing as how Diablo 2 was one of my favorite games of all time (think, KZ2 has been in the making for 5 years. Diablo 3 has been for 10). Honestly, the Diablo series pre-dates the PS1.

Though games also constitute to selling a system,to me i think GRAPHICS also plays a major role.

Picture this,RE5 comes out n they say it looks waaaaay better on the ps3 than 360 or vice versa,of course nobody wants the inferior lookin' one.As to ppl droppin' another cash for a new system because of exclusives……..just a hand full.

Okay, the xbox had better graphics than ps2 but didn't sell well, cause xbox was new in the games industry n ppl didn't really pay attention. This generation is different,we all know about ps3 and 360 thus, one of them havin' the graphical edge can sell more.

Halo was brilliant, halo 2 was great, halo 3 was the most over rated fps title i ever played but it solds stellar amounts due to its huge fanbase which is what determines a system seller in most cases.
I think a game that captures the imagination of people can be the exception, kilzone 2 has the quality i believe, but i could be wrong as i thought LBP had that vibe too,LBP could be a slow burner though(such a fun game 2 play with people in the same room)
God of war has it,gran turismo5 will move systems in droves.
Now a console version of Crysis would move tons of units on both ps3 & xbox360,that game is the best fps game i've ever PLAYED,it wipes the floor with all the halo games, shit so did farcry on pc & imo so did half life 2/ the orange box(the combination of puzzle solving & great battles)
so Imho halo was killed long ago(i had more fun playing final doom & alien trilogy on ps1)

PS.i forgot about Alien vs predator on pc,that game would be nice on psn.
Here's hoping 4 a console version of Crysis!!! MAXIMUM ARMOR MAXIMUM SPEED.

If there is no price drop during K2's launch, which is looking very likely, that tells me that Sony is banking on K2 to be a system seller. Ofcourse it already has a few things going for it:
1. Exclusive(duh)
2. Fantastic reviews = the game delivers
3. Guns/violence sells in the western market
4. Internet hype(for hardcore gamers)

The main thing missing is will it get mainstream hype. Sony is supposedly going to market the game heavily. Will this game push systems like Halo, MetalGearSolid, Gears? We will just have to see.

Sony obviously needs to do something. Killzone's launch is less than a month away and I've not heard much about it outside of the gaming circles. Which isn't a good sign.

What really bothers me about this generation of consoles is that everyone is riding on Sony's coat tails. I don't mean to sound like a fanboy of any sort, but I can't be the only person in the world that's notices the striking similarity between Microsoft's commercials for all their games and the original PlayStation commercials that Sony aired. Sony really changed video gaming in general with the PS and their advertising campaign. Before Sony, no other video game or video game console had ads during prime time television, during pro-wrestling events, during MMA events (not that there WERE MMA events at the time, but still), during sporting events of any sort, so on and so forth. And now it's in abundance. Nintendo's original Wii commercials with the two Japanese guys wanting to play were quite different, but even Nintendo's gone to playing by Sony's rules. None of these adverts are all that original or even remotely striking, but both Nintendo and Microsoft are killing Sony at their own game.

Sony needs something brilliant and striking. The old you are not ready ads are the kinda thing Sony needs to be doing, creating their own niche in the market and letting people know the PS is still out there and is still something to contend with.

I mean, they can't just rely on Dave Chappelle skits to sell the thing, 'cause even he's not doing those skits anymore.

This is how I see it.

Just the fact that people call it a "Halo Killer" is going to spit in the face of the crowd they are trying to attract. Its like most people I know that I play with in Forza know about GT5 and thats really the problem of it because they are not trash talking the other. When Forza came out if was about the best driving on XBOX. And really it was only known by us Xbox guys..Even tho it was in many ways better then GT4(dont give me your shyt I own it I know what im talking about). And that brings me to my next point.

Its not that well known. Yeah sure you guys have known forever about it but yesterday as most know I rented a PS3 and brought over 6 of my friends to show it. We talked about it and we all agreed on most things. When we where talking I did bring up KZ2 and im not kidding every single one of them was like "whats that about". Then I said "well..its like Sonys Halo". BOOM. Convos where done. Noone wants to support the losing side in a war against a game many have looked for years. We all already know about Halo Wars and Halo ODST. Which we all think HaloWars will suck but are very very interested in ODST. We know its coming later this year and will ALL be in line to get it. Plus were all friends anyway and noone wants to be left out in our Halo sprees. Because not one of them me included are going to give up all the work and friends we already have to play KZ2 when we could just add kills to our collection on Live.

Thats really the genius of Live tho. Since you pay for it and are shown how much you have done to the whole community you dont want to play any other online service. Many people will be like "I payed $50 for this and going to get my worth out of it". Even tho its not alot of money you still feel that.

I know MGS would of sold FAR more if they spread the word because we all thought that was amazing. But when I first brought it up only 2 of them knew what it was already. Its not good. When you have the product you need to shove it right in the consumers FACE. Thats what MS does and thats what Sony need to do NOW if they want KZ2 to succeed.

Halo is old and outdated now and call of duty 4 which cam out around the same time is way better and i would say the king of fps games….my view cod4 was the halo killer halos time is over let rain the next load of fps games

That's true. I said before that I was at a New Year's Eve party and met two PS3 owners who had never heard of Killzone 2. Then, this week I got a friend request from a guy I'm on another board with. We hopped on the voice chat and were comparing which games we have. When I mentioned that I can't wait for KZ2 to come out, he said the same thing. "What's that?" If PS3 owners don't know about this game…something is really, REALLY broken! And they've got less than a month to fix it. And, honestly, I don't know if a month is long enough to advertise this game enough to make it a system seller.

Goes back to what I was saying before. If your game is part of an established franchise, you don't have to do as much marketing. People are already waiting for the next installment. But, Sony should have been hyping this since Christmas.

Also, that's a good point about live. Once you've paid for it, you've got a vested interest, and are more likely to stick to it, even if it's sub-par (not saying that Live is sub-par). Learned that in a psych class a couple years ago. Man, Microsoft is not only fu**ing wallets, they're fu**ing minds! 😀

Advertising is worth its weight in GOLD. It dont matter what it is. Make KZ cupcakes if you have to. Just get people aware of the title.

And stop using "Halo Killer". That just makes people believe it is THE benchmark for all FPS.

People can talk all day about how it plays. But if Joe Random at Bestbuy is looking at games hes gonna remember the title he seen during the football commercials. Because it caught his eye and wants to see what the fuss is about.

Many people dont remember I used to be diehard Sony. And you know what the first title I had on my mind was when I got a Xbox? It was to buy Halo and see what everyone was talking about.

Now I love the series and will get the next titles when they arrive. I will also tell my friends about it because its something I enjoy then they will look into it to.

The ball gets bigger.

Whose to say KZ2 WON'T be the benchmark title for the generation? You really think Halo can stay #1 forever? If so, you need to pull the green Master Cheif dildo outta your ass homie.

But don't judge to quickly, rent that PS3 again and play it when it comes out. I have no doubt in my mind that it will be better than the MGS4 you enjoyed.

I think that a system seller is a well advertised game. Halo 3 is the worst in the series, but we had tons of ads everywhere.

I think R2 is better then Halo 3, but the lack of advertisement lowered the sales.

Ads combined with a quality game = system seller.

So if you spend a million on advertising to make two million or you don't advertise and make a million, what's the difference?

PS3_Wizard
PS3_Wizard

Sony is advertising it heavily in hopes of pushing console sales. Most of the money they make from KZ2 will go to the developers. So the developers aren't losing advertising money. Spending $2 million in advertising KZ2 should see Sony making loads of money off hardware sales.

Troy Powers
Troy Powers

The difference is, if you spend the million advertising, you're not only advertising that specific title, you're advertising the SYSTEM which leads to sales of other titles.

You spend that extra million, you get the word out. That's more potential sales down the line off of that same million spent. Money well spent, my friend.
