As everyone already knows, the upcoming list of PlayStation 3 exclusives is most impressive. But it appears we need to add one more name to the assembly of promising PS3-only titles, and believe it or not, it's an RPG that isn't called White Knight Chronicles .
No, it's Demon's Souls , an action/RPG that first intrigued us late last year when early details began to surface. Now, the first review – from Famitsu – handed out a set of mixed scores: 9, 7, 7, and 6. This didn't help to bring the game into the limelight, but today, another Japanese review is flying across the Internet and role-playing fans are taking notice. Dengeki's analysis is far more positive, as Sony's exclusive title landed a 95 and three 85s. To us, this means two things: 1. it ought to be a huge seller in Japan, as White Knight Chronicles has done exceedingly well with similar Famitsu scores and lesser Dengeki scores, and 2. we may really have the spiritual successor to the likes of Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath . We've been waiting on a quality hack 'n slash D&D-type RPG since the mediocre Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom launched with the PS3 back in late 2006. And remember, the game in question should be far more engrossing and dynamic; it could be absolutely epic in terms of scale and immersion.
Demon's Souls launches next week in Japan, and after this latest analysis, we're going to keep a careful eye on this one. We still want WKC, of course, but Demon's Souls is a very different animal, and it would be a much appreciated addition to the PS3's library.
