Ben-DutkaGaming has come a long way, and for the very first time in the industry's history, we are finally experiencing something akin to virtual reality in the music/rhythm genre. We play plastic musical instruments in Guitar Hero and Rock Band , and while it's the current explosion that's sweeping the world, some professional musicians still think distinctions need to be made.
Take, for example, Oasis head man Noel Gallagher, who quite frankly says that "playing a guitar is not a f***ing videogame." In speaking to Total Guitar magazine, Gallagher first admitted to never playing Guitar Hero , but also added that any way to put music in the hands of kids "has to be a good thing." The part of these sentiments that's going to ruffle a few feathers in the industry is, of course, the "kid" part. Here's what Gallagher had to say:
"When I meet kids I always say to them playing a guitar is not a f*cking videogame, there is no level to get to. You'll never master it and you'll never complete the game."
And as for Activision's blockbuster music franchise, Gallagher said he's "never heard of it," even though there's an Oasis song in Rock Band . He also says that something like Guitar Hero has to be better than traditional video games, because it's only "harmless fun" and a more reasonable option than "somebody getting their f***ing head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting f***ed by a goblin up the arse with a laser." …er, we haven't played that one, but perhaps it's a new downloadable title that we haven't seen yet. Sometimes, it's just interesting to see how far out of the loop certain people are.
This clown's more than not in the loop. His head's in the friggin' sand. "When I meet kids…" Damn near killed myself laughing at that one.
Well as a musician myself, I can say it's good ol' fun to play them games, but no one and I mean no one can say that they can play the real deal when they are completely different things. I can understand the snobbery of his statement, but he should loosen up. Other than that, no one better say they can F**king play Guitar Hero and say they can master a real guitar :P. J/k.
well, the only thing i hate is when people say "some songs are harder on guitar hero than playing the original song".
It pisses me off so much. i bet most of the people who say it haven't even touched/tried playing a real guitar.

Most people I know that play real guitar, cant play guitar hero worth anything. They are just used to having to move their fingers up and down the neck instead of just hitting buttons. That's what makes it harder.
But if they get used to it, in like. a few days or even sooner. They'll get it. But when you just started to play a guitar in A couple of days, it still has that begginer sound to it. ot wont sound as perfect as you want it to be.
I can play a couple of the songs on GH using an actual guitar but i can barely make it through the song using the GH guitar. Reptilia by The Strokes took me about a dozen tried to get through on GH:3 with the hard setting, but i learned the song rather quickly on my real guitar.
Anyway…
Im glad kinds play games like GH and RB. It gets them interested in playing/writing music instead of just listening to it.
well thats the thing. In the real guitar, you can't fail. Unless your on-stage performing, and u suck a$$ and people start booing you. So you can't really compare the two. Thats why i agree with Gallagher, playing the guitar isn't a video game. there are no levels, and you can't beat it. In guitar hero, only the structure of the guitar controller is the same. But playing the real thing is waaaaayyyy different.
well i remember trying to play entersandman on rock band and i failed so bad but i can play it flawlessly on real guitar because i have become really good at guitar. playing real guitar is so different from hitting some plastic buttons!
A good amount of the songs on Rock Band and Guitar Hero are quite easy to play on the real instrument.
No joke, I can play the intro to "The Number of the Beast" and I've been playing for less than a month.

Yeah, that songs easy, but way easier on guitar hero/rock band. And its way different, you can't even compare guitar hero and real guitar playing. The only similarity between them is they are both music related. You dont make music with guitar hero 😛

Oh, and i agree with Gallagher. Playing guitar is not a video game :). Guitar hero/Rock Band is good because it makes kids interested in music. He should just rephrase what he said and cut a bit on the curses. It would make his statement sound a bit better.

Well alot of kids think that it is. thats why he's probably telling em that. You know those kids who think that just because they are good in guitar hero, think they are gonna be good in playing the real thing..

It's so obnoxious to get overly defensive about the sanctity of real instruments as if Guitar Hero and Rock Band threaten to overshadow musicianship.

Lol the GH ones aren't even 3/4 size.
Guitar and GH/Rock Band are actually not too far apart. Well, of course the real thing is more complex, but you still need agile fingers, and it's the same kind of idea. Once you get the feel of all the strings and can easily move to frets, the guitar can be easier than the game. Now, of course this does not include many hard rock/metal songs and solos.
The point is its so much more fun and rewarding to play real guitar and be good hitting some plastic buttons might be fun but it just doesnt compare its more for people who cant play guitar.

Playing guitar on RB is by FAR more difficult than playing a real one. Have you used that damn strum bar?

What a moron. To my knowledge no one said that playing guitar was a game. We just like to experience the feel of being a rockstar. Games like Guitar Hero are not about cheapening guitar playing, but rather about hero worship and allowing people to be closer to their heroes.
Neol Gallagher should get a copy of GHWT and play a song on it by his favorite artists. He'll soon realize that it's just like playing along to your favorite tracks with a guitar, but without having to spend years getting good enough to feel it. It makes the experience far more accessible and it My Gallagher cares for anyone but himself, he'll see that it a good thing.
Maybe he was brutally beaten on Guitar Hero? or maybe he's trying to gain attention

He should be happy that thanks to games like Rockband and Guitar hero, people are willing to pay money again to listen/play to his songs instead of just downloading them for free..

Someone really needs to get Noel signed up to video game design! We might get some originality if his off the cuff remarks are anything to go by!

WHEW!! I'm glad my eyes have been opened. I was about to go out, buy a real guitar and go right on tour because I kick ass on GH. Now I definitely won't because it's not a GAME! Guess I can get rid of all that alcohol and heroin.
