When we first heard about the idea, we were a little skeptical. We freely admit that. Crossover games don't always fare well, and as this one was scheduled to launch alongside some of the biggest blockbusters of 2008, we didn't hold out much hope for success.
But we're men. We can admit when we've been proven wrong. Today, Midway has proudly announced that they've shipped a grand total of about 1.8 million copies of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe worldwide. Said Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-founder and creative director:
"Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort. We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."
We don't have any sales numbers just yet, but the number shipped is impressive, and Midway also reports that – believe it or not – this was "the most pre-ordered MK title in company history." Furthermore, it seems that over 3.6 million matches have already been played online…and that's just counting the PS3. Well, it appears they really did nab both sets of loyal fans with this one, and if you haven't yet given it a try, the game is available everywhere, and a few copies of the special Kollector's Edition are still floating around, too. For more info, head on over to the game's official site, WorldsCollide.com . And hey, let's hear more about that new MK, too!
